A buccosinusal fistula consists of a permanent communication between the oral cavity and the sinus. For the treatment of this complication, three modalities can be highlighted: sliding of the vestibular flap, palatal flap, or graft of cheek adipose tissue. Each of these treatment forms has disadvantages, which led to the development of the zetaplasty technique. Patient C.M., a 57-years-old male, sought the Surgery Clinic of the Federal University of Alfenas for the treatment of a broad buccosinusal communication. After anesthesia, a perilesional incision followed by an extended incision anteri

Any foreign body in the paranasal sinuses can cause chronic complications. It is therefore important to remove these foreign bodies meticulously. Various approaches are available to accomplish this. This article is a case report of a patient who had gutta-percha as a foreign body in left maxillary sinus, after a gutta-percha point had been used to trace a sinus to confirm that it was an oroantral fistula. Traditional surgical approaches to the maxillary sinus require invasive techniques, such as radical antrostomy and the Caldwell-Luc approach. These may result in further complications and mor

Oronasal actinomycosis is an infection seldom described in the literature, especially in the form of a co-infection with pulmonary tuberculosis. We report the case of a 48-year-old male admitted to the isolation ward due to active pulmonary tuberculosis, with a history of diabetes and alcohol abuse. While hospitalized, the patient complained of dysphagia and nasal regurgitation of food. The examination of the oral cavity revealed an oronasal fistula. The infecting agent was identified, and the treatment was successful. We also present a brief review of the literature, as well as a full descrip

Odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) is more common than historically thought, representing 25% to 40% of all maxillary sinusitis. Due to a lack of widely accepted diagnostic criteria and a specific international diagnostic code, a true overall prevalence is unknown. ODS may be caused by either a multitude of infectious dental pathologies or complications after dental procedures. The most common dental etiologies causing ODS are apical periodontitis (endodontic) and oroantral communication or fistula after dental extraction. Less commonly, ODS can evolve after dental implant or maxillary sinus bone gra

This analysis examined the types of retreatment in failed sinus bone grafts due to the development of maxillary sinusitis. Reoperation was performed in 7 patients. The types of reoperation included infection management, reconstruction of the sinus roof using a pedicled buccal fat pad and collagen membrane, oroantral fistula closure, sinus bone graft using an autogenous bone graft, and implant placement. In one case, sinusitis developed 14 months after the reoperation, but it was managed by incision, drainage, and administration of antibiotics. All sinus bone grafts that were performed during t

Introduction Maxillary sinus disease is common and numerous disorders can affect this anatomical area. Abnormalities can be classified as: non-neoplastic, neoplastic benign, and neoplastic malignant. Objective Evaluate through CT the prevalence of diseases in maxillary sinuses, using the Radiology Department's database of a hospital in São Paulo city. Methods The sample consisted of 762 facial CT scans that we divided into three groups: Group A (12-19 years old); Group B (20-49 years old); Group C (above 50 years old); and male or female. We considered the following pathological processes: I -

BACKGROUND: Oroantral communication (OAC) is the opening between the maxillary sinus and the oral cavity, which constitutes a gate for the mucosal infection in the maxillary sinus. On the other hand, an OAF develops when the OAC does not close spontaneously, remains manifest and is epithelialized. Several methods have been proposed to solve these situations, however, they are associated with increased postoperative morbidity and/or higher associated costs and require some experience of the surgeon to perform them. To overcome these disadvantages, the use of Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) is propos

The article provides an in-depth review focused on diagnosing oral surgery-related complications that may cause odontogenic sinusitis (ODS). It emphasizes the importance of evaluating patients with prior oral surgical procedures to determine whether the prior procedure is an ongoing infectious source of the ODS. Specifically, diagnostic evaluations will be described for detecting oroantral communications and fistulas, dental implant dislocation or protrusion, and whether implants and graft placed in maxillary sinuses are infected. It highlights the role of different oral examination techniques

Background: Oroantral communications (OACs) are pathological openings between the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus, often resulting from dental extractions. If not treated promptly, they may lead to sinus infections and persistent oroantral fistulas (OAFs). Objective: This report aims to present a minimally invasive technique for the closure of OACs using flowable composite resin stabilized within a network of crossing sutures and to assess its clinical efficacy. Case Descriptions: Two male patients, aged 27 and 31, presented with OACs measuring 8 mm and 6 mm in diameter following maxillary

The article explores the understudied pathophysiology of odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) development as a result of oral surgical complications such as oroantral communication (OAC) or fistula (OAF), maxillary sinus bone grafting, and dental implantation. A temporary OAC presents most often after dental extraction, especially with posterior maxillary teeth, though can happen with any oral surgical intervention. Maxillary sinus augmentation can also cause ODS, and while the pathophysiology is incompletely understood, it may be related to OAC/OAF formation or bone graft infection. Dental implants ma

Isolated cleft palate without cleft lip is a rare deformity. Cleft lip and cleft palate can sometimes develop in combination with a syndrome due to genetic causes. Affected patients have morbidity through life from birth and experience comprehensive treatment for such clefts including surgery. It is extremely rare that the untreated clefts are found during routine cadaveric dissection, since many patients have treatment for clefts in developed countries. Herein, we present a case of an untreated incomplete isolated cleft palate on the right side of the maxilla. An oronasal fistula was found in

Surgical procedures in posterior area of maxillary might cause an oroantral communication and iatrogenic sinusitis. An undetected oroantral communication can cause the penetration of foreign bodies, such as dental impression materials, in the maxillary sinus, thereby contributing to persistent sinusitis. Given the occurrence of a very rare clinical and medicolegal case of persistent and drug-resistant sinusitis due to radiologically undetected fragments of silicone paste for dental impression in the maxillary antrum, a literature review was pursued through sensitive keywords in relevant databa

INTRODUCTION: The oroantral communication is a pathologic communication between the oral cavity and maxillary sinus. It originates with extraction of the upper lateral teeth. Primary plastics communication, which is more extensive than 5 mm has been unsuccessful in 16%. Small power lasers have positive reaction on wounds healing. The aim of this work was to determine the lasers effects on slice epithelization after the plastics more extensive than 5 mm.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The experimental research was done on dogs with extraction of the upper second premolars on both sides, and formed oroa

Oroantral communication (OAC) is a known complication of maxillary tooth extraction that may lead to issues such as oroantral fistula formation and chronic maxillary sinus disease if left untreated. Although several surgical techniques for OAC closure have been described in the existing research, autotransplantation of a third molar represents a rarely reported alternative. This method not only allows for the closure of OAC but also restores masticatory function and may be an alternative to implantation. This review evaluates the available literature on third molar autotransplantation for OAC

INTRODUCTION: an oro-antral communication is defined as a permanent pathological connection between the maxillary sinus and the septic oral cavity. Several flaps can be used for the closure (buccal flap, palatal flap, combination techniques) but relapses occur often in case of a large defects and underlying general conditions. Bichat fad pad flap is a multipotent pedicled fatty tissue that is easily accessible from the oral cavity that can be used for the closure of medium-sized defects, even in immunocompromised patients due to its stem cell capacity.

Oro-antral communication (OAC) acts as a pathway for bacteria between the maxillary sinus and oral cavity, and is a common complication after the removal of a dental implant or extraction of a tooth from the maxillary posterior area. In the case of an untreated OAC, oro-antral fistula develops and becomes epithelialized. We aimed to introduce a treatment for OAC closure via a sinus bone grafting procedure using bone tacks and a collagen membrane with an allograft. The procedure was performed by applying an absorbable membrane made in pouch form. This membrane acted as a barrier for closing the
