MRI-assisted dual motion correction for myocardial perfusion defect detection in PET imaging.

PURPOSE: Myocardial perfusion (MP) PET imaging is a powerful tool in risk assessment and stratification of patients with coronary artery disease. Involuntary organ motion degrades cardiac PET image resolution, while respiratory and/or cardiac gating to freeze the motion leads to noisier reconstructed images due to reduced counts in the gated frames. In this work, we propose an MRI-assisted dual motion correction method to compensate for respiratory and cardiac motion in MP PET data and study the impact of dual motion correction on MP defect detection using systematically designed experiments.

Assessment of otolith function using cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in individuals with motion sickness.

The involvement of otolith organs in motion sickness has long been debated; however, equivocal findings exist in literature. The present study thus aimed at evaluating the otolith functioning in individuals with motion sickness. Cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials were recorded from 30 individuals with motion sickness, 30 professional drivers and 30 healthy individuals. The results revealed no significant difference in latencies and amplitudes between the groups (p>0.05). Nonetheless, thresholds were significantly elevated and inter-aural asymmetry ratio significantly hig

[STUDY OF PROBLEM ASPECTS OF MANIFESTATION OF KINETOSIS IN CREW MEMBERS OF WATER VESSELS].

Motion sickness syndrome, or kinetosis, is a pathological reaction of the body to unusual movement. The most wellknown type of this condition is seasickness. During pitching and when changing body position, a person experiences irritation of the vestibular organ, visual analyzer and receptors of internal organs, which affects the proper performance of their production functions. Given the specifics of the work of seafarers, many shipowners are concerned about this problematic aspect. In this article, the author reveals the etymology of the concepts of «kinetosis», «motion sickness syndrome» an

Mechanical tuning of free-standing stereociliary bundles and frequency analysis in the alligator lizard cochlea.

Excised cochleae of alligator lizards were prepared to permit microscopic observations of motion of hair-cell free-standing stereociliary bundles and of the underlying basilar papilla during acoustic stimulation, using stroboscopic illumination. In response to tones of frequency from 0.2 to 5 kHz, the papilla rocks about an axis parallel to its length, displacing stereociliary bundles in the morphologically predicted direction of hair cell sensitivity. The papilla moves in phase along its entire length; for frequencies above about 3 kHz, the amplitude of motion of the most basal region is seve

Sound-induced tympanal membrane motion in bushcrickets and its relationship to sensory output.

In the auditory system of bushcrickets, sound can reach the receptors via two different paths: (i) by acting on the outside of the tympana situated on both sides of each foreleg or (ii) through the acoustic trachea that opens at a spiracle on the thorax. While the spiracle is considered to be the main point of sound entry for higher audio and ultrasonic frequencies, the role of the tympana is still unclear. The tympana border the air-filled acoustic trachea as well as the fluid-filled haemolymph channel containing the receptor organs. To understand their role during sound transduction, the sou

Adaptive fusion of accelerometer and ultrasound signals for real-time motion tracking in therapeutic ultrasound stimulation.

Objective. Ultrasound (US) stimulation of the spleen has shown promise in activating anti-inflammatory neural reflexes for treating conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and sepsis. However, clinical translation remains challenging due to respiratory-induced motion, which risks off-target stimulation and often requires manual adjustment. While US imaging offers key advantages, tracking reliability is reduced by acoustic window loss and occlusion. This study introduces a robust tracking framework that enhances US-based motion monitoring via adaptive sensor fusion.Approach. A wearable accelero

Quantifying Interfractional Motion in Patients With Anorectal Cancer During Radiotherapy and Recommendations of Optimal Planning Target Volume Margins.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to assess pelvic organ motion and volume changes during long-course radiation therapy (LCRT) for anorectal cancer and propose an optimal planning target volume (PTV) margin. METHOD: This retrospective study analysed 526 daily cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) from 22 patients with anorectal cancer undergoing LCRT. Patients followed a bladder-filling protocol by drinking water before treatment. The bladder, rectum and mesorectum were delineated on planning CT and CBCTs. PTV margins were calculated using the van Herk formula, and margins to cover 95% interfract

[Research progress on the etiology and treatment of patellofemoral pain syndrome].

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is one of the most common diseases that cause pain in the knee joint. At present, there is no specific diagnostic measure. The diagnosis of patellofemoral pain syndrome may be considered when imaging is performed without cartilage, ligament and soft tissue injuries. The etiology includes abnormalities of the patellar motion caused by various anatomical abnormalities, such as abnormal patellar position, increased Q angle, and excessive valgus foot. Dysfunction of the lower extremity muscles such as the imbalance of the four biceps and the dysfunction of the g

Modelling motion sickness and subjective vertical mismatch detailed for vertical motions.

In an attempt to predict the amount of motion sickness given any kind of motion stimulus, we describe a model using explicit knowledge of the vestibular system. First, the generally accepted conflict theory is restated in terms of a conflict between a vertical as perceived by the sense organs like the vestibular system and the subjective vertical as determined on the basis of previous experience. Second, this concept is integrated with optimal estimation theory by the use of an internal model. If detailed for vertical motions only, the model does predict typical observed motion sickness charac

Measurement and Incorporation of Laryngeal Motion Using cine-MRI on an MR-Linear Accelerator to Generate Radiation Therapy Plans for Early-stage Squamous Cell Cancers of the Glottis.

PURPOSE: Swallow-related motion of the larynx is most significant in the cranio-caudal directions and of` short duration. Conventional target definition for radical radiation therapy includes coverage of the whole larynx. This study longitudinally examined respiration- and swallow-related laryngeal motions using cine-magnetic resonance imaging. We further analyzed the dosimetry to organs at risk by comparing 3D-conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) techniques. METHODS: Fifteen patients with T1-2 N0 glott

Psychophysical evidence for an internal model of gravity in the visual and vestibular estimates of vertical motion duration.

The motion of objects and ourselves along the vertical is affected by gravitational acceleration. However, the visual system is poorly sensitive to accelerations, and the otolith organs do not disassociate gravitational and inertial accelerations. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the brain estimates the duration of vertical visual motion and self-motion by means of an internal model of gravity predicting that downward motions are accelerated and upward motions are decelerated by gravity. In visual sessions, a target moved up or down while participants remained stationary. In vestibular sess

Motion sickness: an evolutionary and genetic basis for the negative reinforcement model.

It has been theorized that motion sickness evolved as a negative reinforcement system which terminates motion involving postural instability and/or sensory conflict. A hypothetical example is provided by a "thought experiment" whereby protohominids are in a tree looking for food. Selection pressure results when the organisms that have an aversion to motion-producing sensory conflict do not venture out too far on the tree limbs and therefore tend to survive. In order to support an evolutionary model for motion sickness there must be evidence for genetic and/or heritable predisposition. The pres

Non-invasive assessment of early cardiac involvement in systemic sclerosis.

Twenty-eight patients with wide spectrum organ involvement of progressive systemic sclerosis but without signs or symptoms suggestive of cardiac involvement were studied by non-invasive cardiac techniques. The 12-lead electrocardiogram showed abnormalities in 6 patients: one had abnormal T waves and 5 had complete or incomplete right bundle branch block. Twenty-four hour ambulatory electrocardiography demonstrated higher average heart rates than in similar aged controls (82 +/- 9 vs 74 +/- 9 beats/min, P less than 0.05). In one patient a short run of ventricular tachycardia was recorded. No ot

Motion sickness: a synthesis and evaluation of the sensory conflict theory.

"Motion sickness" is the general term describing a group of common nausea syndromes originally attributed to motion-induced cerebral ischemia, stimulation of abdominal organ afferents, or overstimulation of the vestibular organs of the inner ear. Seasickness, car sickness, and airsickness are commonly experienced examples. However, the identification of other variants such as spectacle sickness and flight simulator sickness in which the physical motion of the head and body is normal or even absent has led to a succession of "sensory conflict" theories that offer a more comprehensive etiologic

Multisensory self-motion compensation during object trajectory judgments.

Judging object trajectory during self-motion is a fundamental ability for mobile organisms interacting with their environment. This fundamental ability requires the nervous system to compensate for the visual consequences of self-motion in order to make accurate judgments, but the mechanisms of this compensation are poorly understood. We comprehensively examined both the accuracy and precision of observers' ability to judge object trajectory in the world when self-motion was defined by vestibular, visual, or combined visual-vestibular cues. Without decision feedback, subjects demonstrated no c

Motion Mitigation Techniques for Abdominal and Cardiac MR Imaging.

MRI of the heart and abdominal organs provides unparalleled soft tissue contrast and quantitative biomarkers, yet remains highly susceptible to physiological motion. Contractions of the myocardium, respiratory excursions, peristalsis, vascular pulsatility, and unpredictable bulk patient movement generate artifacts that impair image quality, limit reproducibility, and may necessitate repeat scans. This review summarizes motion correction strategies in cardiac and abdominal MRI, emphasizing both clinical applications and methodological principles. Techniques to address motion can be broadly cate
