Allergies to metals as a cause of failure of joint prostheses has historically been a controversial issue. Loosening of a prosthesis may be due to trauma, infection of the surrounding area, or a faulty implantation of the device. However, cases of loosening of the device do occur without any history of the above criteria. This leads one to consider other explanations for this phenomenon, such as sensitivity of the tissues to one of the metals in the implant. The following presentation demonstrates that metal allergies are a surgical concern when considering joint prostheses, or internal fixati

Osteonecrosis is common in sickle cell anemia but has been rarely reported with sickle cell trait. Two cases of osteonecrosis of the femoral head caused by sickle cell trait are presented. One patient's diagnosis was delayed because the association of osteonecrosis and sickle cell trait was not recognized. The previous reported cases of this association are discussed, emphasizing diagnostic implications for 12 black patients presenting with hip pain.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to review the characteristics of 'implant presence-triggered osteonecrosis' (IPTO) in the literature and identify possible differences between IPTOs and 'implant surgery-triggered osteonecrosis' (ISTO).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Reviews using PubMed and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were performed from 2009-2018; the focus was on medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) and dental implants. In addition, the hospital records of all patients presented in our department with IPTO were retrospectively reviewed. In both studies, the followin

OBJECTIVE: In patients with non-traumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH), the shoulder is one of the major affected sites secondary to the proximal and distal femur in cases of multiple osteonecrosis. The present study attempted to investigate whether technetium bone scintigraphy is useful for screening of non-traumatic osteonecrosis of the shoulder (ONS).
DESIGN AND PATIENTS: A total of 170 shoulder joints in 85 patients with ONFH were evaluated by bone scintigraphy and the findings compared with those of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The MR diagnosis was used as the gold stand

We examined both knees in 60 patients with nontraumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head with three-dimensional MRI. We found osteonecrosis of the patella in 9 patients (10 knees) and osteonecrosis of the femoral or tibial condyles/metaphyses in 35 patients (61 knees). In the patella, the necrosis was located in the proximal half and tended to develop in patients with other necrotic lesions in the knee.

BACKGROUND: Osteochondrosis and osteonecrosis affect epiphyseal and apophyseal ossification centres and lead to structural changes in bone and cartilage. They differ in terms of aetiology, age and prognosis. Osteochondrosis dissecans and Osgood-Schlatter disease primarily affect adolescents, while spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee (SONK/Ahlbäck's disease) predominantly occurs in older adults.
OBJECTIVE: This article presents four clinical cases to illustrate typical manifestations, imaging diagnostics, and therapeutic strategies for osteochondronecrosis in children, adolescents and adults

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 is an emergent infection, the long-term complications of which are still under study. While hypercoagulability is a common feature in severe cases, the incidence of ischemic complications such as osteonecrosis remains unknown. Previous studies on SARS-CoV1 found an increase in osteonecrosis 3-36 months after infection, and it is still unclear if this was related to the use of corticosteroids or to the virus itself.
METHODS: We introduce a 78-year-old woman who complained of right knee pain and swelling a month after COVID-19 infection onset. Her knee radiography showed no

Osteonecrosis (ON) is an acquired debilitating skeletal disorder, which is caused by a multitude of traumatic and non-traumatic etiological factors. Vascular damage, mechanical stress and increased intraosseous pressure have been discussed as contributors to ON. The optimal treatment of ON remains to be determined, since the current gold standard, core decompression, is insufficiently effective. Specific properties of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) provide the rationale for their assessment in advanced stages of ON: Osteoinductive potential has been demonstrated and MSC preparations of suita

Osteonecrosis is a disease with diverse pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and management. It may be associated with some medications used to treat systemic issues with bone metabolism. A few cases of jaw bone osteonecrosis have been associated with raloxifene. In this paper, the authors present a clinical report of a 64-year-old woman who presented with a necrosis foci in the right alveolar ridge of the mandible, associated with continued raloxifene use.

Osteonecrosis is one of the most devastating musculoskeletal manifestations of sickle cell disease and most commonly affects the femoral head. Although the exact pathophysiology of this condition in patients with sickle cell disease is unknown, it is suggested that red cell sickling and repetitive vaso-occlusion may be associated with tissue hypoxia, inflammation, and subsequent bone necrosis and collapse. If left untreated, osteonecrosis can be extremely debilitating and may lead to severe pain, loss of function, and degenerative joint changes. Although several conservative management approac

OBJECTIVES: To define the proportion of osteonecrosis (ON) in our patient population with lupus and to identify factors associated with the development of ON in systemic lupus erythematosus, as well as to carry out a descriptive analysis of ON cases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Observational retrospective study of 158 patients with SLE (ACR 1982 criteria). Demographic and laboratory data, clinical manifestations, SLICC, SLEDAI, cytotoxic and steroid treatments were compared. In patients with ON, we analyzed time of disease progression and age at ON diagnosis, form of presentation, joints involved,

Bone marrow signal changes on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) after meniscectomy have been reported as evidence of postmeniscectomy osteonecrosis, but this pathology is unclear. We conducted a study to follow-up cases with bone marrow signal changes on MRI after meniscectomy and investigate the pathology of underlying lesions. Of 136 patients with no presurgical evidence of osteonecrosis, 29 had juxta-articular bone marrow signal changes on MRI after arthroscopic meniscectomy and subsequently underwent conservative therapy. In 6 of these 29 patients, clinical symptoms and radiographic changes

Clinical cases in mineral and bone metabolism : the official journal of the Italian Society of Osteoporosis, Mineral Metabolism, and Skeletal Diseases2007eng
This mini-review will focus on the management of a patient with bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis (BON). In order to review the subject the authors report a case of a patient with prostate cancer and metastatic bone disease who was treated with zoledronic acid. Prior to cancer the patient was treated with risedronate for osteopenia but had discontinued this treatment when cancer was diagnosed. During the description of each aspect of the case, a discussion of the rationale used for the case management is presented with support of the available literature. Aspects of interest include the

A 25-year-old white woman was diagnosed with Crohn's disease involving the small and large intestines. She had a complex clinical course that required treatment with multiple pharmacological agents, including intravenous, oral and rectal corticosteroids. She also received parenteral nutrition with lipid emulsions. Finally, repeated intestinal resections and drainage of perianal abscesses were required. Her disease was complicated by gallstones, urolithiasis and hip pain. After osteonecrosis was diagnosed, joint replacements were performed. Review of the pathological sections from the resected

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association1995eng
Osteonecrosis of the medial femoral condyle is an uncommon complication of meniscal surgery. Whether this disease is associated with the original medial meniscus lesion or with the arthroscopic procedure is not yet known. We present two cases in which osteonecrosis has developed shortly after arthroscopy was performed for medial meniscus pathology. Magnetic resonance imaging has been the best tool to diagnose and follow up the changes in the involved area. Concerning the etiology, the authors raise the question of whether the medial compartment overloading observed in both of these cases had a

OBJECTIVE: To report cases of osteonecrosis in patients who were HIV positive but had no apparent risk factors for osteonecrosis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A computer search of records from two university-affiliated teaching hospitals yielded eight cases of osteonecrosis in HIV-positive patients and patients with AIDS. The patients' charts and radiographic records were reviewed to determine possible risk factors for osteonecrosis.
RESULTS: In four of the eight patients no definite risk factors for osteonecrosis could be found.
CONCLUSION: Osteonecrosis may be a musculoskeletal complication of H

The authors report the case of a 35-year-old woman undergoing surgery in 1976 for a bronchial carcinoid tumour, considered to be benign. Twelve years later, diagnostic evaluation of liver metastases led to the discovery of an asymptomatic lesion of D10, the CT scan and NMR appearances of which were suggestive of osteonecrosis, a diagnosis confirmed histologically. Investigations were repeated 2 years later because of spinal pain. While NMR and CT scan remained compatible with bone necrosis, biopsy on this occasion confirmed the presence of carcinoid tumour. These rare tumours metastasise littl
