High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) oxygen therapy is used widely for hypoxemic respiratory failure. However, it is unknown whether the use of HFNC is compatible with retaining the ability to eat and drink of patients with end-stage respiratory diseases as a part of palliative care. A retrospective study was conducted on subjects with hypoxic respiratory failure due to end-stage respiratory diseases, including interstitial pneumonia and malignant respiratory diseases, who were treated with HFNC or reservoir mask oxygen therapy and died with do-not-resuscitate (DNR) and do-not-intubate (DNI) status.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxaemia in post-surgical patients of esophageal cancer (EC) is common in thoracic departments. However, few studies have investigated the role of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) compared with conventional oxygen therapy (COT).
METHODS: A retrospective study was implemented to enroll hypoxemic patients after esophagectomy who were treated by HFNC or COT immediately after extubation between January 2019 and December 2019. We compared the effect of HFNC or COT in patients regarding the vital signs and arterial blood gases, the incidence of anastomotic leakage, postoperative pulmona

Respiratory monitoring in patients receiving oxygen therapy for acute care is mandatory at the initial stage of in-hospital management given the potential risk of clinical worsening. Although some patients benefit from close monitoring in the ICU, the vast majority of them are managed in general wards with reduced staff and clinical supervision. The objective of monitoring is to detect early clinical deterioration, which may help prevent in-hospital cardiac arrest. In addition to the clinical and usual evaluations (eg, breathing frequency, breathing pattern, oximetry, and oxygen flow requireme

OBJECTIVES: Reintubation after failed extubation is associated with increased mortality and longer hospital length of stay. Noninvasive oxygenation modalities may prevent reintubation. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the safety and efficacy of high-flow nasal cannula after extubation in critically ill adults.
DATA SOURCES: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Web of Science.
STUDY SELECTION: We included randomized controlled trials comparing high-flow nasal cannula to other noninvasive methods of oxygen delivery after extubation in critically ill adults.

Low- and middle-income countries and resource-limited regions are major contributors to perinatal and infant mortality. Oxygen is widely used for resuscitation in high- and middle-income settings. However, oxygen supplementation is not available in resource-limited regions. Oxygen supplementation for resuscitation at birth has adverse effects in human/animal model studies. There has been a change with resultant recommendations for restrictive oxygen use in neonatal resuscitation. Neonatal resuscitation without supplemental oxygen decreases mortality and morbidities. Oxygen in resource-limited

OBJECTIVES: Trans-nasal humidified rapid insufflation ventilatory exchange (THRIVE) has demonstrated utility in extending the apneic window in the perioperative setting. Its benefits in facilitating tubeless anesthesia are recognized during elective laryngotracheal surgeries. The use of THRIVE and administering higher fractional inspired oxygen concentrations in laser laryngeal surgery (LLS) remains controversial due to the theoretical risk of airway fires. A scoping review of the literature describing institutional experiences with THRIVE during LLS was conducted.

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory failure (ARF) is a respiratory disease in which ventilation dysfunction of the lungs occurs at rest due to various factors, resulting in oxygen deprivation and carbon dioxide (CO2) retention. In recent years, high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC), as a new type of oxygen therapy, has attracted increasing attention. Compared with traditional oxygen therapy, HFNC adopts nasal catheter to make it more in line with the physiological and respiratory characteristics of the human body, and thus can provide a higher and more constant inhalation of oxygen. This retrospective stud

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic, debilitating disease characterized by juxta epithelial fibrosis of the oral cavity and regarded as a potentially malignant disorder. Numerous treatment modalities ranging from various drugs to behavioral therapy have been tried with inconsistent results with varying degrees of success reflecting low predictability, requiring further evaluation and standardization. Novel treatment modality such as Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves inhalation of 100% oxygen at increased atmospheric pressure usually ranging between 2.0 and 2.5 atmospheres for p

The purpose of this study was to report severe keloids caused by hydrogen cyanide injury. Hydrogen cyanide poisoning is still a problem as an occupational disease in China. We report a 37-year-old man with severe hydrogen cyanide poisoning. The patient fell on the floor after inhalation of hydrogen cyanide and was burned on his back by hydrocyanic acid. Sequential treatment included amyl nitrite by inhalation, intravenous sodium nitrite 3%, and intravenous sodium thiosulfate 25%. Other treatment consisted of incision of the trachea, mannitol and furosemide, antibiotics, and nutrient support me

A 32-year-old man who had worked as a welder for 13 years was hospitalized for a fever and hemosputum with dyspnea. He was diagnosed with welding fume-associated lung disease with alveolar hemorrhaging and acute respiratory failure. Despite surviving the acute phase with corticosteroid therapy, hypoxemia persisted after a month and a half, requiring home oxygen therapy. As a result of the introduction of nintedanib, his clinical findings gradually improved, and the patient was weaned from oxygen therapy after six months. Inhalation of a large amount of welding fumes in a short period can cause

BACKGROUND: Early warning systems (EWS) used across the world typically assign a fixed number of points to patients receiving supplemental oxygen, regardless of amount. This ordinal binary approach may fail to recognise deteriorating patients who have an increasing oxygen requirement with otherwise stable observations. It is unclear whether weighting oxygen beyond binary scoring improves recognition of deterioration.
AIMS: We aimed to describe all general adult EWS that grade oxygen beyond binary scoring (part 1). Where reported, we summarised the performance of graded oxygen EWS in compariso

The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate the influence of airflow via high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) on the duration of laryngeal vestibule closure (dLVC) and Penetration-Aspiration Scale (PAS) scores. Twenty-nine healthy adults participated in a repeated-measures design. Each participant completed a videofluoroscopic swallow study while receiving airflow via HFNC across a control condition of zero flow and conditions of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 L/min. Five raters rated dLVC and PAS scores. Laryngeal vestibule closure was complete on all swallows. Linear regression revealed
