The dark side of fixed retainers: Case series.

This article focuses on on the presentation and management 9 adult patients who experienced complications because of their maxillary or mandibular fixed retainers 5-33 years after orthodontic treatment. Such complications include the development of an anterior crossbite, open bite, incisal cant, and twist- and x-effects. The detrimental effects on periodontal health were highlighted, especially in the mandibular canines. A range of fixed retainer types was identified, including flexible spiral wire bonded to 4 maxillary or 6 mandibular anterior teeth, rigid wire bonded to mandibular canines on

A Comparative Assessment of Three Mandibular Retention Protocols: A Prospective Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: Fixed retainers have been advocated for the prevention of anterior mandibular crowding after orthodontic treatment. However, limited data is available to help clinicians choose a retention protocol that is acceptable in terms of stability, emergencies, and side effects in the long term. It was the aim of this study to assess survival and alignment stability of the 0.016" x 0.022" stainless steel wire compared to more common protocols. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three different mandibular fixed retention protocols were compared in 600 consecutive patients: 1. 0.0215" multistrand wire (MW)

Effect of psidium guajava fruit suspension on bone turnover biomarkers following orthodontic tooth movement in wistar rats.

Bone turnover biomarker levels serve as valid tools for assessing bone resorption and formation. While the standard retention protocol consists of using fixed retainers, removable retainers, or both, attempts have been made to explore alternative approaches using biological agents. Psidium guajava fruit is reported to possess osteoanabolic properties. These properties might be useful in preventing orthodontic treatment relapse. To assess the effect of orally administered Psidium guajava fruit suspension on alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and osteocalcin (OC) levels in the gingival crevicular fluid

A progressive approach for the use of occlusal devices in the management of temporomandibular disorders.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) represent a broad spectrum of conditions associated with the temporomandibular joints and the neuromuscular system. Evidence-based diagnostic criteria for various TMDs are emerging, while corresponding treatment procedures remain less clear. As a result, the clinician may be uncertain how to best care for TMD patients. The objectives of this evidence-based review were to outline the various types of occlusal devices, assess the efficacy of occlusal splints in treating TMD patients, and create a treatment rubric based on diagnostic criteria and condition sever

An Innovation of Postsurgical Nasal Retainer in a Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate Patient.

Postoperative nasal asymmetry is a notable problem following primary cleft lip repair and cleft rhinoplasty in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate. Postsurgical nasal retainer could play an essential role in maintaining the corrected position of the nose during the healing process. However, the manufactured retainers are usually not affordable, nor individualized. The authors report the efficacy of our custom-made postoperative nasal retainer, made from an oxygen nasal cannula, acrylic resin, and orthodontic wire made of stainless steel, in a patient with complete unilateral cleft li

Custom-made resin-bonded attachments supporting a removable partial denture using the spark erosion technique: a case report.

A removable partial denture supported by resin-bonded precision attachments was constructed for a patient with intraoral symptoms of a cleidocranial dysostosis. Because of the anatomic situation, the youth, and the preprosthetic orthodontic treatment of the patient, a conventional prosthetic solution seemed inappropriate. Custom-made attachments were constructed with the spark erosion technique. They were fixed to the abutment teeth with resin-bonded retainers. The combination of the resin-bonding technique with the modern technology of spark erosion thus allowed a conservative approach to the

[Magnetic resonance imaging artefacts and fixed orthodontic attachments].

OBJECTIVES: Orthodontic appliances are often removed before magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans because they are known to produce artefacts. The purpose of this study was to find the exact indications for removal of various fixed attachments when imaging four specific areas of the head and neck. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty patients requiring an MRI scan of the head for medical reasons volunteered for this investigation. One of four different types of fixed attachments (stainless steel brackets, titanium brackets, ceramic brackets with metal slots, and stainless steel retainers) were assig

Orthodontic retention.

This article briefly describes several factors that should be considered during orthodontic retention. These factors may influence occlusal stability following the completion of the active phase of orthodontic therapy. Orthodontic retention is an important part of orthodontic treatment. It should always be considered and included in the initial stages of treatment planning, rather than added on at the end of treatment as an after-thought.

Patient Perspectives on Orthodontic Treatment Challenges, Knowledge, and Attitudes: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic treatment involves the placement of appliances such as brackets, bands, and wires that are foreign objects within the oral cavity. These appliances, combined with the long treatment duration, can pose various physical and psychological challenges for patients. Understanding these challenges and assessing patient knowledge and attitudes may facilitate targeted patient education and improve treatment compliance. METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey was conducted among 150 patients (aged 15-30 years) undergoing active orthodontic treatment. A structured,
