First isolation of Leptospira noguchii serogroups Panama and Autumnalis from cattle.

Prevention and control of leptospirosis are based on the knowledge of locally circulating strains. Thus, efforts to obtain local isolates are paramount to the epidemiological understanding of leptospirosis. We report and discuss here the first isolation of members of serogroups Autumnalis and Panama from cattle, both belonging to Leptospira noguchii species. Urine samples (n = 167) were collected directly by puncture of the bladder from randomly selected cows from a slaughterhouse in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for bacteriological culture. Isolates were characterized by serogrouping and sequencing

High clustering rates of multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis genotypes in Panama.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis continues to be one of the leading causes of death worldwide and in the American region. Although multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) remains a threat to TB control in Panama, few studies have focused in typing MDR-TB strains. The aim of our study was to characterize MDR Mycobacterium tuberculosis clinical isolates using PCR-based genetic markers. METHODS: From 2002 to 2004, a total of 231 Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates from TB cases country-wide were screened for antibiotic resistance, and MDR-TB isolates were further genotyped by double repetitive element

Human T-cell leukemia virus-I and hematologic malignancies in Panama.

Serum samples were obtained in a 2-year period (November 1, 1984-December 31, 1986) from 136 Panamanian patients with hematologic malignancies identified by a population-based registry designed for studies investigating human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV)-I. Only three patients had clinical and serologic findings of HTLV-I-associated adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL). The authors conclude that although classical HTLV-I-associated ATLL occurs in the Panamanian population, it is not as prevalent as in other Caribbean populations.

Chromoblastomycosis caused by Chaetomium funicola: a case report from Western Panama.

Little is known about opportunistic fungi causing skin lesions in tropical countries such as Panama. We report an 83-year-old man from Chiriquí, Western Panama, with crusted skin lesions covering tumorous masses resembling Bowen's disease of the skin on the dorsum of his right hand. Fungal cultures were obtained on different nutrient media from disinfected superficial skin scrapings and fragments taken from a deep skin biopsy. Deep skin biopsy showed the presence of globose, dark fungal cells in the upper and lower dermis, sometimes in abscesses or giant cells, indicating chromoblastomycosis.

Contact dermatitis caused by pesticides among banana plantation workers in Panama.

To characterize dermatitis related to pesticide exposures among banana plantation workers in Panama, the authors studied 281 workers seen at The Occupational Health Department of the Social Security Hospital of Changuinola and Puerto Armuelles between 1988-1992 and in 1993. Exposure data were collected through a standardized occupational health history. Physical examination, a standard patch test, and a pesticide patch test (PPT) were carried out. Of the 244 men (86.8%) and 37 women (13.2%), 17 and 37, respectively, were packing station workers. The other 227 men were field workers, exposed to

Ascaris lumbricoides infection in pre-school children from Chiriqui Province, Panama.

An epidemiological survey of intestinal parasitic infections was conducted in a sample of 203 children aged 3-5 years from a semi-urban and a rural community in Chiriqui, Panama, in 1983-4. On the basis of stool examinations, the prevalences of Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, hookworm, Giardia intestinalis, Entamoeba spp. and Strongyloides stercoralis were found to be 27, 34, 14, 15, 5 and 4% respectively. The results from children from the two communities were compared. Polyparasitism occurred significantly more often in rural than semi-urban children. Following anthelmintic treatm

Culex (Melanoconion) aikenii: natural vector in Panama of endemic Venezuelan encephalitis.

Experiments performed in an endemic area of Venezuelan equine encephalitis in the Panama Canal Zone demonstrated transmission of Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus from naturally infected Culex aikenii mosquitoes to laboratory hamsters. Results of experiments indicate that Culex aikenii is an efficient natural vector and the principal species of mosquito transmitting Venezuelan equine encephalitis in this endemic zone.

The species of the genus Centruroides Marx, 1890 (Scorpiones: Buthidae) from Panama.

This review examines the taxonomy, distribution, natural history and scorpionism of the Centruroides species (Scorpiones: Buthidae) of Panama. A taxonomic key is provided to easily identify the five confirmed species from Panama, but also including Centruroides edwardsii (Gervais, 1843) and Centruroides gracilis (Latreille, 1804). The recently reported first record of C. edwardsii in Panama seems to be based on misidentified specimens that belong to Centruroides granosus (Thorell, 1876), a Panamanian endemic species, or Centruroides margaritatus (Gervais, 1841), an introduced synanthropic spec

Histopathological characteristics of cutaneous lesions caused by Leishmania Viannia panamensis in Panama.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is an endemic disease in the Republic of Panama, caused by Leishmania (Viannia) parasites, whose most common clinical manifestation is the presence of ulcerated lesions on the skin. These lesions usually present a chronic inflammatory reaction, sometimes granulomatous, with the presence of lymphocytes, plasma cells and macrophages. This study describes the histopathological characteristics found in the skin lesions of patients with CL caused by Leishmania (V.) panamensis in Panama. We analyzed 49 skin biopsy samples from patients with clinical suspicion of CL, by m

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in domestic pets from metropolitan regions of Panama.

Toxoplasmosis is a worldwide zoonotic disease but information regarding domestic animals in Central America is scarce and fragmented. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in domestic cats and dogs in different metropolitan regions of Panama. A total of 576 samples were collected; sera from 120 cats and 456 dogs were tested using a commercial indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The overall seroprevalence of IgG antibodies was 30.73%. There is high seroprevalence of T. gondii in cats and dogs in the metropolitan regions around the Panama

Chikungunya virus infection: first detection of imported and autochthonous cases in Panama.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-borne pathogen that was only endemic in Africa and south Asia until 2005 and 2006, when the virus spread into the Indian Ocean islands, Europe, and Asia. Autochthonous CHIKV transmission in the Caribbean islands was reported in December of 2013. In Panama, two febrile cases were detected in May of 2014: one traveling from Haiti, and the other traveling from the Dominican Republic. After other imported cases were detected, the first autochthonous case was reported in August of the same year. We detected CHIKV viral RNA and isolated the virus from serum sa

A survey of intestinal parasites including associated risk factors in humans in Panama.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitic infections are among the most common infections worldwide, leading to illness with serious and long lasting implications in children and immunocompromised people. Transmission of intestinal parasites is more frequent in tropical and sub-tropical areas where sanitation is poor and socioeconomic conditions are deficient. Panama is a country where climate and social conditions could be reflected in a high number of people infected with intestinal parasites. The presence, prevalence, and distribution of intestinal parasites in this country have been approached to d

Cervical dysplasias 1982-2010 in the Republic of Panama. Diagnosis, treatment, and evolution.

The aim of this work was to demonstrate the effectiveness of colposcopic diagnosis and conservative local treatments in cases of dysplasia after colpo-cytology and directed biopsy. The main treatments applied were cryosurgery and cauterization. The association of dysplasia and human papillomavirus (HPV) showed an increase of 96% in recent years. The local destructive treatments (TLC), in addition to destroy the virus, have also successfully activated the local immunological system mechanism against HPV. The evidence of such affirmation is based on the obtained results that are: 76% cured, 11%

Talaromyces indigoticus Takada & Udagawa, the first record for Panama and the American continent.

In a survey of mycotic human skin and nail lesions in Chiriquí, Western Panama, Talaromyces indigoticus was isolated in one case. This ascomycete is characterised by formation of gymnothecia containing oval, spinose and yellow ascospores, which become blue in mounting fluids, and by short monoverticillate or biverticillate penicilli. It is here reported the first time for Panama and the American continent. Because the strain was isolated from an onychomycosis together with a dermatophyte and other fungal strains, the pathological impact of Talaromyces indigoticus is not evident.
