Necrotizing sialometaplasia. Report of a case.

Necrotizing sialometaplasia occurred in a 46-year-old woman. This is an uncommon benign disease that typically begins with an ulcerated lesion on the hard palate and surrounding tissues. Clinical and microscopic findings show obvious similarity with a malignant neoplasm. Necrotizing sialometapiasis is a benign minor salivary gland disease. It is important since it may easily be confused with squamous cell carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma.

Primary maxillary chondrosarcoma: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Sarcomas of the head and neck region are rare tumors, constituting less than 1% of malignant neoplasms in this area, of which few cases (20%) originate from bone or cartilage. Chondrosarcoma is a malignant neoplasm that develops in bone, with a predilection for the pelvis, chest wall, and scapula, and is uncommon in the maxilla and jaw. Although this type of lesion has locally aggressive behavior, destroying the affected bone, it can metastasize when it is not diagnosed early and compromise the patient's life. CASE SUMMARY: On intraoral examination of a 32-year-old female with a t

Pleomorphic adenoma: a rare intraoral pediatric tumor.

Minor salivary gland tumors are rare in the pediatric population. The most common minor salivary gland neoplasm is pleomorphic adenoma of the hard palate. We report a case of a 7-year-old patient presenting with a slow-growing palatal lesion, which upon diagnosis we confirm to be a pleomorphic adenoma. These lesions require radical excision with careful dissection due to risks of malignant transformation, pain, interference with dentition, and tumor seeding. Given the risk of recurrence, it is important that these patients be monitored long term following extirpation. Our patient remains recur

Oral teratoma: a case report and literature review.

Teratomas are true neoplasms composed of tissues from all three germinal layers. They have an unknown origin and eccentric microscopic appearance. Teratomas arising from the oral cavity are rare in the newborn; only 13 cases have been reported in the literature. We describe a male neonate with an oral teratoma originating from the anterior hard palate that was successfully treated with surgery.

[Transplants from the hard palate: method for mucosal graft reconstruction of the upper eyelid].

BACKGROUND: Mucosal grafts from the hard palate for reconstruction of the posterior lamella of the upper eyelid were compared for three different indications. The plastic reconstruction of the upper eyelid was carried out in patients with symblepharon and upper eyelid entropion following an autoimmune disease, in patients with subtotal or total upper eyelid resection due to a neoplasm and in patients with mucous membrane trauma using autogenous mucosal grafts from the hard palate. PATIENTS: In this retrospective comparative interventional case series 23 eyes from 19 patients were included in

Necrotizing sialometaplasia can hide the presence of salivary gland tumors: A case series.

OBJECTIVE: Necrotizing sialometaplasia (NS) is an uncommon benign process which affects minor and, more rarely, major salivary glands. While self-limiting, the condition might be clinically and histologically mistaken for malignancy. Furthermore, NS may accompany neoplasms. The aim of this paper was to report a series of Italian patients affected by NS associated with an unusual high presence of neoplasms of minor and major salivary glands. STUDY DESIGN: Clinical and histological features of twelve patients with NS were retrospectively evaluated. RESULTS: Eight patients presented NS of the m

Carcinoma of the soft palate and uvula.

Carcinoma of the soft palate and uvula is a rare form of oropharyngeal neoplasm with incidence ranging from 5% to 12% of all oropharyngeal carcinomas. The lesions are more commonly found in men in the sixth and seventh decade of life. Because of the high incidence of potential velopharyngeal incompetence, surgical resections are usually reserved for the lesions confined to the uvula, where larger lesions are treated with radiation therapy.

Paraneoplastic dermatomyositis with atypical features associated with a solid pseudopapillary pancreatic neoplasm.

Dermatomyositis (DM) is an autoimmune inflammatory myopathy that may occur as a paraneoplastic syndrome, most commonly associated with ovarian, lung, and gastrointestinal malignancies. Solid pseudopapillary pancreatic tumor is a rare neoplasm with low malignant potential, and to our knowledge only one case has previously been reported in association with DM. We present the case of a 21-year-old woman with six months of proximal muscle weakness, dysphagia, and cutaneous lesions characteristic of DM, including a heliotrope rash, shawl sign, and V-sign. She also exhibited atypical features, such

Benign myoepithelioma of the soft palate: an unusual clinical entity.

Myoepitheliomas are rare benign tumours that affect the exocrine glands and are sporadically located in the salivary glands. The most common location of myoepithelioma in the oral cavity is the parotid gland and it is seldom encountered in the palate. The diagnosis of this entity is challenging since its clinical presentation may resemble those of more common neoplasms, rendering a complex histopathological diagnosis. The aim of the present case report is to describe an unusual case of myoepithelioma of the soft palate in a male patient, which developed as an asymptomatic, slowly growing mass.

Surgical management of necrotizing sialometaplasia of palate.

Necrotizing sialometaplasia (NSM) is a rare benign, inflammatory disease of both major and minor salivary glands, although more commonly reported in the minor glands of the palate. The characteristic clinical presentation can perplex the clinician and may be mistaken for a malignant neoplasm, such as mucoepidermoid carcinoma, as well as invasive squamous cell carcinoma. The clinical and histological similarity between this entity and a malignant lesion may result in unnecessary or mis-treatment. Though clinically mimics malignancy, NSM is considered to be a self-limiting disease, and takes abo

Histiocytic sarcoma: a study of five cases including the histiocyte marker CD163.

Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a rare but controversial hematopoietic neoplasm. In the past, malignancies have been misclassified as histiocytic tumors due to overlapping histologic features and inadequate phenotypic data. CD163, a recently characterized hemoglobin scavenger receptor, appears to be a 'specific' marker of histiocytic lineage and a promising diagnostic tool for evaluating histiocytic neoplasms. Five cases of HS were studied to further elucidate the clinicopathologic features of these rare tumors and to demonstrate the diagnostic utility of CD163. Criteria for diagnosis included his

Oncocytic carcinoma of the maxillary sinus: a rare neoplasm.

Oncocytic neoplasms are tumors composed of oncocytes (i.e., epithelial cells with a large cytoplasm that is rich in mitochondria). Most cases are benign and originate from the major salivary glands, while the minor salivary glands are rarely involved. Occurrence of oncocytic carcinoma (or malignant oncocytoma) within the sinonasal tract is an unusual event. We report a rare case of maxillary sinus oncocytic carcinoma occurring in a 45-year-old male. Biopsy was consistent with an unspecified salivary gland neoplasm. The patient underwent total maxillectomy through a lateral rhinotomic approach;

Diagnosis of Tooth Agenesis in Childhood and Risk for Neoplasms in Adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Tooth agenesis, the congenital absence of one or more teeth, can be diagnosed in children in the first decade of life. Tooth agenesis is a phenotypic feature of conditions such as ectodermal dysplasia, cleft lip, cleft palate, Down syndrome, and Van der Woude syndrome. Tooth agenesis can also be nonsyndromic. Studies have shown an association between the genetic determinants of nonsyndromic tooth agenesis and neoplasms in adulthood. METHODS: This review of the implications of tooth agenesis as a risk indicator for neoplasms in adulthood is based on a search of PubMed to identify p

[Rare case of palatal amyloidosis].

Amyloidosis first described by Karl Rokitansky in 1842 consists in accumulation of pathological protein (amyloid) within both cells and extracellular space. It usually develops in the course of a chronic inflammation or some neoplasms. The clinical picture depends on the impairment degree of an organ in which amyloid accumulates. The diagnosis is based on the cytological examination of the material collected by means of biopsy of the subcutaneous fatty tissue and of the mucosa of the anal orifice, gums, kidneys or liver etc. In the presented study a rare case of amyloidal concrements localised

Clear Cell Myoepithelial Carcinoma Arising from the Hard Palate with Metastasis to the Lungs.

Myoepithelial carcinoma is an uncommon tumor of the salivary glands, most commonly the parotid gland. Clear cell myoepithelial carcinoma is a rare variant with an aggressive behavior. Here, we describe a case of clear cell myoepithelial carcinoma arising from the hard palate in an elderly male who underwent resection of the tumor and postop radiation. Posttreatment imaging demonstrated bilateral pulmonary nodules and a C2 body lesion concerning for metastasis. Biopsy of the lung lesions revealed a monomorphous population of optically clear cells with hyperchromatic and pleomorphic nuclei which

Neuroblastoma in early childhood: A rare case report and review of literature.

Neuroblastoma is an extremely rare pediatric neoplasm whose prognosis becomes poor and poor as the age advances. It can be sporadic or nonfamilial in origin. It is primarily a tumor of abdominal origin from where it metastasis to lymph nodes, liver, intracranial and orbital sites, and central nervous system. There is no standard dental treatment protocol for the management of neuroblastoma due to its poor survival rate and rarity. However, dental treatment may follow the protocol of preventive and restorative. Surgicals should be performed under supervision as it may trigger metastasis. We rep

Myoepithelioma of the head and neck: case report and review.

The clinical, light, and ultrastructure features of a myoepithelioma occurring on the hard palate of a 24-year-old woman are presented and compared with 41 myoepithelioma of the head and neck described in the English literature. These 42 tumors (39 benign and 3 malignant) occurred in individuals from 14 to 81 years of age, affected both sexes about equally, and most often presented as a slowly enlarging, asymptomatic mass. The parotid gland and palate were the most common sites of occurrence. The tumors are typically circumscribed and encapsulated, vary from 1 to 5 cm in the greatest dimension

[Abrikosoff's tumor of the soft palate. A case report].

Abrikossoff's tumor or granular cell tumor is an infrequent benign neoplasm, accurately described by Abrikossoff in 1926. We report the case of a young man, 19-year-old, affected with an Abrikossoff's tumor, sitting on the soft palate. After the timely perusal of the subject, we emphasize the peculiarity of the palatine localisation as well the importance of anatomical pathology in order to get a correct diagnosis of these neoformations of soft's parts.
