Oral hygiene reinforcement in the simplified periodontal treatment of 1 hour.

AIM: To compare the clinical and microbiological outcome of the 1-h ultrasonic debridement of chronic periodontitis patients (CPP) with and without frequent sessions of oral hygiene reinforcement. METHODS: Clinical measurements and subgingival plaque were collected from 44 CPP at baseline, 3- and 6-months. The control group received a single session of 1-h full-mouth ultrasonic debridement, while oral hygiene instructions (OHI) were reiterated over four visits. In the test group, OHI were limited in the 1-h treatment session. At 3-months, both groups received additional debridement and OHI. T

[Does good oral hygiene guarantee the maintenance of a health periodontium?].

On the last European Workshop for Periodontology, it was accepted that the prevalence of periodontitis in certain regions of Europe and USA has decreased. It remains difficult to phrase a decision concerning the prevalence of periodontitis in general. This article wants to highlight the need of a good oral hygiene and different forms of prevention (primary, secondary & tertiary) in the maintenance of a healthy periodontium. The relationship between gingivitis and tooth loss is pointed out. The prevention is described in the complexity of the periodontitis proces and it's modifying factors. Whe

[Oral hygiene, prophylaxis and therapy in patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases].

Inflammatory disorders of the periodontium are often associated with chronic systemic diseases, which can demonstrate a reciprocal influence. Within the adult population at present, 74% of younger adults and 88% of older individuals require periodontal treatment. Due to inflammatory processes, patients with rheumatoid arthritis or other chronic polyarthritides frequently suffer from pain in the temporomandibular joint and, since finger mobility is often limited, their ability to perform oral hygiene measures is impeded. However, diligent and constant oral hygiene is of crucial importance both

The relation between foetor ex ore, oral hygiene and periodontal disease.

Bad breath usually originates in the mouth. It is described with different names as oral malodor, halitosis or foetor ex ore. Dental plaque, bacterial products from deep periodontal pockets and bacterial products from the tongue probably cause bad breath but also bacterial products from tonsils and pharynx probably are involved. In this study we clinically examined subjects with very strong bad breath, foetor ex ore. Foetor ex ore was defined as strong evil-smelling odor from the mouth of the patient which had an affect on the examiner and made the oral examination excruciating. Subjects with

An oral hygiene measurement system for possible research and clinical use.

A new hygiene index has been developed that it is felt better meets the requirements for individual patient analysis than other indices. Examiner subjectivity is reduced by scoring tooth surfaces as clean (0) or dirty (1), determining a percentage of "dirty" surfaces which then becomes the Hygiene Analysis Index. Tested on a group of dental students it appears to discriminate adequately between the various levels of mouth hygiene.

Traditional Oral Hygiene Practices and Their Effectiveness: A Systematic Review of the Evidence.

PURPOSE: Given the increasing interest in natural and sustainable oral hygiene options, this systematic review evaluates the efficacy of traditional oral hygiene practices, specifically miswak and oil pulling, in maintaining oral health compared with conventional practices, addressing the question: how do these practices affect plaque and gingival outcomes relative to toothbrushing and standard rinses? We hypothesized non-inferiority for short-term plaque/gingivitis control, with limited evidence for longer-term outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review was conducted following PRIS

[Significance of proper oral hygiene for health condition of mouth and teeth].

BACKGROUND/AIM: Proper mouth and teeth hygiene has influence on the prevention of a great number of diseases and very often some of them are not related only to oral cavity. Most frequent diseases of mouth and teeth such as caries and periodontal diseases are caused, among other factors, by poor oral hygiene. They are also more frequent in young population. The aim of this study was to estimate the influence of sociodemographic characteristics and hygienic habit on oral health in children aged 11-15 years. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted by the dental teams in dentist surger

[Dental health and the state of oral hygiene in an elderly population in Rome].

The purpose of this study was to investigate dental conditions and oral hygiene in a population of 369 elderly people residing in Rome--293 females and 76 males--aged between 60 and 99 years (mean 81.9 +/- 8.1). The sample was interviewed following a dental examination. Clinical tests revealed that 40% were totally edentulous, whereas subjects with natural teeth had a mean of 11.4, teeth, of which 1.5 were decayed. Oral hygiene habits were investigated by means of questions on use of dental tools (toothbrush, mouth-wash, dental floss), which were not much used. Moreover, many elderly people re

The dentist's attitudes and their interaction with patient involvement in oral hygiene compliance.

The influence on patient compliance of the dentist's attitudes to his or her job and to his or her patient was studied in a sample of 82 patients. The dentist's attitudes were assessed at the beginning of dental treatment. Treatment consisted of cleaning, depuration and motivation. At follow-up examination after six months, attendance at follow-up and the development of plaque, calculus and gingivitis were significantly predicted by the dentist's attitudes. A causal model, which also included factors of patient involvement, was developed. The compliance-producing factors were, primarily, the e

Hygiene and health: the value of antiplaque agents in promoting oral health.

The improvements in human health and increased life expectancy which have come about in many societies in the past century have been due, predominantly, to improvements in hygiene--both personal and environmental. As the common oral diseases--caries and gingivitis and to some extent periodontitis--are bacterially mediated diseases, they are also amendable to control by oral hygiene. As commonly practised however, with modern diets, mechanical oral hygiene alone has limited effect on disease incidence. The supplementation of tooth brushing with chemical agents which modulate plaque metabolism a

Relationship of oral hygiene and sugar consumption to risk of caries in children.

The associations of dental caries with poor oral hygiene and high sugar consumption were analyzed taking into account possible confounding and factor interaction. The series consisted of 543 children from low-fluoride areas (0.10-0.46 parts/10(6)), aged 5, 9 and 13 years. Plaque accumulation and sugar consumption were slightly confounded throughout the observations. Effect-modification appeared to exist, since the effect of one factor was greater at higher levels of the other. The association between the amount of plaque and dental caries was statistically significant at all levels of sugar co

Association of tooth loss and oral hygiene with risk of gastric adenocarcinoma.

Poor oral health and tooth loss have been proposed as possible risk factors for some chronic diseases, including gastric cancer. However, a small number of studies have tested these associations. We conducted a case-control study in Golestan Province, Iran, that enrolled 309 cases diagnosed with gastric adenocarcinoma (118 noncardia, 161 cardia, and 30 mixed-locations) and 613 sex, age, and neighborhood matched controls. Data on oral health were obtained through physical examination and questionnaire including tooth loss, the number of decayed, missing, and filled teeth, and frequency of tooth
