Subjective Oral Health-Related Quality of Life and Objective Oral Health in People with Ectodermal Dysplasia.

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) refers to a heterogeneous group of genetic diseases of the skin, skin appendages, and teeth. People with ED experience a poorer oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) compared to the general population. The aim of this study was to examine the OHRQoL of people with ED and to measure their objective physical oral health to confirm or disprove evidence of poorer oral health in this population. To determine OHRQoL, the German version of the 14-item Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14G) was used. All the participants in the study were clinically examined, and the me

Oral health status of older adults in Kentucky: results from the Kentucky Elder Oral Health Survey.

The purpose of the Kentucky Elder Oral Health Survey (KEOHS) was to assess the oral health status of Kentuckians 65 and older. The KEOHS consisted of a self-administered questionnaire and a clinical examination. Recruitment occurred from May 2002 through March 2005 of persons aged 65 and older (n = 1,386) whose functional ability was classified by residential setting. Independent elders living in their own homes were designated as "well-elders," those who lived in skilled nursing facilities and who were functionally dependent were designated as "nursing home elders," and those older adults who

Screening oral health in older adults: accuracy of the Oral Health Screener for use within the interRAI.

Regular assessment is essential to maintain oral health in nursing home residents, but access to professional dental care is often limited. The Oral Health Screener within the interRAI instruments (OHS) allows caregivers without dental background to identify potential oral problems. This study evaluated the accuracy of the OHS items Oral hygiene, Teeth, and Gums against established dental indices. Dental professionals assessed 458 residents (mean age 82.7 ± 7.8 years, 70.3% female; 53.9% dentate) using the OHS, Oral Hygiene Index, Modified Gingival Index, and Pulp Ulceration Fistula Abscess in

Assessment of Oral Health Literacy of Parents Regarding Their Children's Oral Health: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND The American Dental Association defines oral health literacy as the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand information and services that allow them to make appropriate decisions about oral health. Parental oral health literacy influences children's dental health, as parents' knowledge and practices play a key role in prevention. The present study aimed to evaluate oral health literacy among 692 parents of children aged 2 to 12 years using the Health Literacy Dental Scale-14 (HeLD-14) and child oral health using the Decayed, Missing, and Fill

Oral health in asthmatic patients: a review : Asthma and its therapy may impact on oral health.

Different drugs used to treat asthma, such as beta 2 agonists and inhaled steroids, may promote a higher risk of caries, dental erosion, periodontal disease and oral candidiasis. This article reviews the evidences of mechanisms involved in oral diseases in patients affected by asthma. The main mechanism involved is the reduction of salivary flow. Other mechanisms include: acid pH in oral cavity induced by inhaled drugs (particularly dry powder inhaled), lifestyle (bad oral hygiene and higher consumption of sweet and acidic drinks), gastroesophageal reflux, and the impairment of local immunity.

Oral Health in the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study.

Tobacco use is a well-established risk factor for multiple adverse oral conditions. Few nationally representative oral health data sets encompass the current diversity of tobacco and nicotine products. This investigation examines the validity of oral health measures in the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study to assess relationships between tobacco use and oral health. Cross-sectional data from PATH Study wave 4 (N = 33,643 US adults, collected 2016-2018) were used to obtain estimates for 6 self-reported oral conditions (e.g., bone loss around teeth, tooth extractions) and

Exploring the Influence of Oral Health on Pregnancy Outcomes: A Narrative Review: Oral Health and Pregnancy Outcomes.

Oral health significantly impacts overall health, with increasing evidence linking poor oral health to adverse pregnancy outcomes. Periodontal disease, a chronic gum condition, is associated with preterm birth, low birth weight, and preeclampsia. Systemic inflammation and bacterial translocation are proposed mechanisms connecting periodontal disease to pregnancy complications. Maternal immune responses may be impaired, increasing systemic inflammation, and triggering preterm labor. In addition, oral bacteria may reach the uterus, causing localized inflammation and poor outcomes. Intervention t

Chapter 6: Vitamins and Oral Health.

Vitamins are essential organic compounds that catalyze metabolic reactions. They also function as electron donors, antioxidants or transcription effectors. They can be extracted from food and supplements, or in some cases, synthesized by our body or gut microbiome. Severe vitamin deficiencies result in systemic complications, including the development of scurvy, rickets, pellagra, and beriberi. Some moderate and severe deficiencies also result in oral conditions. A lower intake of vitamin A has been associated with decreased oral epithelial development, impaired tooth formation, enamel hypopla
