Anti-ulcer activity and mode of action of the polysaccharide fraction from the leaves of Panax ginseng.

The effects of a weakly acidic polysaccharide fraction, GL-4, from the leaves of Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer on various experimental gastric ulcer models in mice and rats have been studied. Oral administration of GL-4 at doses of 50 to 200 mg/kg inhibited the formation of the gastric lesions induced by necrotizing agents such as HCl/ethanol and ethanol in a dose-dependent manner. This protective effect was observed not only upon oral but also upon subcutaneous administration of GL-4 (50-100 mg/kg). GL-4 also inhibited the formation of gastric ulcers which were induced by water immersion stress,

New endophytic species of Hypocreales (Sordariomycetes, Ascomycota) from the medicinal plant Panax notoginseng in China.

Panax notoginseng is a famous medicinal plant in China. Under forest-based ecological cultivation, its roots harbor a diverse assemblage of endophytic fungi with unique community structures. Some of these fungi can enhance host resistance to diseases and environmental stresses, promote plant growth, and may influence the biosynthesis of medicinal saponins, thereby contributing to host fitness and metabolite regulation. In this study, a total of 188 endophytic fungal isolates were obtained from the roots of P. notoginseng cultivated under a forest-based ecological system in Yunnan Province, Chi

Identification of (20R)-protopanaxadiol from Panax ginseng as a novel anti-SARS-CoV-2 compound.

COVID-19 remains a global health concern, yet current antivirals are restricted to high-risk patients and face issues of resistance. To establish a safer evaluation system, we constructed a noninfectious SARS-CoV-2 replicon using a BAC vector driven by the CMV promoter. Among the tested cell lines, HuH-7.6c supported the most efficient replication. Replication was inhibited by remdesivir, nirmatrelvir, and molnupiravir, but not by favipiravir or AT-527. A screening of 373 food-derived compounds identified (20R)-protopanaxadiol (PPD), a ginseng metabolite, as a novel inhibitor. Together, this w

Panax notoginseng saponins enhance osteogenesis-angiogenesis coupling to ameliorate osteoporosis combined with intervertebral disc degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis (OP) combined with Intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) is a chronic degenerative disease. There are no drugs that simultaneously treat both IDD and OP. Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS) can treat OP or ameliorate IDD, respectively, indicating its potential for simultaneous treatment of both conditions. The specific biological mechanism by which PNS treats OP combined with IDD and the key bioactive compounds involved require further investigation. METHODS: The effects of oral administration of PNS on OP and IDD were evaluated in mice using micro-CT scanning and immun

Panaxydol extracted from Panax ginseng inhibits NLRP3 inflammasome activation to ameliorate NASH-induced liver injury.

Activation of NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome exacerbates liver inflammation and fibrosis in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), suggesting that development of inflammasome inhibitor can become leading candidate to ameliorate NASH. Panax ginseng (P. ginseng) contains numerous bioactive natural components to reduce inflammation. This study aims to identify inhibitory components of P. ginseng for NLRP3 inflammasome activation. We separated polar and non-polar fractions of P. ginseng and tested modulation of NLRP3 inflammasome, and then identified pure component for inflammasome

Crater-Spectrum Feature Fusion Method for Panax notoginseng Cadmium Detection Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy.

Panax notoginseng (P. notoginseng) is a valuable herbal medicine, as well as a dietary food supplement known for its satisfactory clinical efficacy in alleviating blood stasis, reducing swelling, and relieving pain. However, the ability of P. notoginseng to absorb and accumulate cadmium (Cd) poses a significant environmental pollution risk and potential health hazards to humans. In this study, we employed laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for the rapid detection of Cd. It is important to note that signal uncertainty can impact the quantification performance of LIBS. Hence, we propose

Panax notoginseng saponins and acetylsalicylic acid co-delivered liposomes for targeted treatment of ischemic stroke.

In this study, we aimed to develop brain-targeted co-delivery liposomes for the concurrent delivery of Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS) and acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) for the treatment of ischemic stroke. Within this system, PNS served as a cholesterol substitute, integrating into the phospholipid bilayer of the liposomes, while ASA was encapsulated internally. A poly-2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (PMPC) polymer was synthesized and incorporated into the liposome surface. This formulation demonstrated an enhanced PNS-loading capacity and facilitated the synchronized delivery of key s

Cucumber mosaic virus impairs the physiological homeostasis of Panax notoginseng and induces saponin-mediated resistance.

As an important medicinal plant, Panax notoginseng often suffers from various abiotic and biotic stresses during its growth, such as drought, heavy metals, fungi, bacteria and viruses. In this study, the symptom and physiological parameters of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV)-infected P. notoginseng were analyzed and the RNA-seq was performed. The results showed that CMV infection affected the photosynthesis of P. notoginseng, caused serious oxidative damage to P. notoginseng and increased the activity of several antioxidant enzymes. Results of transcriptome analysis and corresponding verification

Cardioprotection of Panax Notoginseng saponins against acute myocardial infarction and heart failure through inducing autophagy.

Morbidity and mortality from acute myocardial infarction (AMI) remains substantial although interventional coronary reperfusion strategies are widely use and successful. MI remains the most common cause of heart failure (HF) worldwide. Here we demonstrated that Panax Notoginseng saponins (PNS), the extract of Panax notoginseng, exerts cardioprotective effect in AMI and the underlying mechanism refers to inducing cardiomyocyte autophagy, antiplatelet aggregation, enhancing endothelial migration and angiogenesis. PNS was initially tested to rescue the myocardial infarct size and cardiac function

Unveiling the improvement mechanisms of moist-heat and hot-air treatments on the flavor of Panax quinquefolius.

China-grown American ginseng, namely Panax quinquefolius (PQ), faces significant limitations in food industry applications due to its undesirable flavor. Moist-heat and hot-air treatments (MHHA) are one of the main methods for processing PQ. However, its impact on both flavor and functional components of PQ remained unclear. To address this issue, we proposed a three-step strategy termed "HE + H + EH", comprising the integration of human sensory evaluation and electronic tongue (HE), HPLC‑Q‑TOF‑MS (H), and the integration of electronic nose and HS‑GC‑IMS (EH). Human sensory evaluation and elec

From raw to steamed Panax notoginseng: A systematic review of saponin transformations and their functional consequences.

BACKGROUND: Notoginseng Radix et Rhizoma (NRR), derived from Panax notoginseng, serves as both a functional food and a key medicinal material in traditional Chinese medicine. Its bioactivity is largely attributed to saponins, which undergo significant chemical transformations during processing (e.g., steaming), altering its pharmacological profile. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to systematically consolidate experimentally verified metabolites from authenticated NRR, elucidate the chemical transformations induced by processing and clarify the resulting shift in pharmacological effects, thereby p

Divergent pathogenic strategies of Fusarium species in Panax notoginseng and biocontrol by a Bacillus-Serratia consortium.

Fusarium-induced root rot severely constrains Panax notoginseng cultivation, yet the differential pathogenicity and ecological interactions among coexisting Fusarium species remain poorly understood. By isolating three pathogenic isolates—Fusarium oxysporum LP1 and F. solani LP2/LP3—we uncovered a distinct ecological trade-off: F. oxysporum exhibits higher niche occupancy, whereas F. solani demonstrates markedly greater virulence. To manage this disease, we engineered the Bacillus subtilis-Serratia marcescens synthetic microbial consortium (BS) comprising antagonistic strains XY-6 and XB-7. Preparation and evaluation of lecithin/zein hybrid nanoparticles for the oral delivery of Panax notoginseng saponins.

Panax Notoginseng Saponins (PNS) has been widely used in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction, heart failure and cerebral infarction. However, oral administration of PNS showed low bioavailability because of its instability and poor membrane permeability in the gastrointestinal tract. Here, lipoprotein-inspired hybrid nanoparticles of PNS-Lecithin-Zein (PLZ-NPs) were prepared by using a simple phase separation method, which possessed a core-shell structure, where zein was used as protein part to replace the animal origin prot

Panax ginseng is superior to vitamin E as a hepatoprotector against cyclophosphamide-induced liver damage.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cyclophosphamide (CPh) is a frequently used drug, in human and animals for its immunosuppressive and anticancer potential. However, it is metabolized by the liver yielding damaging toxicants (to the liver itself and other non-target vital organs) via oxidative stress, apoptosis induction and finally necrosis. Since there is no escaping of using such harmful medications, we focused on alleviating its side-effects. Panax ginseng Meyer is a potent candidate, and we still lack adequate information on its hepatoprotective role against cyclophosphamide-induced liver-damage. MET
