The need for exercise sciences and an integrated response to COVID-19: A position statement from the international HL-PIVOT network.

COVID-19 is one of the biggest health crises that the world has seen. Whilst measures to abate transmission and infection are ongoing, there continues to be growing numbers of patients requiring chronic support, which is already putting a strain on health care systems around the world and which may do so for years to come. A legacy of COVID-19 will be a long-term requirement to support patients with dedicated rehabilitation and support services. With many clinical settings characterized by a lack of funding and resources, the need to provide these additional services could overwhelm clinical c

Workplace Outcomes and Experiences of Internationally Educated Nurses: A Scoping Review.

Nursing shortages in the United States (U.S.) have increased reliance on internationally educated nurses (IENs), yet their workplace outcomes remain poorly understood. This scoping review synthesized peer-reviewed empirical studies examining IEN workplace outcomes and associated individual characteristics and work conditions. Findings from 34 studies published between 2004 and 2025 showed that IENs generally reported moderate to high job satisfaction, while burnout findings suggested moderate to high occupational strain. Evidence on intention to leave was limited by inconsistent measurement an

Delineating a Spectrum of Physician Participation in Medical Aid in Dying: A Qualitative Exploration.

BACKGROUND: Physician participation in medical aid in dying (MAID) is commonly framed as a binary choice between participation and objection. Emerging evidence suggests physician involvement is nuanced, with levels of engagement shaped by ethical beliefs, professional responsibilities, and organizational structure. Improved understanding of how physicians make these decisions is needed to inform policy, clinical practice, and discussions about conscience-based practices. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study of 20 physicians practicing in US states where MAID is legal. We used

Supporting New Physicians and New Parents: A Call to Create a Standard Parental Leave Policy for Residents.

Parents taking leave after the birth of a child is associated with significant benefits for infants, mothers, and fathers. Although nearly 40% of residents have or plan to have children during residency, there is no standard parental leave policy for these trainees. In this Perspective, the authors discuss the benefits of parental leave, synthesize findings about maternity bias and other negative effects of the current variable approaches to parental leave during residency, and explore underlying causes of the lack of a standard parental leave policy for residents. They also call on the Accred

Editorial policy of Magnesium Research: general considerations on the quality criteria for biomedical papers and some complementary guidelines for the contributors of Magnesium Research. Society for the Development on Magnesium Research.

The quality criteria of biomedical journals--and of 'Magnesium Research' as such--are being given a new insight. This has practical implications for the contributors and the editors. General considerations on the patterns of evaluation of scientific papers highlight five types of errors, that may be incurred in submitted manuscripts. 1. The information conveyed may remain ambiguous: for example, lack of discrimination between acute and chronic patterns, or confusion between the clinical and toxicological consequences of pharmacological and physiological studies: for example it is a real scient

The implementation of person-centred plans in the community-care sector: a qualitative study of organizations in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Person-centred planning refers to a model of care in which programs and services are developed in collaboration with persons receiving care (i.e., persons-supported) and tailored to their unique needs and goals. In recent decades, governments around the world have enacted policies requiring community-care agencies to adopt an individualized or person-centred approach to service delivery. Although regional mandates provide a framework for directing care, it is unclear how this guidance is implemented in practice given the diversity and range of organizations within the sector. This

An assessment of the implementation of the HIV workplace policy in Akwa Ibom State: a cross-sectional descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Eliminating AIDS by 2030 will remain a mirage if obstacles to achieving zero new HIV infections and viral suppression, like stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV (PLHIV) are not eliminated. Several strategies and policies are targeted at this issue but it remains a huge challenge globally. Like other countries, Nigeria adopted the HIV in the Workplace policy (HIV WPP) in 2013, aimed at protecting the rights of PLHIV in the workplace. Akwa Ibom State (AKS), Nigeria, adopted this policy in 2014. However, since its adoption, its implementation has not been assessed.

Evaluation of a national smoke-free prisons policy using medication dispensing: an interrupted time-series analysis.

BACKGROUND: Internationally, smoking prevalence among people in prison custody (ie, people on remand awaiting trial, awaiting sentencing, or serving a custodial sentence) is high. In Scotland, all prisons implemented a comprehensive smoke-free policy in 2018 after a 16-month anticipatory period. In this study, we aimed to use data on medication dispensing to assess the impact of this policy on cessation support, health outcomes, and potential unintended consequences among people in prison custody. METHODS: We did an interrupted time-series analysis using dispensing data for 44 660 individuals

A program to limit urinary catheter use at an acute care hospital.

BACKGROUND: Urinary catheters are the major cause of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) and often may be unnecessary. We attempted to reduce the number of CAUTIs by limiting the use of urinary catheters. METHODS: The number of catheters and CAUTIs were recorded during a control period of 7 months. A program was implemented limiting these catheters to patients who had urinary tract obstruction, orders for hourly output measurements, breakdown of skin in areas exposed to urine in patients with documented urinary tract infections, or urine- associated skin irritation that was

The Mexican experience in monitoring and evaluation of public policies addressing social determinants of health.

Monitoring and evaluation (M&E) have gradually become important and regular components of the policy-making process in Mexico since, and even before, the World Health Organization (WHO) Commission on Social Determinants of Health (CSDH) called for interventions and policies aimed at tackling the social determinants of health (SDH). This paper presents two case studies to show how public policies addressing the SDH have been monitored and evaluated in Mexico using reliable, valid, and complete information, which is not regularly available. Prospera, for example, evaluated programs seeking to im

Health promotion policy in Sweden: means and methods in intersectoral action.

In Sweden different commissions have been working on legislation, prevention programmes and financing, and have aimed at implementing the Health For All strategy at national level. National programmes for cardiovascular diseases, cancer, accidental injuries, etc were established by parliamentary resolution in 1985. The role of health education has been extended: from the earlier concern with matters of individual lifestyle the focus has shifted towards motivating the community as a whole to take an active interest in its health. There is good public support in the areas of legislation, knowled

Multi-level determinants of comprehensive palliative care delivery for breast and cervical cancer patients in Ethiopia: using the socio-ecological model as an analytical framework.

INTRODUCTION: Comprehensive palliative care is essential for improving the quality of life of women with breast and cervical cancer in Ethiopia, yet services remain poorly organized, largely inaccessible, and concentrated in the capital. While existing studies have quantified service gaps, the multi-level determinants enabling or hindering comprehensive care remain under-explored, particularly how these factors differ between urban and rural settings. OBJECTIVE: To explore the multi-level determinants of implementing comprehensive palliative care for women with breast and cervical cancer in E

A resiliency lens on Medicaid policy disruptions: Insights from rural nursing home leaders.

BACKGROUND: Because Medicaid is the dominant payer of U.S. nursing home (NH) care, Medicaid policy changes can have wide-reaching effects, especially for NHs in rural communities. H.R. 1, or the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," passed in July 2025, enacted reforms projected to reduce Medicaid funding over the next decade. PURPOSE: This study examined (NH) leaders' perceived impact of these Medicaid changes through the lens of organizational resilience theory, a framework that explores how an organization anticipates threats, copes with adversity, and adapts to changes. METHODS: This qualitative

Mapping System Vulnerabilities in Anaesthesia Safety: A Role-Based Inquiry in Response to Fatal Fungal Meningitis Outbreaks in Mexico.

OBJECTIVES: Unsafe anaesthesia practices in Mexico have contributed to repeated outbreaks of fatal fungal meningitis, exposing broader health system vulnerabilities. This study aimed to analyse how structural weaknesses in perioperative care, spanning governance, workforce, and institutional practices, reflect deep gaps in health planning, regulation, clinical oversight and hospital management. METHODS: We applied a participatory, role-based systems mapping approach. A two-phase design method combined a survey to identify perceived system failures with structured, guided interprofessional, pa

Palliative care in surgery: Where are we at?

BACKGROUND: Palliative care should be delivered alongside surgical care for adults with serious illness. Yet, most do not routinely integrate palliative principles in their surgical practices. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to examine barriers to integration of palliative care in surgery using a socio-ecological framework. DESIGN: A qualitative study using semi-structured, video-based interviews was conducted. METHODS: Qualitative interviews were conducted between April and July 2023 in a tertiary academic center in Singapore. Surgeons were purposively sampled across various surgical subspecia

Interventions for prevention of bullying in the workplace.

BACKGROUND: Bullying has been identified as one of the leading workplace stressors, with adverse consequences for the individual employee, groups of employees, and whole organisations. Employees who have been bullied have lower levels of job satisfaction, higher levels of anxiety and depression, and are more likely to leave their place of work. Organisations face increased risk of skill depletion and absenteeism, leading to loss of profit, potential legal fees, and tribunal cases. It is unclear to what extent these risks can be addressed through interventions to prevent bullying. OBJECTIVES:

Hats off to success: changing head lice policy.

Pediculosis at school is an emotional and contentious issue. Many school nurses do not feel prepared to take on the task of changing long-standing school policy, even in the light of solid evidence to do so. This article explores one school nurse's experience in changing lice policy for her district.
