PURPOSE: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a type of malignancy with a high prevalence in southern China and Southeast Asia. The primary treatment modality is radiation therapy (RT). Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the skull base remains one of the most serious complications after RT, affecting survival time and quality of life. Thus far, skull base ORN has been seldom reported and can be difficult to distinguish and easy to misdiagnose. In this retrospective study, we report the incidence of skull base ORN and analyze its associated factors in an attempt to decrease the occurrence of ORN.

INTRODUCTION: The treatment for head and neck cancer with radiotherapy can cause different alterations of the auditory system. We report two cases of chronic otitis of the external and middle ear secondary to osteoradionecrosis of the temporal bone. This article aims to report the experience of the surgical approach in such condition.
CASES REPORT: The first patient was treated with radiotherapy in his childhood for a cerebellar tumor. He developed years later a cholesteatoma which invaded the mastoid cavities through a destruction of the external auditory canal. The second was treated for a

OBJECTIVES: Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is common in the jaws after radiotherapy. We hypothesized that the mandible is more susceptible to ORN than the tibia, based on site disparity in hypoxic, hypocellular, and hypovascular tissue breakdown.
STUDY DESIGN: Twelve rats received 50 Gy irradiation to mandible or tibia; 4 of the rats further received minor surgical trauma to the irradiated sites. Structural and cellular skeletal changes were assessed with computerized tomography, histology, and immunostaining.
RESULTS: Mandible developed ORN with 70% mean bone loss 10 weeks after irradiation (P <

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is one of the common late adverse effects that follow radiation therapy for head and neck cancers. ORN usually develops on the mandible and less frequently on the maxilla. We present three cases of ORN of the cervical vertebrae, which is rarely reported. Two patients suffered from secondary osteomyelitis after neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by definitive concurrent chemoradiation therapy with a hyperfractionated and an accelerated hyperfractionated regimen, respectively. For these patients, the high intensity of treatment was considered the cause of ORN. The third p

Treatment of patients with osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the mandible associated with pathologic fractures usually consists of a continuity resection of the mandible, leading to severe impairment of the patient's health and quality of life. Conservative treatment may be alternatively attempted; however, it is not usually employed. Here, we report a successful conservative treatment of ORN associated with pathologic fracture. A 48-year-old black man who had undergone radiotherapy for a squamous cell carcinoma in the tongue 6 years previously sought care complaining of facial swelling and draining

INTRODUCTION: Although relatively uncommon, osteoradionecrosis (ORN) remains a serious complication following radiotherapy. Various therapeutic approaches, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), are utilized in managing ORN. This study aims to evaluate the role of HBOT in ORN management and to identify predictive factors influencing the evolution of head and neck ORN after HBOT.
METHODS: This retrospective study includes 46 patients who received HBOT for head and neck ORN between 2017 and 2020. The patients were divided into two groups: Group 1 (n=36) included those with regression or st

BACKGROUND: Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a severe complication following radiotherapy (RT), particularly after mandibular reconstruction with a fibula free flap. Risk prediction remains challenging due to limited data.
METHODS: We conducted a multicenter retrospective study including 294 patients who underwent fibula free flap reconstruction and adjuvant RT. A predictive nomogram for ORN was developed using logistic regression with stepwise backward selection, validated via 10-fold cross-validation.
RESULTS: ORN occurred in 9.9% of patients. Eight variables were retained in the final model, w

Skull base osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a serious late complication of radiotherapy in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) that significantly affects their quality of life (QOL) and may be life-threatening. We aimed to report the clinical efficacy of endoscopic radical resection of the necrotic tissue and simultaneous skull base repair for patients with ORN.We enrolled 39 patients with ORN who underwent endoscopic radical necrotic tissue resection with concomitant skull base repair using muscle or mucosal flaps at our institution. The 5-year overall survival (OS) was determined. Pain,

IMPORTANCE: Mandibular osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a progressive disease that can be difficult to treat. Conservative measures often fail, while conventional definitive management requires a morbid segmental resection with osteocutaneous reconstruction. Evidence of the anterolateral thigh fascia lata (ALTFL) rescue flap technique's safety, effectiveness, and long-term outcomes is needed.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the long-term outcomes of the ALTFL rescue flap procedure for treating patients with mandibular ORN.
DESIGN, SETTINGS, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a retrospective medical record review

IMPORTANCE: Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) has been shown to affect up to 20% of all head and neck cancer patients receiving radiation therapy. Despite its prevalence, a standard definitive therapy to treat this condition has yet to be available. A novel treatment modality with pentoxifylline, tocopherol, and clodronate (PENTOCLO) was first reported in the literature in 2005. There has since been a steady rise in the number of studies exploring the efficacy of PENTOCLO in treating ORN in head and neck patients.
OBJECTIVE: This article investigates the efficacy of PENTOCLO in treating ORN in head an

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the jaw occurs due to the damaging effects of ionizing radiation used in the treatment of head and neck cancer, including oral cavity or oropharyngeal, nasopharyngeal, and salivary gland sites. Medical treatments for ORN have limited effectiveness in advanced cases, often necessitating resection of affected bone with microvascular reconstruction using a bone-containing free flap in advanced cases. Surgical innovations in minimally invasive free fascial and periosteal flaps have shown promise in restoring blood supply and halting disease progression, although they ar

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy (RT) is a key component in the multimodal treatment approach for head and neck cancer (HNC). Post-therapeutic surgical and/or dental interventions on the jawbone carry a risk of developing osteoradionecrosis (ORN). To mitigate this risk, dental examinations and, if necessary, treatment should be conducted prior to RT. However, the consistent implementation of these recommendations in routine dental practice remains uncertain. This study aimed to evaluate whether insured persons of AOK Saxony-Anhalt (AOK ST) utilise dental services in accordance with current treatment r

PURPOSE: Temporal bone osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a severe complication that can occur when the temporal bone lies within the field of radiation therapy (RT), mainly for head and neck cancer. Currently, there is no universally accepted treatment approach, but both conservative and surgical management options have been proposed. We present the outcomes of surgically treated cases and propose our surgical strategy for complete management.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted to identify temporal bone ORN cases that were primarily treated surgically at two centres between 2005 and Janua

OBJECTIVE: This in vitro study aimed to analyze the effects of ionizing radiation on immortalized human osteoblast-like cells (SaOS-2) and further assess their cellular response in co-culture with fibroblasts. These analyses, conducted in both monoculture and co-culture, are based on two theoretical models of osteoradionecrosis - the theory of hypoxia and cellular necrosis and the theory of the radiation-induced fibroatrophic process.
DESIGN: SaOS-2 cells were exposed to ionizing radiation and evaluated for cell viability, nitric oxide (NO) production, cellular morphology, wound healing, and
