IMPORTANCE: No consensus exists as to the best technique, or techniques, to optimize wound healing, decrease pharyngocutaneous fistula formation, and shorten both hospital length of stay and time to initiation of oral intake after salvage laryngectomy. We sought to combine the recent experience of multiple high-volume institutions, with different reconstructive preferences, in the management of pharyngeal closure technique for post-radiation therapy salvage total laryngectomy in an effort to bring clarity to this clinical challenge.
OBJECTIVE: To determine if the use of vascularized flaps in

Parotid gland plays the most critical role in saliva secretion in the oral cavity. Parotid gland injuries due to facial trauma can cause various complications such as formation of a fistula or sialocele. Thus, such saliva-related complications can interfere with wound healing and increase the risk of infection. Several previous studies have discussed the treatment of fistula or sialocele. Nonetheless, prevention of such complications is of utmost importance. We present a case of parotid gland injury due to trauma to the cheeks that was surgically treated, with early postoperative management in

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of the supraclavicular artery island flap (SAIF) in reconstructing pharyngocutaneous fistula in patients with laryngopharyngeal cancer with prior radiotherapy.
METHODS: Six patients with laryngopharyngeal cancer with pharyngocutaneous fistula due to previous radiotherapy and surgery during 2016 to 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Initially, the fistula was treated conservatively. The SAIF was applied with double folding technique to reconstruct fistula in the patients who failed to heal after conservative treatment.
RESULTS: The fistulae closed in 4 patie

BACKGROUND: Enterovesical fistula is a rare cause of recurrent urinary tract infections. This condition is unusual in young people as common etiologies include diverticular disease and cancer. When an enterovesical fistula occurs in women of childbearing age, Crohn's disease is a likely cause. To our knowledge, enterovesical fistula complicating pregnancy has not been reported before.
CASE: A pregnant woman with recurrent urinary tract infections was evaluated. Cystoscopy was suggestive of an enterovesical fistula, which was confirmed by charcoaluria following oral charcoal administration. Th

A postoperative aerodigestive fistula is one of the rare but critical complications after esophagectomy, and management is challenging. The essential keys to successful treatment of these fistula are thorough debridement and complete closure followed by separation of the respiratory and digestive tract. We present a case of a recurrent bronchoesophageal fistula between the left main bronchus and neo esophagus, which was successfully treated through a contralateral approach. The fistula was debrided and closed primarily through a right thoracotomy, and the interposition of a pedicled latissimus

INTRODUCTION: The pectoralis major flap is a reconstructive option to consider in the treatment of pharyngocutaneous fistula after a total laryngectomy. There are not large studies assessing variables related to pharyngocutaneous fistula recurrence after removal of the larynx. Our objectives were to review the results obtained with this type of treatment when pharyngocutaneous fistula appears in laryngectomized patients, and to evaluate variables related to the results.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed our results using either a myocutaneous or fasciomuscular pectoralis major flap to repa

Oronasal fistula (ONF) is a common complication encountered after palatoplasty. Repair is indicated when symptoms impact speech and swallowing. In spite of the variety of surgical approaches described to repair these defects, recurrence rates remain high. Traditionally, successful closure is said to be achieved in using a double-layered approach due to the three-dimensional aspect of the defect. The extent of the fistula into the nasal cavity has incited an increased curiosity in using local endonasal flaps. In recent years, endonasal reconstructive procedures have seen increased interest and

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this article is to present the current opinion on the prevention and management of oronasal fistulas in cleft palate patients.
RECENT FINDINGS: Though cleft palate repair has seen numerous modifications and improvements, oronasal fistulas remain one of the most common complications of palatoplasty. There are various techniques available for preventing and managing this complication.
SUMMARY: Oronasal fistulas can be minimized by employing proper principles for palatoplasty. Once a fistula occurs, the repair technique should be appropriate for the fistula type. O

Cutaneous sinus tracts of dental origin are often a diagnostic challenge. A delay in correct diagnosis can result in inappropriate treatments. We describe two unusual cases of periapical infection. The first patient presented with a fistulized tumoral mass under the chin present for 1 year. The patient had only one tooth, and that was anatomically unrelated to the tumor. Radiological examination showed a dormant tooth that was infected periapically. The second case was a man who complained of asymmetry and change in his left nasolabial fold of 4-5 week's duration. On examination, the nasolabia

A 67-year-old woman diagnosed with pyonephrosis and perinephric abscess because of an impacted urinary stone in the pelvicoureteric junction was admitted to the hospital with a high-grade fever. Although construction of a right nephrostomy for drainage of the abscess improved her general condition, she had a fever again 2 weeks after the initial treatment. Computed tomography revealed a persistent perinephric retroperitoneal abscess and a second drainage procedure was performed. Then, imaging examination revealed fistula formation between the cavity of the perinephric retroperitoneal abscess a

The oronasal fistula is a chronic communication between the oral and nasal cavity that often affects patients with cleft palate. However, others uncommon causes of oronasal fistula are associated with facial traumas, infections and neoplasias. In this report we present a case of oronasal fistula as consequence of facial trauma that was treated by two flaps technique for palatoplasty. In this sense, we discussed treatment indications, surgical technique and patient prognostic of a relatively simple option that can provide a definitive repair with minimal morbidity.

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association1991eng
The occurrence of a synovial fistula after knee arthroscopy is uncommon. In a retrospective review of 976 arthroscopies of the knee over 3 years, six patients developed synovial fistulae (incidence 6.1/1,000). All patients were treated with short-term immobilization and oral prophylactic antibiotics. All fistulae closed after an average of 9 days of immobilization, and none required further treatment. Risk factors that may predispose a patient to fistula formation are posterior compartment portals and the presence of significant degenerative joint disease. A treatment protocol is presented.
