The rising clinical demand for treating musculoskeletal defects necessitates viable alternatives to traditional bone grafting. Alginate, a naturally derived polysaccharide, has become a leading bioink for 3D bioprinting owing to its abundance, rapid ionic crosslinking, and scalable manufacturing. Yet, intrinsic drawbacks-poor cell adhesivity, unpredictable degradation kinetics, and overall low bioactivity-continue to impede clinical translation. Advances in chemical modification and mechanical reinforcement have begun to reprogram alginate into dynamic extracellular matrix mimics with enhanced

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have gained significant attention in regenerative medicine for their potential in treating a variety of diseases even intractable ones, due to their ability to differentiate into various cell types and promote tissue repair. In addition to their regenerative properties, MSCs possess potent immunomodulatory effects, which make them particularly promising for treating orthopedic conditions and musculoskeletal disorders complicated by chronic inflammation, infection, or other comorbidities. This review explores the immunomodulatory mechanisms of MSCs and their rol

Although the knee joint and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) experience similar incidence of cartilage ailments, the knee orthopedics field has greater funding and more effective end-stage treatment options. Translational research has resulted in the development of tissue-engineered products for knee cartilage repair, but the same is not true for TMJ cartilages. Here, we examine the anatomy and pathology of the joints, compare current treatments and products for cartilage afflictions, and explore ways to accelerate the TMJ field. We examine disparities, such as a 6-fold higher article count and 2

The COVID-19 pandemic has catalyzed the use of novel teaching modalities to enhance the provision of remote veterinary education. In this study, we describe the use of immersive virtual reality (iVR) as a teaching aid for veterinary medicine students during their orthopedics clinical rotation. Student sentiments were assessed using voluntary electronic surveys taken by veterinary students before and after the rotation. The most noteworthy benefits students reported were improved engagement with the course content, information retention, radiographic interpretation, and clinical reasoning skill

Presurgical infant dentofacial orthopedic treatment (PSIOT) is a process by which cleft maxillary and soft tissue segments can be moved before surgical repair of lip. One of the PSIOT approaches used is the fixed PSIOT using Latham appliances. In this article, the authors provide an overview of this approach and the step-by-step process of placing these appliances intraorally. Prospective randomized clinical studies are necessary to definitively answer concerns surrounding the long-term effects of PSIOT.

Primordial cells or stem cells are multipotent undifferentiated cells with the capacity to originate any type of cell in the organism. They may have their origins in the blastocyst and thus are classified as embryonic, or tissues developed in fetuses, newborns or adults and thus are known as somatic stem cells. Bone marrow is one of the main locations for isolating primordial cells, and there are two lineages: hematopoietic and mesenchymal progenitor cells. There are several uses for these undifferentiated cells in orthopedics, going from cartilaginous lesions in osteoarthrosis, osteochondriti

Cells, scaffold, and growth factors are crucially important in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. Progress in science and technology has enabled development of these three factors, with basic research being applied clinically. In the past decade, we have investigated tissue regeneration in animal models of musculoskeletal disorders by using cells, scaffold, and delivery systems which has been relatively easy to apply and develop in clinical settings. Moreover, microRNA (miRNA), which are important in biological processes and in the pathogenesis of human diseases, have been used in r

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is defined as the application of an electric current to neuromuscular tissue to elicit a muscle contraction. It is typically applied in a clinical setting to strengthen muscle, particularly the quadriceps femoris, through repetitive contractions. Most studies to date involving NMES have been conducted using conventional lead-wired, or "single path" devices, and while effective, these devices have inherent limitations around comfort and incomplete muscle recruitment. In a prospective, randomized, controlled, single-blind trial, investigators found tha

BACKGROUND: War-trauma, especially due to blast injury, can be associated with long bone fracture. Immediate external fixation of fractures, followed by internal fixation when the patient is medically stabilized (damage control orthopedics [DCO]), is the U.S. Army policy for war-related fractures. Data on infectious outcomes when DCO is used for war-trauma fractures are scant.
METHODS: A retrospective review of U.S. war-trauma patients from 2003 to 2007 with femoral or tibial fractures treated by DCO was conducted. Fisher's Exact and Mann-Whitney tests were used for comparisons.
RESULTS: Fif

OBJECTIVE: Concerns regarding the efficacy, toxicity, tolerance, dependence, and abuse of opioids have limited their use for patients with chronic spine pain. In our previous study of rheumatology clinic patients, opioid analgesics were found to be highly effective, produced only mild side effects, and had few instances of opioid abuse. The purpose of this study was to replicate our previous study in another large cohort of patients with nonmalignant pain due to well-defined spinal diseases.
METHODS: Opioid use was studied in 230 orthopedics spine clinic patients by retrospective analysis of

Patient-centered palliative care involves effective and empathetic communication between the physician and patient, with the ultimate goal of providing improved quality of life for individuals who have terminal illnesses. Although several nonoperative and operative treatment options are available to improve the patient's quality of life, providing palliative care requires more than technical expertise and knowledge. Orthopedic surgeons need to be supportive facilitators who inform patients of the available treatments, risks, and benefits and incorporate these treatments into the wishes of pati

Patients suffering from von-Willebrand-disease or hemophilia A or B are the most common patients with coagulation disorders in orthopedic hospitals. Patients suffering from hemophilia A or B are treated with pure factor VIII or IX concentrates. We prefer recombinant products. The goals are normal levels of F VIII or F IX activity during the operation and postoperatively. In order to save costs the continuous infusion is recommended. Approximately 30 % of products and costs my be saved. The prevalence of von-Willebrand-disease is very high in Europe and USA (1 %). Typical presentation of these

Since the early eighties arthroscopy has become an important part of orthopaedics. Virtually every joint can be examined with an arthroscope. Apart from the diagnostic possibilities, an increasing number of arthroscopically guided surgical operations are possible. Knee arthroscopy can be used therapeutically for many conditions, including meniscal lesions, refractory synovitis, cruciate ligament lesions, tibial plateau fractures and osteochondral defects; in the shoulder it can be applied to lesions of the glenoid lip or the rotator cuff; in the ankle and foot, for osteochondral fractures and

The work analyses 55 cases of traumatic osteomyelitis of the leg bones, open fractures of the leg bones, and medial fractures of the femoral neck. Patients with medial fractures of the neck of the femur were treated by endoprosthesis after Mur-Kaplan. Endolymphatic antibiotic therapy was included in the complex of therapeutic measures in each group of patients. This method allowed suppuration of the postoperative wounds to be avoided and promoted in this manner rehabilitation of the patients.

BACKGROUND: Hypophosphatasia is an inherited metabolic bone disorder characterized by cartilage and bone abnormalities. Adult hypophosphatasia presents with a wide range of symptoms, including refractory fractures, recurrent fractures, stress fractures, and reduced bone mineral density, along with extraskeletal manifestations such as myalgia, muscle weakness, and fatigue. Some patients with these symptoms may have undiagnosed hypophosphatasia. While hypophosphatasia is treatable with enzyme replacement therapy, early diagnosis is often difficult owing to its diverse clinical presentations. Thi

Muscle sonography is used in rheumatology, neurology, geriatrics, sports medicine and orthopedics. Muscular atrophy with fatty and connective tissue degeneration can be visualized and must be interpreted in conjunction with the sonographic findings of the supplying nerves. Sonography is becoming increasingly more important for the early diagnosis of sarcopenia in rheumatology, geriatrics and osteology. Even if its significance has not yet been conclusively clarified, many publications confirm the high reliability of the method. Sonography can ideally be used in addition to magnetic resonance i
