This paper reviews personal experience in the treatment of recurrent haemarthrosis and chronic synovitis by non-surgical means. Experience with synoviorthesis with rifampicine and radioactive colloids is analyzed, and a multiple chromosomal study to demonstrate safety of radioactive injections is described. Fifty-two adults and 31 children, who were treated with osmic acid for one knee joint, were observed for 8-18 years. No other local treatment of the knee joints was given. In adults no difference was seen in clinical or radiological findings between joints treated and not treated with osmic acid. The kinetic-energy dependence of SO2 activated by Os+ was studied by guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometry. Species observed in endothermic reactions were OsO+, OsO2+ or OsS+, and OOsS+. The kinetic energy-dependent cross sections were modeled to yield 0 K bond dissociation energies (BDEs) of 5.01 ± 0.06 eV (Os+-O), 5.15 ± 0.07 eV (Os+-O2), 4.50 ± 0.17 eV (Os+-S), and 4.22 ± 0.11 eV (Os+-SO). The electron transfer reactions between ferrocytochrome c and three isomorphic hexacyanide complexes, [Fe(CN)6]3-, [Os(CN)6]3- and [Ru(CN)6]3-, have been studied using the method of photoexcitation. The transfer rates for [Os(CN)6]3- and [Ru(CN)6]3- are, respectively, about 45- and 200-times higher than that of [Fe(CN)6]3-. A reorganization energy of approx. 0.8 eV was found for the cytochrome c-hexacyanide system when the data were analyzed according to the theory of Marcus.

Vacuolation of the retinal pigment epithelium in the foveomacular region of aging rhesus monkey eyes was re-examined with the eyes initially fixed in osmium tetroxide to retain the alcohol-soluble lipid. All vacuoles were found to be completely occupied by lipid material. Similar cells were positive to oil red O. The vacuolation of the pigment epithelial cell is considered to be a form of lipoidal degeneration.

In previous work of our laboratory it was demonstrated that collidine (2,4,6-trimethylpyridine) abolishes the core osmiophilia and chromaffin reaction from rat pinal gland and vas deferens nerves. Nigerian Echis carinatus venom incorporated into sphingomyelin-cholesterol liposomes stabilized with osmium tetroxide produced a rapid, sustained and protective immune response when injected i.v. into sheep. The response was similar to that reported earlier in mice. The implications of the findings are discussed in relation to the production of cheaper and more effective antivenoms. The possible use of immunostimulants for increasing the protective effect of antisera raised using this method are also considered.

There has been an ongoing interest in the reactions of nitric oxide (NO) with heme model compounds, with the goal of interpreting related reactions occurring in biology. With recent evidence that higher oxides (NO2-, *NO2, N2O3, etc.) may also be formed under bioregulatory conditions, there is a need to understand the reactivities of these compounds with such models. This review discusses the mechanistic studies of the reactions of iron, ruthenium, and osmium metalloporphyrin complexes with NO and the higher nitrogen oxides.
