A clinical comparison of pain perception to the Wand and a traditional syringe.

OBJECTIVES: This study compared the pain response of a group of 40 volunteers to the Wand with the response to syringe injections. STUDY DESIGN: Of 240 total injections given, 120 were with the Wand system, and 120 were with the traditional aspirating syringe. Three injections were evaluated: injections to the middle superior alveolar (MSA) of the maxillary right first premolar and the maxillary left first premolar; palatal injections of the maxillary right first premolar and the maxillary left first premolar; and inferior alveolar nerve injection (IAN) of both the right and the left sides. The relationship between Iranian women's perception of their birth team's compliance with medical ethics and their perception of labor pain.

BACKGROUND: A safe and satisfactory childbirth experience with the least amount of pain constitutes one of the main domains of reproductive healthcare. The most important aspect of labor pain management is the moral and professional commitment of the health professionals and caregivers involved in creating a pleasant delivery. The present study examines the relationship between Iranian women's perceptions of their birth team's compliance with medical ethics and their perception of labor pain. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 200 women opting for natural childbirth. The sam

Perception of being worse based on changes in pain and disability in people with low back pain.

Low back pain is highly prevalent and disabling worldwide. Several investigations focus on detecting improvement in patient-reported outcomes that reflect minimal important differences following care. However, determining minimal important differences for worsening is just as important. This study determined the estimated probability of people with low back pain reporting being worse as a function of their change in pain and disability scores following a chiropractic encounter. This secondary analysis of The Danish Chiropractic Low Back Pain Cohort (ChiCo) included 2,848 adults (mean age = 45

Perceptions of pain in women with headache: a laboratory investigation of the influence of pain-related anxiety and fear.

The present study compared the responses of women with headache (chronic tension-type, n = 27; migraine, n = 27) and controls (n = 27) to an acute pain laboratory task, the cold pressor test. Participants' pain perception (i.e., threshold and tolerance) and their fear/anxiety associated with pain were assessed during days 1, 2, or 3 of menses. Analyses pertaining to participants' responses to the cold pressor test (ie, pain threshold and tolerance) failed to show statistically significant group differences, even when covarying pain-related anxiety/fear. Analyses did, however, reveal significan

The brain-heart axis in the perception of cardiac pain: the elusive link between ischaemia and pain.

Angina pectoris is a common symptom and one that can have profound implications for the patient. However, it correlates poorly with the extent of myocardial ischaemia and with prognosis. In order to understand more fully the heterogeneity of the experience of chest pain, we have adopted the technique of functional neuroimaging, where positron emission tomography is used to measure regional cerebral blood flow as an index of regional neuronal activation, during myocardial ischaemia in patients with coronary artery disease. We have been able to delineate those brain areas that are involved in th

A comparison of pain perceptions in women with fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis: relationship to depression and pain extent.

Two studies were conducted to characterize the pain of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS); to compare it to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) pain; and to examine the relationships between depression, pain extent, and pain description. Two methods of administering the McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ) were used. When the MPQ was administered in the standard manner, FMS pain could not be distinguished from RA pain. When participants were allowed to select as many words from an adapted MPQ as they wished, significant differences in word choice emerged. Depression and pain extent were major predictors of group di

Influence of sex and gonadal hormones on pain perception in a neuropathic pain model in old rats.

Despite growing evidence that nociceptive stimuli are processed and modulated by distinct neural mechanisms depending on biological sex and aging, these factors remain underrepresented in experimental and clinical pain research. Most preclinical studies continue to rely on young male rodents, overlooking potential differences in neuropathic pain perception between sexes and age groups. Understanding these variations is critical for advancing pain management strategies. Aged rats (22 months old) of both sexes were divided into three groups: orchiectomized (Orch) males, non-orchiectomized (Non-o

Exploring Pain on Social Media: Observational Study on Perceptions and Discussions of Chronic Pain Conditions.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain, affecting 30.3% of the global population, constitutes a major public health and social challenge. It is associated with disability, emotional distress, and diminished quality of life. Conditions, such as fibromyalgia, headache, paraplegia, neuropathy, and multiple sclerosis are characterized by persistent pain and limited social and medical understanding. This contributes to patient isolation and increases mental health burden. In recent years, social media, particularly X (formerly Twitter), has emerged as a key space for analyzing health-related perceptions and expe

Painful distortions: people with painful knee osteoarthritis have biased visuospatial perception of the environment.

Visuospatial perception is thought to be adaptive-ie, hills are perceived as steeper when capacity is low, or threat is high-guiding appropriate interaction with the environment. Pain (bodily threat) may similarly modulate visuospatial perception, with the extent of modulation influenced by threat magnitude (pain intensity, fear) and associated with behaviour (physical activity). We compared visuospatial perception of the environment between 50 people with painful knee osteoarthritis and 50 age-/sex-matched pain-free control participants using 3 virtual reality tasks (uphill steepness estimati

Short-term pre- and post-operative stress prolongs incision-induced pain hypersensitivity without changing basal pain perception.

BACKGROUND: Chronic stress has been reported to increase basal pain sensitivity and/or exacerbate existing persistent pain. However, most surgical patients have normal physiological and psychological health status such as normal pain perception before surgery although they do experience short-term stress during pre- and post-operative periods. Whether or not this short-term stress affects persistent postsurgical pain is unclear. RESULTS: In this study, we showed that pre- or post-surgical exposure to immobilization 6 h daily for three consecutive days did not change basal responses to mechani

Pain perception and patient satisfaction after conservative versus surgical low back pain management: Questionnaire-based comparative study.

Low back pain remains a leading cause of disability and uncertainty persists regarding optimal treatment selection between conservative and surgical approaches. A key reason that individuals have trouble deciding on the best route to take, surgical type or conservative type, as treatment options is because there is still a lack of clarity surrounding which type of treatment options to use. Therefore, it is of interest to analyse pain perception and patient satisfaction in 100 participants (50 patients receiving surgery, 50 patients receiving conservative treatment). Both conservative and surgi

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Orientation to Pain, and Pain Perception in Ex-Prisoners of War Who Underwent Torture.

OBJECTIVE: Studies suggest that torture survivors often experience long-term chronic pain and increased pain perception. However, it is unclear whether the actual experience of torture or rather the subsequent posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) explains these pain problems. Furthermore, although catastrophic and fearful orientations to pain have been suggested to play a significant role in the association between trauma and pain, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study examined whether chronic pain and pain perception among torture survivors are associated with torture experienc

Critical evaluation of mouse models used to study pain and loss of pain perception in diabetic neuropathy.

A number of studies have addressed diabetic neuropathy (DN) in transgenic and knock out mouse models to unravel the molecular mechanisms underlying metabolic pain and loss of pain perception. However, it is difficult to compare these studies with each other or even with human DN due to experimental differences including the type of diabetes, the background strain of the respective mouse model, the methods of diabetes induction and the duration of diabetes, animal age and gender. To receive useful information for DN from genetically modified mice, it is therefore mandatory to first define the a

Variations in Current and Desired Limb Perception in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: People with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) often experience body perception disturbances, whereby features of the affected limb are perceived as distorted. However, these disturbances vary widely between individuals, as does the effectiveness of treatments aimed at altering body perception. It remains unclear whether such variation reflects distinct underlying patterns of disturbances and whether individuals differ in how they would change their limb perception. METHODS: We conducted an exploratory online survey to examine current and desired perceptions of the affected lim

Neural variability reliably encodes interindividual differences in the perception of pain intensity.

Neural activity varies dramatically across time. While such neural variability has been associated with cognition, its relationship with pain remains largely unexplored. Here, we systematically investigated the relationship between neural variability and pain, particularly individual differences in pain intensity discriminability, in six large electroencephalography (EEG) datasets (total N = 633), where healthy volunteers (Datasets 1-5; N = 606) and postherpetic neuralgia patients (Dataset 6; N = 27) received painful or nonpainful sensory stimuli. We found robust correlations between neural va

Current understanding of the link between angiotensin-converting enzyme and pain perception.

The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is known to affect diverse physiological processes that affect the functioning of many key organs. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) modulates a variety of bioactive peptides associated with pain. ACE inhibitors (ACEis) have found applications in the treatment of cardiovascular, kidney, neurological and metabolic disorders. However, ACEis also tend to display undesirable effects, resulting in increased pain sensitization and mechanical allodynia. In this review, we provide comprehensive discussion of preclinical and clinical studies involving the evaluation
