This article provides an overview of rare orbital diseases. Congenital malformations, inflammatory diseases, benign and malignant neoplasias are described. Although it represents a relatively small area of the body the orbit contains multiple different tissues. Therefore, a great variety of diseases can be found within the orbital space. That is the reason, why both the completeness and the level of detail in the description of particular diseases must be somewhat limited. Nevertheless, clinical manifestations, important aspects of diagnosis, treatment strategies, and, when specific data are a

Cellular angiofibroma is a benign mesenchymal tumor most commonly located in the distal genital tract of both men and women. Although extragenital locations have been reported rarely, this is the first report of cellular angiofibroma of the orbit. A 58-year-old man presented with a mass in the left superomedial orbit since 2 years. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a well-demarcated lesion with a homogeneous intermediate signal intensity on both T1- and T2-weighted images, homogeneous contrast enhancement and high signal intensity on diffusion-weighted images. Complete excision was performed t

A triton tumor is a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) with rhabdomyomatous differentiation These tumors account for 5% of MPNSTs and have an extremely poor prognosis. We describe the case of a 14-year-old girl who presented with a history of painful, progressive protrusion of her right eye with a diminution of vision for the past five years. She had been diagnosed as having an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the right orbit, and she had undergone surgical debulking followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Despite undergoing multiple modalities of treatment, she had several recurr

Intraosseous hemangioma is an extremely rare tumor that accounts for 1% or fewer of all osseous tumors. The most common sites of its occurrence are the vertebral column and calvaria. Occurrence in a facial bone is very rare. The authors aim to report a case of the surgical treatment of intraosseous hemangioma occurring in the periorbital region, which is a very rare site of occurrence and to introduce our own experiences with the diagnosis and treatment of this condition along with a literature review. A 73-year-old male patient visited our hospital with the chief complaint of a mass touching

Fungal infections of the orbit can lead to grave complications. Although the primary site of inoculation of the infective organism is frequently the sinuses, the patients can initially present to the ophthalmologist with ocular signs and symptoms. Due to its varied and nonspecific clinical features, especially in the early stages, patients are frequently misdiagnosed and even treated with steroids which worsen the situation leading to dire consequences. Ophthalmologists should be familiar with the clinical spectrum of disease and the variable presentation of this infection, as early diagnosis

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to present image findings, clinical and histopathologic features, and surgical management of orbital cholesterol granuloma (CG), a rare orbital entity.
METHODS: Findings from 2 patients with orbitofrontal CG are presented along with a review of the literature on CG of the orbit.
RESULTS: Both patients were 40-year-old men. The common symptoms of this condition in the present cases were proptosis and inferomedial displacement of the globe. Computed tomography scan in patient 1 revealed the presence of a cystic lesion without bone erosion in the superolateral

The term orbital tumor covers a wide range of benign and malignant diseases affecting specific component of the orbit or developing in contact with them. They are found incidentally or may be investigated as part of the assessment of a systemic disorder or because of orbital signs (exophthalmos, pain, etc.). Computed tomography, MRI and Color Doppler Ultrasound (CDU), play a varying role depending on the clinical presentation and the disease being investigated. This article reflects long experience in a reference center but does not claim to be exhaustive. We have chosen to consider these tumo

We report a case of unsuspected penetrating trauma with intraorbital foreign body, namely a needlefish jaw. A 44-year-old fisherman presented with vertical diplopia and discrete swelling of the upper lid near the medial canthus after being hit by a fish. He was unaware of any penetrating lesion or foreign body. There was no entry wound. CT-scan showed a foreign body between the globe and the medial orbital wall. Surgical exploration found that it was a 4.5cm long needlefish jaw. Removal resulted in complete resolution of symptoms. Needlefish can be very dangerous. This is the first reported ca

During the last decade, the use of endoscopic endonasal approaches to the pituitary has increased considerably. The endoscopic endonasal and transantral approaches offer a minimally invasive alternative to the classic transcranial or transconjunctival approaches to the medial aspect of the orbit. The medial wall of the orbit, the orbital apex, and the optic canal can be exposed through a middle meatal antrostomy, an anterior and posterior ethmoidectomy, and a sphenoidotomy. The inferomedial wall of the orbit can be also perfectly visualized through a sublabial antrostomy or an inferior meatal

Complex and sometimes severe lesions of the orbit can be caused by a variety of injury mechanisms, such as fractures, hemorrhages and foreign bodies. Imaging techniques play an extremely important role in the treatment of various diagnostic question marks, such as direct sequelae of trauma, localization of fractures and soft tissue damage.

Inflammatory conditions belong to the most important diseases of the orbit. Children and adolescents are mostly affected and the most common cause is secondary pathogen invasion from acute sinusitis. However in adults most cases involve idiopathic orbital inflammation, previously termed pseudotumor orbitae. Clinical presentation may include painful exophthalmus, skin redness and warming, chemosis and disturbed eye motility. The challenge for imaging investigations, mainly a combination of CT scanning and MRI, is to distinguish inflammatory from malignant conditions, to define the extent of les

A 61-year-old woman developed metastatic angiosarcoma in her left orbit. Diagnosis was confirmed with an incisional orbital biopsy and special markers. Treatment and palliation involved the use of multiple cycles of paclitaxcel, doxorubicin, and ifosfamide along with adjuvant radiotherapy. The measured outcome was tumor mass reduction and mortality. Angiosarcoma was confirmed with histologic analysis. The patient responded to the chemotherapy with reduction of the tumor mass. However, the disease progressed off the medications. She finally died. However, she survived longer than the patient in

A 10-month-old girl presented with an extensive orbital and cranial metastatic lesion from an adrenal ganglioneuroblastoma. Treatment with chemotherapy alone resulted in complete regression of the tumors with over 7 years of follow-up. Good prognostic indicators included her young age at diagnosis, DNA index of tumor cells of 1.4, and the histologic subtype of neuroblastic tumor. This is the first reported case of ganglioneuroblastoma metastatic to the orbit.

PURPOSE: We report on two cases of dirofilaria involving the orbit. There have been no previous case reports of superior rectus involvement in the literature.
METHODS: The presenting history, ocular examination, relevant investigations and treatments are discussed.
RESULTS: In both cases the lesion was debulked surgically with subsequent histopathological identification of a dirofilarial worm. Postoperatively both patients were relieved of their presenting symptoms with no recurrence of the lesion.
CONCLUSIONS: Dirofilarial involvement of the orbit is uncommon. It should be considered as a

A 55-year-old woman who underwent orbital fat excision for cosmesis was incidentally found to have an isolated orbital cysticercus identified by histopathologic examination. The ensuing workup was negative for disseminated cysticercal infection and further treatment was deferred. Although uncommon, orbital cysticercosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of an asymptomatic orbital mass. Symptomatic orbital myocysticercosis has been effectively treated with albendazole at a dosage of 30 mg/kg for 15 days combined with simultaneous low-dose steroids.
