We studied two patients, a 43-year-old Hispanic man with a one-year history of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and a 34-year-old Hispanic man with newly diagnosed AIDS. Both had necrotizing retinitis that progressed to panophthalmitis and orbital cellulitis. Toxoplasmosis was not diagnosed in the first patient early in the course of the disease. The second patient had a history of toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis. Despite anti-toxoplasmosis therapy, visual acuity deteriorated to no light perception in both patients. Diagnostic biopsy of the eye wall was performed on the first patient an

This study aimed to identify the prevalence and risk factors for globe removal among patients with open-globe injuries (OGIs) in agricultural regions. A retrospective chart review of patients with OGIs was performed between January 2010 and December 2019. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify the factors associated with globe removal in OGI. This study included 422 patients (422 eyes). The highest prevalence of OGI was observed in the middle age group (> 20 to 40 years). The most common cause of OGIs was agriculture-related injury (54.7%), followed by i

A consecutive series of 450 eyes enucleated because of a malignant melanoma of the choroid or ciliary body was reviewed in an effort to establish the incidence of ocular inflammation or intraocular hemorrhage as the initial clinical manifestation. Thirty-five patients had these clinical signs initially. Twenty-two (4.9%) initially had ocular inflammations. Eight of these had an episcleritis, and the remaining 14 had some form of uveitis, endophthalmitis, or panophthalmitis. Five of those with episcleritis had tumors in the ciliary body, and all six patients who developed panophthalmitis had ne

The incidence and geographic distribution of dengue has increased dramatically in recent years across various parts of the world. Previously, ocular findings in dengue fever were considered rare. We report a spectrum of ocular manifestations presenting with vision loss in the last dengue epidemic in an eastern state of India. This is a retrospective interventional case series of patients with vision loss who were diagnosed with dengue eye disease in the 2022 epidemic. Systemic and ophthalmic examinations were completed on all patients and were analyzed. Fifteen patients had presented with visi

This is a study profile of the patients undergoing destructive surgery in Nepal Eye Hospital over a period of 2 years (2001-2003). The rationale of the study was to know the incidence and causes for destructive surgery (enucleation/evisceration) and the measures to prevent them. Patients admitted in the ward from emergency and outpatients departments for the purpose of enucleation and evisceration were taken into this study. Their visual acuity, slit-lamp examinations, fundus evaluation were done. Most of the patients had no perception of light with painful blind eyes, panophthalmitis, endopht

A patient with penetrating wound of the eye is described, whose wound has been contaminated with anaerobic infection. Clinical picture of anaerobic panophthalmitis has been rather typical, with the infection penetrating into soft tissues of the orbit. Evisceration of the eyeball was performed. Multiple-modality treatment was carried out. The infectious process has not progressed beyond the orbit. The diagnosis has been confirmed bacteriologically.

To determine the trend in frequency and clinical indications of surgical removal of eyes in a tertiary eye centre in Calabar, Nigeria. This is a 10-year retrospective review of patients who underwent surgical removal of eyes in a tertiary centre. The clinical records were reviewed (between Jan 2001 and Dec 2010) for demographic data, type of surgery, and clinical indications. A total of 137 eyes were surgically removed within the study period. Of these 46 were children (<16 years). There were 85 males and 52 females giving a M:F ratio of 1.6:1. Clinical indications for surgical eye removal inc

Episcleritis is synonymous with episclerokeratitis although the latter is most appropriate as the cornea is often affected as well as the episclera. Episcleritis is a superficial ocular disease characterized by inflammation of the episclera and conjunctiva. It responds most commonly to topical antinflammatory medications. In contrast scleritis is a granulomatous fulminant panophthalmitis that will progress rapidly and induce significant intraocular disease including glaucoma and exudative retinal detachments without systemic immune suppressive therapy.

A patient with 75 per cent of the body surface area burned developed metastatic endophthalmitis with orbital cellulitis leading to panophthalmitis in the right eye. In an estimated 1700 patients with burns treated in the same hospital over a period of 9 years (1984 to 1993), this is the first patient developing metastatic endophthalmitis. A possible pathological basis for the sequence of events is discussed.

This report presents the case of a 20-year-old female who presented with features of right panophthalmitis with secondary orbital cellulitis masquerading as an orbital tumour. This presented a diagnostic difficulty to several ophthalmologists. An orbital ultrasound scan revealed an underlying orbital mass, which on histology was discovered to be a well differentiated invasive large cell keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma. This report further emphasizes the value of ultrasound scan in detecting orbital tumours.

Tick-transmitted borreliosis is by no means a rare infectious disease. It is found especially in southern parts of Germany. Eyes are seldom affected. The disease can lead to nerve palsy of the eye muscles. One case of panophthalmitis and one of optic disk edema have been described. The authors found a bilateral palsy of the abducens nerve in one patient with tick-transmitted borreliosis. Motility normalized under therapy with highly-dosed penicillin.
