[Clinical studies on inverted papilloma of the urinary tract].

BACKGROUND: Inverted papilloma of the urinary tract is believed to be a benign neoplasm based on its histologic morphology and clinical behavior. In recent years, however, several investigators have warned against too optimistic an approach, emphasizing the possibility of malignant cellular transformation within the lesion, or its eventual association with other urothelial tumors such as transitional cell carcinoma or carcinoma in situ. We here report on 35 clinicopathologically diagnosed cases of inverted papilloma, and present the clinical significance attributed to these lesions in view of

[Inverted papilloma of the renal pelvis: report of a case].

Inverted papilloma of the upper urinary tract is a rare lesion. To our knowledge, we report here the 32nd case of inverted papilloma of the renal pelvis. A 50-year-old man presented with asymptomatic gross hematria. Excretory urography showed a filling defect in the left upper calyx. Computerized tomography showed a poorly enhanced low-density area within the renal pelvis. Since radiographic findings suggested a renal pelvic tumor, the patient underwent total nephroureterectomy. Unexpectedly, a 3 x 2.5 cm polypoid tumor of the renal pelvis was consistent with inverted papilloma. Since this ben

[Inverted papilloma of the ureter. Review and treatment criteria].

We report a case of inverted papilloma of the ureter, a rare disease entity. To our knowledge, this makes the 22nd case reported in the literature. Patient anatomopathologic work up included electron microscopy and immunohistochemical methods. This condition is compared to urothelial tumours of the ureter and we discuss the therapeutic approach. Correct treatment is by tumor excision including its base by segmental resection of the ureter and end-to-end ureterorrhaphy or ureterocystoneostomy in tumors of the lower third. A case submitted to endoscopic resection with good clinical results has b

[A case of inverted papilloma of the ureter with malignant findings].

A 70-year-old female with inverted papilloma of the ureter is presented. She was hospitalized because of asymptomatic macrohematuria. Excretory urography and retrograde pyelography demonstrated a filling defect with smooth contour at the mid-portion of the right ureter. Abdominal computer tomographic (CT) scan showed mass lesion (CT number 41) at the same portion as the filling defect. She was diagnosed as having an ureteral tumor and right nephroureterectomy was performed. The gross specimen contained a 24 X 12 mm, polypoid, pedunculated and smooth-surfaced tumor. Pathological diagnosis was i

The inverted Schneiderian papilloma: a clinical and pathological study.

Inverted papillomas which arise from the lining membranes of the nose and paranasal sinuses are relatively unfamiliar lesions which have been reported in the literature under a variety of titles. The uncertainly surrounding their etiology, their relationship to nasal polyps and their malignant potential have resulted in an ill-defined clinical approach to their management. The designation Inverted Schneiderian Papilloma is suggested as an appropriate title that best conveys the qualities of inversion, location and distinctiveness of character. The characteristic microscopic feature is the incr

Inverted papilloma (Schneiderian papilloma) with involvement of the oral cavity: report of an unusual case.

Inverted Schneiderian papilloma (ISP) is a neoplasm of epithelial lining origin which arises in the respiratory mucosa that lines the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. The inverted Schneiderian papilloma frequently appears as a unilateral lesion in the nasal septum and extends secondarily to the nasal and paranasal sinuses. This paper reports an unusual case of this pathology with involvement of the oral cavity in a 61-year-old white man. Clinical evaluation revealed a vegetating mass in the alveolar ridge of the right maxilla that had been present for approximately 4 months. After radiograp

Inverted papillomas of the urinary tract. A case of multiple, recurring inverted papillomas of the renal pelvis, ureter and bladder associated with malignant change.

A case of multiple, recurring urothelial inverted papillomas is reported with localization in the bladder, ureter and renal pelvis. Association of several of these with areas of transitional cell tumours and final occurrence of pure transitional cell tumour of papillary and non-papillary type grade II, causes us to question the original concept of inverted papillomas as benign tumours and lean to the more recent concept of inverted papillomas representing precancerous lesions.

Sinonasal inverted papilloma associated with small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma: A case report and literature review of rare malignancies associated with inverted papilloma.

We report a rare case of sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) associated with small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (SNEC). To our knowledge, this is the first report to describe SNEC found during the treatment of sinonasal IP. Surgery and five cycles of cisplatin plus etoposide with concurrent intensity modulated radiation therapy were performed. Neither local recurrence nor distant metastasis was noted during 6 years of post-diagnostic follow-up. The prognosis of SNEC is very poor. Treatment planning for sinonasal IP should consider a possible association with this rare but aggressive malignancy,

Is intraoperative margin sampling necessary in inverted papilloma resection?

PURPOSE: To explore the association between intraoperative surgical margin sampling by the frozen sections and recurrence in inverted papilloma surgery. METHODS: A multicenter, retrospective study of patients who underwent attachment-oriented IP resection in four tertiary care medical centers with a minimal follow-up of 36 months. RESULTS: The study included 220 surgeries with a mean follow-up period of 49 months (range 36-204). The endoscopic approach was used in all but 4 cases; 73% of procedures were primary. Overall recurrence was 10.45% (n = 23). Squamous cell carcinoma was found in 5 c

Malignant transformation of nasal inverted papilloma into sarcomatoid carcinoma.

A 57 year-old, male presented with a chronic unilateral nasal obstruction and epistaxis. Intranasal endoscopy showed multiple polypoid lesions. The computed tomography exam revealed a heterogeneous mass that occupied the right nasal cavity with osteolysis of the middle and lower cone causing fluid retention of the right maxillary sinus. He underwent resection of these lesions. Pathological examination revealed malignant transformation of nasal inverted papilloma into sarcomatoid carcinoma. This case report highlights the importance of considering malignant transformation in the differential di

Intestinal Type Adenocarcinoma from Inverted Papilloma: A Rare Recurrence.

Inverted Papilloma (IP) is an uncommon and locally aggressive benign tumour of sinonasal region, which tends to recur after surgical resection. Most tumours are confined to the lateral nasal wall and sinuses, with maxillary sinus being most commonly affected and a male preponderance. It has a known association with in situ and invasive carcinomas with a <10% rate of malignant transformation. Most common association has been seen with squamous cell carcinoma and extremely rare association with adenocarcinoma and small cell carcinoma. A 36-year-old male presented with a left sided polypoidal nas

Imaging Features of Sinonasal Inverted Papilloma: A Pictorial Review.

Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are widely used for evaluation of patients with nasal masses, playing an integral role in their diagnosis and treatment. Inverted papilloma is a rare tumor of the sinonasal region that demonstrates characteristic imaging appearances. Preoperative diagnosis and precise tumor extent are essential for surgical planning as this tumor grows centrifugally and has high potential to recur following incomplete surgery. This pictorial review aims to illustrate the spectrum of imaging features of inverted papilloma and highlight the key features that are

Rhinosinusal Polyposis and Inverted Papilloma: A Morphometric Comparative Study.

Introduction Nasal obstruction is one of the main rhinologic complaints, and two diseases must be investigated as differential diagnosis: rhinosinusal polyposis and inverted papilloma. Using traditional methods, the differential diagnosis between these diseases may be difficult. The morphometric study may be a useful tool for differential diagnosis and to define prognosis. Objective Calculate the morphometric values of rhinosinusal polyposis and inverted papilloma and compare the average of variables obtained between the groups. Methods The nasal mucus of 10 patients who had surgery in the Dep

Clinical and histologic features of inverted papilloma-associated malignancy.

The objectives of the study were to analyze the clinical features of inverted papillomas (IP) associated with malignancy and to evaluate the correlation of tumor stage, survival and histolologic features. We conducted a retrospective review of 18 IP associated with malignancy patients. In addition, we compared histopathologic characteristics (tumor differentiation and malignant cell proportion) with clinical outcomes. Eleven of the tumors were present on the nasal cavity and 7 on the maxillary sinus. The rates of synchronous and metachronous malignancy were 10.1 and 1.1%, respectively. The dis

Ureteral inverted papilloma: laparoscopic distal ureterectomy and boari flap.

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of ureteral inverted papilloma (IP) with laparoscopic resolution. METHODS: We report the case of a 30-year-old male patient who consulted for asymptomatic hematuria with the radiological finding of a filling defect at the distal right ureter. Ureteroscopy biopsy was not diagnostic, so laparoscopic ureterectomy with a Boari flap technique was performed. The pathology report showed a ureteral inverted papilloma. CONCLUSION: Laparoscopic ureteral replacement by Boari flap is a safe surgical alternative for defects in the distal ureter with the advantages of a minimal

Endoscopic transnasal management of inverted papilloma involving frontal sinuses.

This presentation focuses on the challenges and practical issues faced each day by orphans of the HIV epidemic and the holistic care that can be provided, as they continue to grow from toddlerhood to adolescence and beyond. An HIV Research Trust Scholarship enabled me to spend quality time in a sub-Saharan African province worst hit by the HIV epidemic and to interact with local experts and learn from mutual clinical experience. It was an immensely useful exercise as the clinical spectra of the diseases are very similar to ours and they have ongoing active research programs very relevant to ou
