Inflamed adipose tissue: A culprit underlying obesity and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

The incidence of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction is increasing in patients with obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and in the aging population. However, there is a lack of adequate clinical treatment. Patients with obesity-related heart failure with preserved ejection fraction display unique pathophysiological and phenotypic characteristics, suggesting that obesity could be one of its specific phenotypes. There has been an increasing recognition that overnutrition in obesity causes adipose tissue expansion and local and systemic inflammation, which consequently exacerbates cardiac

Litter Size Reduction as a Model of Overfeeding during Lactation and Its Consequences for the Development of Metabolic Diseases in the Offspring.

Overfeeding during lactation has a deleterious impact on the baby's health throughout life. In humans, early overnutrition has been associated with higher susceptibility to obesity and metabolic disorders in childhood and adulthood. In rodents, using a rodent litter size reduction model (small litter) to mimic early overfeeding, the same metabolic profile has been described. Therefore, the rodent small litter model is an efficient tool to investigate the adaptive mechanisms involved in obesogenesis. Besides central and metabolic dysfunctions, studies have pointed to the contribution of the end

Obesity and enhanced diabetes and cardiovascular risk in adult rats due to early postnatal overfeeding.

To investigate possible permanent consequences of an early postnatal overfeeding, the following experimental model was used: Male Wistar rats were divided into three groups after birth: (1) Small litters with 3-4 newborns (overnutrition), (2) normal litters with 12 animals (normonutrition), and (3) large litters with 20-24 newborn rats (undernutrition). After weaning all animals had free access to tap water and standard pellet diet. The serum insulin level of animals from small litters on day 15 of life was highly significantly increased as compared to the other groups. These overfed hyperinsu

Double burden of malnutrition among children under five years in Saudi Arabia: a cross-sectional study of prevalence and determinants.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition among children under 5 years remains a major global public health concern. It encompasses both undernutrition and overnutrition, which can coexist within the same population. Estimating the prevalence of malnutrition among preschool children, will contribute to the limited body of city-level nutritional epidemiology studies in Saudi Arabia. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated factors of malnutrition among children under 5 years attending primary health care centers (PHCs) in Taif, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among

Differential gene expression in neonatal calf muscle tissues from Hanwoo cows overfed during mid to late pregnancy period.

Maternal nutrition significantly influences fetal development and postnatal outcomes. This study investigates the impact of maternal overfeeding during mid to late pregnancy on gene expression in the round and sirloin muscles of Hanwoo neonatal calves. Eight cows were assigned to either a control group receiving standard nutrition (100%) or a treated group receiving overnutrition (150%). After birth, tissue samples from the round and sirloin muscles of neonatal calves were collected and subjected to RNA sequencing to assess differentially expressed genes (DEGs). RNA sequencing identified 43 DE

Nutrition in Alcoholic Liver Disease: An Update.

Malnutrition is a change in body composition owing to disordered nutrition associated with a decrease in function and poor clinical outcomes. Malnutrition can result from overnutrition, undernutrition and inflammatory activity. Patients with alcoholic liver disease are at increased risk for malnutrition. In this article, we discuss the different methods used to assess malnutrition, prevalence of malnutrition, potential mechanisms underlying malnutrition, and its treatments in patients with alcoholic liver disease.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: a multi-system disease influenced by ageing and sex, and affected by adipose tissue and intestinal function.

In recent years, a wealth of factors are associated with increased risk of developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and NAFLD is now thought to increase the risk of multiple extra-hepatic diseases. The aim of this review is first to focus on the role of ageing and sex as key, poorly understood risk factors in the development and progression of NAFLD. Secondly, we aim to discuss the roles of white adipose tissue (WAT) and intestinal dysfunction, as producers of extra-hepatic factors known to further contribute to the pathogenesis of NAFLD. Finally, we aim to summarise the role of NA

The effects of prenatal undernutrition and postnatal high-fat diet on hypothalamic Kiss1 mRNA and serum leptin levels.

Prenatal undernutrition and postnatal overnutrition increase the risk of some metabolic disorders in adulthood, and hypothalamic leptin resistance makes an important contribution to these effects. Leptin plays important roles in the maintenance of reproductive function, and its actions might be partially mediated by kisspeptin, which is a potent positive regulator of gonadotropin-releasing hormone. In this study, the effects of prenatal undernutrition and postnatal overnutrition on reproductive parameters and sexual maturation during the peripubertal period were evaluated. Rats subjected to pr

Leptin and adiponectin: from energy and metabolic dysbalance to inflammation and autoimmunity.

There is a growing evidence that both overnutrition and undernutrition negatively interfere with immune system. The overnutrition has been found to increase susceptibility to the development of inflammatory or autoimmune diseases. On the other hand, starvation or malnutrition has been more associated with increased susceptibility to infections. In the regulation of immune and inflammatory processes, white adipose tissue plays a critical role as an endocrine organ which produces number of active peptides, called adipokines. The adipokines, leptin and adiponectin represent a critical link among

Animal models of NASH: getting both pathology and metabolic context right.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of referral to liver clinics, and its progressive form, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), can lead to cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease. The main risk factors for NAFLD/NASH are the metabolic abnormalities commonly observed in metabolic syndrome: insulin resistance, visceral obesity, dyslipidemia and altered adipokine profile. At present, the causes of progression from NAFLD to NASH remain poorly defined, and research in this area has been limited by the availability of suitable animal models of this disease. In the pas

Age-period-cohort analysis of breast cancer mortality.

The objective of this study is to develop a hypothesis about the carcinogenesis of breast cancer from a descriptive analysis. This study is an application of the age-period-cohort model (APC model) on the mortality rate of breast cancer in Taiwan over the period from 1964 to 1991. Age-specific and age-adjusted mortality rates are described and then age, period, and cohort effects are separately analysed. (Female) breast cancer mortality data in Taiwan from 1964 to 1991 were abstracted from the annual reports of the Taiwan Provincial Department of Health. The population data in Taiwan from 1964

Kwashiorkor and sarcopenic obesity: Two Sides Of The Same Coin?

Kwashiorkor is a form of protein energy malnutrition, while obesity usually occurs due to overnutrition. These syndromes, therefore, are considered to be poles apart. However, there are many similarities between the two conditions. Both are forms of malnutrition, and have common features in causation, clinical presentation, comorbidities and complications, as well as strategies for management. In this review, we discuss whether kwashiorkor and obesity, especially sarcopenic obesity, are two sides of the same coin or not.

Environmental Exposures around Conception: Developmental Pathways Leading to Lifetime Disease Risk.

Environment around conception can influence the developmental programme with lasting effects on gestational and postnatal phenotype and with consequences for adult health and disease risk. Peri-conception exposure comprises a crucial part of the 'Developmental Origins of Health and Disease' (DOHaD) concept. In this review, we consider the effects of maternal undernutrition experienced during the peri-conception period in select human models and in a mouse experimental model of protein restriction. Human datasets indicate that macronutrient deprivation around conception affect the epigenome, wi

Long-Term Glucose Starvation Induces Inflammatory Responses and Phenotype Switch in Primary Cortical Rat Astrocytes.

Astrocytes are the most abundant cell type in the brain and crucial to ensure the metabolic supply of neurons and their synapse formation. Overnutrition as present in patients suffering from obesity causes astrogliosis in the hypothalamus. Other diseases accompanied by malnutrition appear to have an impact on the brain and astrocyte function. In the eating disorder anorexia nervosa (AN), patients suffer from undernutrition and develop volume reductions of the cerebral cortex, associated with reduced astrocyte proliferation and cell count. Although an effect on astrocytes and their function has

Malnutrition and type 2 diabetes mellitus across diverse global populations: a systematic review of observational evidence.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition, encompassing undernutrition, overnutrition, and micronutrient deficiency represents a global public health challenge with substantial implications for the development and clinical progression of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The bidirectional relationship between nutritional status and glycemic regulation remains incompletely characterized across diverse geographic and socioeconomic settings worldwide, warranting a systematic synthesis of the available observational evidence. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Ite

[Hypertrophic osteodystrophy of the dog (author's transl)].

The clinical and radiological findings of 21 dogs with hypertrophic osteodystrophy are described. In three cases a detailed pathologico-anatomic examination was performed also. The dogs concerned were young animals of large breeds with clinical symptoms of lameness, fever, pain, and thickened metaphyses of the long bones. Radiologically the condition was characterised by enhancement of the metaphyses and periosteal new growths of the bone. The pathologico-anatomic examination revealed a disturbed endochondral and periosteal ossification. Overnutrition as a possible cause of the condition is di

Maternal and Early-Life Nutrition and Health.

Nutritional challenges prior to and during gestation, lactation, and early life are known to influence the lifelong health of the infant. In this editorial, I briefly discuss the 13 articles published in this Special Issue, "Maternal and Early-Life Nutrition and Health". This Special Issue discusses topics including maternal nutrition behaviors, maternal overnutrition/obesity, maternal iron deficiency, breastfeeding, and others. This issue paves the way to better understand perinatal nutrition and how it can impact maternal and offspring health.

Pathogenic aspects of fructose consumption in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD): A narrative review.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), formerly referred to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), has become a global health concern with a still increasing prevalence. One of the major contributing factors to its pathogenesis is overnutrition. In recent years, a discussion has been started that not only general overnutrition but also specific dietary patterns like the so-called 'Western diet' composed of foods rich in saturated fats, cholesterol, and sugar (especially fructose) but low in fiber and polyunsaturated fats, may contribute to the development of MASL
