Malpractice claims associated with foot surgery.

Surgery of the foot constitutes a substantial portion of orthopedic procedures, performed by both orthopedic surgeons and doctors of podiatric medicine. Little research exists on the medicolegal implications of foot surgery amongst these specialties. This study seeks to investigate the different medical and legal factors associated with foot surgery-based malpractice litigation. Malpractice data between 2004 and 2017 was collected using the VerdictSearch legal database. Cases involving foot surgery were identified, and case information including physician specialty, procedure, medical outcome,

Orthopedic manifestations and management of patients with von Willebrand disease.

Von Willebrand Disease is the most common inherited bleeding disorder and can present challenges to orthopedic surgeons in managing perioperative bleeding and treating orthopedic problems that manifest as a result of the disease. Appropriate history taking is essential to identify these patients prior to surgery. The most effective management of von Willebrand disease will be achieved with close consultation between the surgeon, anesthesiologist, internist or pediatrician, hematologist, and patient. With appropriate planning, these patients can undergo major orthopedic procedures safely and ef

MakoTM robotic-arm-assisted total hip and total knee arthroplasty outcomes in an orthopedic oncology setting: A case series.

BACKGROUND: The MAKO Robotic-Arm system is a cutting-edge technology which combines both computed tomography (CT) scanning and three-dimensional planning to determine the ideal size and orientation of implants prior to bone resection. It is typically utilized within a general orthopedic setting for joint replacement procedures, such as total joint arthroplasties. However, its use within orthopedic oncology, which contains a much more compromised patient population and more complex surgical treatment, is not well documented within the literature. QUESTION/PURPOSES: To determine the patient out

Soft Tissue Masses in Patients Who Underwent Cosmetic Fat Transfer Procedures for Gluteal Augmentation: A Report of 3 Cases.

CASES: Three patients were referred to our musculoskeletal oncology service after undergoing autologous fat grafting procedures. Two masses were suspected to be "soft tissue sarcomas," and one was due to a mass of unknown origin. These findings have not been reported in the orthopedic literature and may generate potential referrals for orthopedic oncologists. CONCLUSIONS: Awareness of potential complications of procedures from other surgical specialties and their radiographic characteristics is of utmost importance. The clinical and radiographic findings that could assist in distinguishing a

Posterior tibial artery pseudoaneurysm: a rare complication following orthopedic surgery-a case report.

Orthopedic procedures, although commonly associated with complications such as joint infections, deep venous thrombosis, or wound infections, rarely result in vascular complications. We present a case of a posterior tibial artery (PTA) pseudoaneurysm following blunt trauma during an elective orthopedic procedure involving the removal of osteosynthesis material. The patient developed leg swelling and intermittent hemorrhage between 1 and 3 weeks postoperatively. Doppler ultrasonography and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) angiography confirmed the presence of a PTA pseudoaneurysm. The

Determinant Causes of Limb Amputation in Ethiopia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Most amputees suffered from lack of rehabilitation services and went on streets as glorified beggars. However, there is a paucity of information about determinant causes of amputation in Ethiopia. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to estimate pooled prevalence of limb amputation and its determinant causes in Ethiopian population. METHODS: Worldwide databases such as PubMed/MedLine, Web of Science, CINAHL, Embase, Scopus, and Science Direct were searched to retrieve pertinent articles. Grey literatures were also looked in local and national repositor

Addressing common orthopaedic calamities with microsurgical solutions.

Reconstructive microsurgery has been an essential aspect of orthopaedic surgery and extremity reconstruction since the introduction of the operating microscope in the mid-20th century. The reconstructive ladder ranges from simple healing by secondary intention to complex procedures such as free tissue transfer and vascularized composite allotransplantation. As orthopaedic surgery has evolved over the past 60 years, so too have the reconstructive microsurgical skills that are often needed to address common orthopaedic surgery problems. In this article, we will discuss a variety of complex ortho

Commonly Used Opioids in the Orthopedic Operating Room: A Narrative Review.

Orthopedic surgical procedures are consistently associated with significant postoperative pain due to extensive tissue manipulation, osseous injury, and inflammatory responses. Effective perioperative analgesia is therefore fundamental to successful orthopedic outcomes, influencing early mobilization, complication rates, length of hospital stay, and patient satisfaction. Although opioid-sparing and enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathways have gained popularity, opioids remain central to analgesic management in orthopedic operating rooms. This narrative review examines the opioids most

GLP-1 Agonists in Orthopedic Surgery: A Narrative Review of Bone Health and Surgical Implications.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, commonly used for glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes and for weight loss in obese patients, have been increasingly used due to their effectiveness in treating these conditions and in reducing cardiovascular events. Yet evidence is limited surrounding their impact on bone health and on patients undergoing orthopedic procedures. This narrative review explores the mechanisms of action of GLP-1 agonists, their effects on bone health, and the implications of their use in perioperative patents undergoing orthopedic surgery, with an em

Surgery in patients with hemophilia: is thromboprophylaxis mandatory?

Patients with hemophilia are considered low risk for thromboembolic complications. However, in the presence of risk factors for thrombosis, such as surgical procedures, and intensive replacement therapy this complication has been reported. Major orthopedic surgeries are often required in patients with hemophilia, due to the presence of hemophiliac arthropathy. In individuals that do not have hemophilia, orthopedic surgeries are particularly well recognized as high risk for venous thromboembolism, and the use of thromboprophylaxis for this condition is recommended. However, for hemophilia patie
