Cancer screening among the overweight and obese in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Despite increased cancer incidence and mortality among overweight and obese men and women, U.S. studies have reported the reduced use of cancer screening among these subjects. We sought to analyze the relationship between overweight/obesity and cancer screening practices using population-based Canadian data. METHODS: Responses from adults surveyed in the Canadian Community Health Survey 2003 who provided complete information regarding variables of interest were analyzed. Cancer screening modalities included Pap smear testing, mammography, and fecal occult blood testing, and were b

Influence of overweight and obesity on upper endoscopic findings.

BACKGROUND: In previous studies, increasing body mass index (BMI, kg/m(2)) was related to chronic gastrointestinal symptoms, such as frequent vomiting, upper abdominal pain, bloating and diarrhea. However, there have been no reports about the relationship between increasing BMI and abnormal upper endoscopic findings such as gastritis or ulcer. METHODS: The study group consisted of 27 319 individuals who underwent medical checkup at a healthcare center from 1 January to 31 December 2003. The following classification of BMI was applied. (i) underweight; BMI < 18.5; (ii) normal weight; 18.5 <or=

A cognitive behavioral therapy program for overweight children.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the 1-year results of a multidisciplinary, cognitive behavioral therapy treatment program for overweight and obese children. STUDY DESIGN: Children (n = 73; 8 to 15 years old) participated in a prospective study aimed at reduction of the body mass index-standard deviation score (BMI-SDS), adapting a healthy lifestyle and creating a positive self-image and higher self-esteem, by use of a group approach and parental involvement. Reduction in BMI-SDS and percent overweight were measured and analyzed by use of MIXED modeling. RESULTS: The participants achieved a 0.6 BMI-SDS

The relationship of breast-feeding, overweight, and asthma in preadolescents.

BACKGROUND: Breast-feeding is suggested to be associated with overweight or asthma in children. Overweight and asthma may share common environmental influences of which breast-feeding may be one. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated whether short duration of exclusive breast-feeding and subsequent overweight were associated with asthma. METHODS: A nested case-control study included 246 children with pediatric allergist-diagnosed asthma and 477 controls without asthma at age 8 to 10 years. Information on exclusive breast-feeding was obtained from questionnaire data. Overweight at 8 to 10 years of age was

Definable somatic disorders in overweight children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the frequencies and clinical presentation of definable somatic disorders in children who are overweight. STUDY DESIGN: We assessed prospectively 1405 children aged 4 to 16 years who were overweight and came to our specialized clinic for endocrinology and obesity with a standardized diagnostic procedure. In a subgroup of 223 children, we sought mutations in the melanocortin-4-receptor gene (MC4R). RESULTS: Endocrine or syndromal disorders were diagnosed in 13 children (<1%; 4 with hypothyroidism, 1 with Cushing's syndrome, 1 with growth hormone deficiency, 2 with pseudoh

Country development and the association between parity and overweight.

INTRODUCTION: Parity is associated with overweight and obesity in developed countries and has been related to maternal depletion in poor developing countries. However, the literature from developing countries is limited and may not represent current stages of development. METHODS: We analyzed data from 50 Demographic and Reproductive Health Surveys conducted between 1992 and 2003. We examined the association between parity (proxied by number of live births) and overweight (body mass index (BMI)> or =25 kg/m(2)) in relation to level of country wealth and development. RESULTS: The odds ratio (

[Overweight and obesity in childhood and adolescence. Is prevention possible?].

The prevalence of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents is increasing. In Germany, 10-20% of children and youth are overweight and obese. Childhood obesity is associated with cardiovascular and other comorbidities. 25% suffer from arterial hypertension and/or hypercholesterolemia, 1% from diabetes mellitus type 2. In addition, one third suffer from orthopedic and psychosocial disorders. Therefore, countermeasures are necessary. Kindergarten or school settings offer a possibility for preventive measures. Results, however, are inconsistent and depend on several factors such as socioe

Overweight as a risk factor in children: a focus on ethnicity.

The prevalence of overweight in youth is increasing dramatically in the United States. The intimate relationship of obesity and overweight with cardiovascular risk factors and diabetes in adults raises concern for the likelihood of subsequent disease development in children. Ethnic minorities are so disproportionately affected by overweight that a call to action is necessary. The International Society on Hypertension in Blacks convened this work group as part of a larger effort to focus on cardiovascular risk protection beginning in childhood and adolescence, entitled the "Children are Our Mes

Tall stature and progressive overweight in mitochondrial encephalopathy.

We describe two children carrying an inherited T899C mutation in the mitochondrial ATPase 6 gene with mild encephalopathy and normal postnatal growth followed by tall stature and obesity. No familial tall stature, endocrine anomaly or advanced skeletal age were present. Failure to thrive is a characteristic finding in most patients with a mitochondrial disease. Our observations suggest that children with encephalomyopathy, even in the presence of a significant clinical overgrowth, should be screened for a possible defect in oxidative phosphorylation.

Obesity and overweight in young adults: the CARDIA study.

The associations of body size with age, race, sex, and education in young adults were examined in 5,115 black and white, men and women ages 18-30 years. Black women were more obese than white women with greater mean levels of body mass index (25.8 vs 23.1 kg/m2), subscapular skinfold thickness (19.9 vs 15.2 mm), and waist girth (76.7 vs 72.0 cm), all P less than 0.0001. Black women were more likely to exceed 20% of ideal body weights (black women 23.7%, white women 9.1%, P less than 0.0001). No similar differences were found in men. Associations of measures of body size with age and education

Overweight and obesity in middle-aged British men.

Overweight and obesity have been examined in 7735 middle-aged men in 24 British towns. Half the men exceeded the body mass index (BMI) range associated with minimum mortality (20-25 kg/m2). Social class differences in BMI were marked and obesity was more marked in manual workers. The association of reduced BMI with cigarette smoking and of increased BMI with stopping smoking was most clearly seen in manual workers. With increasing alcohol intake, BMI increased progressively, but the effect in the heaviest drinkers was probably diminished by concurrent heavy smoking. Mean BMI decreased with inc

Relationship of overweight to hiatus hernia and reflux oesophagitis.

In a prospective study in 1224 patients referred for upper alimentary endoscopy, reflux oesophagitis was found in 195 (16%) of the patients and hiatus hernia in 249 (20%). In patients with reflux oesophagitis a coexisting hiatus hernia was found in 68%. The weight-for-height index (W/H1.8), which expresses the degree of overweight, was significantly higher both in patients with hiatus hernia and in the patients with reflux oesophagitis, indicating an overweight of approximately 5% in both groups. The overweight was most pronounced in oesophagitis grades 1 and 2, whereas in patients with severe

Insurance coverage for weight loss: overweight adults' views.

BACKGROUND: Given the prevalence of obesity and associated chronic conditions among U.S. adults, wellness benefits are an increasingly popular approach to promoting weight loss. PURPOSE: The goal of the study was to assess overweight and obese adults' beliefs about the helpfulness of insurance coverage of weight loss-related benefits, their willingness to pay for such benefits, and whether these opinions differ by individuals' weight or health insurance type. METHODS: A national survey was fielded in 2012 among non-pregnant, overweight, and obese adults who had seen a primary care provider i

Afterschool program participation, youth physical fitness, and overweight.

BACKGROUND: Fighting childhood obesity has become a key policy focus. The role of community-based interventions to promote physical activity is an important part of an overall strategy to increase physical activity for youth. PURPOSE: This study examines whether community-based afterschool physical activity programs lead to improved youth fitness and lower obesity rates. METHODS: Individually linked, longitudinal administrative data were used from local afterschool programs and two school districts in one California community to follow 1105 students from the 2006-2007 to 2008-2009 school yea

Overweight, obesity, and neighborhood characteristics among postpartum Latinas.

BACKGROUND: Weight gain during the childbearing years and failure to lose pregnancy weight after birth contribute to the development of obesity in Latinas. DESIGN AND METHODS: Madres para la Salud (Mothers for Health) is a 12-month prospective, randomized controlled trial exploring a social support intervention with moderate-intensity physical activity to effect changes in body fat, systemic and fat tissue inflammation, and depression symptoms in sedentary postpartum Latinas. This paper describes the initial body composition of the sample, social support, and neighborhood contextual correlati
