Children's sleepiness facilitates the effect of vicarious learning on the development of fear.

A substantial body of research demonstrates the importance of sleep for emotional processing and learning as well as the association between sleep problems and heightened anxiety. However, there is currently no research exploring the impact of sleepiness on vicariously learned fear responses. Experiment 1 (N = 38) first demonstrated no effect of trait or state sleepiness on children's (7-11 years of age) subjective ratings of fear. Experiment 2 (N = 42) and Experiment 3 (N = 46) used an established vicarious learning paradigm to demonstrate that trait sleepiness facilitated vicariously acquire

Estrogen treatment effects on cognition, memory and mood in male-to-female transsexuals.

Gonadal hormones, particularly estrogens, have been suggested to influence memory and cognitive tasks that show sex differences. Previously, we reported that male-to-female (M-F) transsexuals undergoing estrogen treatment for sex re-assignment scored higher on verbal Paired Associate Learning (PAL) than a transsexual control group awaiting estrogen treatment. The present study used a more robust design to examine further associations between estrogen and cognition. We assessed additional aspects of memory, including visual, spatial, object and location memory, other cognitive abilities that sh

MCKG-SL: Knowledge graph-based multi-feature cross-aggregation synthetic lethality prediction for KRAS gene.

KRAS (Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog) is the most commonly mutated oncogene in human cancer. Targeting synthetic lethal (SL) partners in the setting of oncogenic KRAS is an alternative therapeutic strategy for KRAS-mutant malignancies. However, existing SL prediction algorithms are limited by incomplete understanding of complex biological system interaction networks or ignore some information in the local association of gene pairs. To overcome these challenges, we propose a novel Knowledge Graph-based Synthetic Lethality model named MCKG-SL, which learns the interaction information

Cognitive Predictors of Decoding Skills in Newcomer and Monolingual French-Speaking Children.

PURPOSE: Newcomer dyslexic children face a double disadvantage: They must catch up on the schooling delay caused by their late arrival in France, while the lack of early diagnostic tools for dyslexia delays their access to appropriate intervention. However, cognitive predictors of decoding skills in alphabetic scripts are well known. Clinicians and teachers could use the latter for early identification of children at risk of reading disorders. This study aimed to determine whether the main cognitive predictors of decoding skills in monolingual children efficiently predict reading skills in new

Predicting the onset of Alzheimer's disease using Bayes' theorem.

Bayes' theorem describes the effect of new information (e.g., a test result) on the probability of an outcome (e.g., a disease). Likelihood ratios for separate tests can be combined to assess the joint effect of their results on disease probability. This approach has been used to develop a test package for Alzheimer's disease that consists of some simple cognitive tests (Paired Associate Learning Test, Trailmaking Test, and Raven's Progressive Matrices) combined with age and family history of dementia. A total of 1,454 subjects who had been recruited into the Medical Research Council Elderly H

Vagus nerve stimulation during training fails to improve learning in healthy rats.

Learning new skills requires neuroplasticity. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) during sensory and motor events can increase neuroplasticity in networks related to these events and might therefore serve to facilitate learning on sensory and motor tasks. We tested if VNS could broadly improve learning on a wide variety of tasks across different skill domains in healthy, female adult rats. VNS was paired with presentation of stimuli or on successful trials during training, strategies known to facilitate plasticity and improve recovery in models of neurological disorders. VNS failed to improve either

Contrastive learning of heart and lung sounds for label-efficient diagnosis.

Data labeling is often the limiting step in machine learning because it requires time from trained experts. To address the limitation on labeled data, contrastive learning, among other unsupervised learning methods, leverages unlabeled data to learn representations of data. Here, we propose a contrastive learning framework that utilizes metadata for selecting positive and negative pairs when training on unlabeled data. We demonstrate its application in the healthcare domain on heart and lung sound recordings. The increasing availability of heart and lung sound recordings due to adoption of dig

Anosmia in COVID-19 could be associated with long-term deficits in the consolidation of procedural and verbal declarative memories.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Long-COVID describes the long-term effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In long-COVID patients, neuropsychological alterations are frequently reported symptoms. Research points to medial temporal lobe dysfunction and its association with anosmia in long-COVID patients. This study aims to investigate the acquisition and consolidation of declarative and procedural memory in long-COVID patients and to explore whether anosmia is related to these dissociated memory functions. METHODS: Forty-two long-COVID participants and 30 controls (C) were recruited. The s

Covert face recognition in prosopagnosia: a dissociable function?

Covert face recognition was investigated in a patient with prosopagnosia without object agnosia. This patient performed well in various face processing tasks like expression analysis and feature processing and had relatively preserved semantic knowledge about persons, but was slightly impaired in the visual matching of unfamiliar faces. In face-name paired-associate relearning task, covert face recognition was demonstrated to be above-chance. However, as this task cannot be meaningfully applied to control subjects, results do not necessarily indicate that the degree of covert face recognition

Evidence for linguistic deficit in nonlexical processing in reading. A study of a Spanish-speaking patient.

Previous studies have shown that in the so-called opaque languages (those in which spelling does not correspond to pronunciation), there are relatively independent routes for lexical and nonlexical processing, that is, for words and nonwords, both in spoken and in written language. On the other hand, in the so-called transparent languages (those in which pronunciation corresponds to written forms), empirical evidence is scarcer. In this study of a neurological patient (parieto-temporal lesion), speaker of a transparent language (Spanish) showing a specific deficit in nonlexical reading process

Brain regions associated with inverse incentive learning: c-Fos immunohistochemistry after haloperidol sensitization on the bar test in rats.

Inverse incentive learning is the loss by stimuli of their ability to elicit approach and other responses. We used c-Fos immunohistochemistry to identify brain regions associated with inverse incentive learning. Rats that had daily treatments with haloperidol (0.25mg/kg) paired with placing their forepaws on a horizontal bar elevated 10cm above the floor initially descended almost immediately but over days descent latencies grew longer, revealing inverse incentive learning. Control rats that were tested daily and received haloperidol (Unpaired group) or saline later in their home cage showed n

Trace conditioning: abolished by cerebellar nuclear lesions but not lateral cerebellar cortex aspirations.

The trace conditioning paradigm in which the conditioned stimulus-unconditioned stimulus (CS-US) interval is longer and the US and CS do not overlap requires retention of a 'trace' of the CS to associate it with the US. This task is difficult, requiring for learning about 5 times the number of trials to criterion as the standard delay task. The present study was undertaken to determine if: the cerebellar interpositus nucleus is essential in trace as well as in delay conditioning; and the lateral cerebellar cortex is involved when CS-US association over longer time intervals is required. The use of stimulus dimensions in judgement making in spider fearful and nonfearful individuals.

This study uses a multidimensional scaling approach to investigate the hypothesis that spider fearful individuals give priority to a threat-safety dimension when making judgments. The results show that when making judgments about stimuli, spider fearful individuals (1) placed significantly greater comparative weighting on a threat-relevant dimension than on a non-emotive dimension (colour), and (2) tended to rate threatening pairs of stimuli and safe pairs of stimuli as more similar than did the nonfearful group. This prioritised dimensional processing suggests a mechanism by which phobics can

Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation of the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex impairs long-term retention of reencountered memories.

Repeated encounter with encoded memories is often a fundamental component of long-term learning processes, however, the role of repeated access to encoded memories in long-term consolidation is yet to be clarified. Here we investigated whether the long-term retention of newly acquired associative memories is affected if one of the central areas of the attentional control network is stimulated before or after repeated access to acquired information. Non-clinical participants (undergraduate students, N = 118) were exposed to an associative verbal learning task. Following the initial learning of

Early development of neurophysiological processes involved in normal reading and reading disability: a magnetic source imaging study.

This longitudinal study examined the development of the brain mechanism involved in phonological decoding in beginning readers using magnetic source imaging. Kindergarten students were assigned to 2 groups: those who showed mastery of skills that are important predictors of proficient reading (low-risk group) and those who initially did not show mastery but later benefited from systematic reading instruction and developed average-range reading skills at the end of Grade 1 (high-risk responders). Spatiotemporal profiles of brain activity were obtained during performance of letter-sound and pseu

A model-based study of learning and memory following transient global amnesia attacks.

Verbal learning and forgetting were studied in patients one month after an episode of Transient Global Amnesia and in normal control subjects by means of a two-stage stochastic model, which allows independent measurements of encoding, storage and forgetting. We preliminarily ascertained both the necessity and the sufficiency of the model to account for several performance scores of the two experimental groups, and then compared the learning and forgetting functions between groups. In spite of the analytical power of the statistical method adopted. Transient Global Amnesia was not found to enta

Lexical processing in individuals with high-functioning autism and Asperger's disorder.

The presence or absence of clinically delayed language development prior to 3 years of age is a key, but contentious, clinical feature distinguishing autism from Asperger's disorder. The aim of this study was to examine language processing in children with high-functioning autism (HFA) and Asperger's disorder (AD) using a task which taps lexical processing, a core language ability. Eleven individuals with HFA, 11 with AD and 11 typically developing (TD) individuals completed a masked priming task, a psycholinguistic paradigm that directly examines lexical processes. Within-group analyses revea

Combining neuropsychological and structural neuroimaging indicators of conversion to Alzheimer's disease in amnestic mild cognitive impairment.

Morphometric and neuropsychological retrospective studies of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI) have demonstrated that regional atrophies and cognitive impairments may differentiate stable from progressing MCI. No measure has proved helpful prospectively. In this study, twenty five amnestic MCI patients and 25 healthy controls underwent structural MRI and comprehensive neuropsychological assessment. The groups' grey matter volumes were compared with voxel based morphometry and were also correlated with scores obtained on paired associates learning and category fluency tasks. MCI patients
