[Paraganglioma of the cauda equina].

We report on a case of paraganglioma of the cauda equina in a 48-year-old man. These slow-growing, mostly benign and encapsulated intradural-extramedullar tumours are clinically characterized by lumbago, paraesthesia and motor deficits as well as occasionally by incontinence. Paragangliomas of the cauda equina show monomorphous (main) cells arranged in a typical cell cluster pattern, demonstrating a lobular architecture and a fine net of connective tissue formed by so-called sustentacular cells; some tumours show focal ganglionic differentiation. Because of their morphological similarity to th

[Paraganglioma of the cauda equina].

The case of a 36 year old woman with a paraganglioma of the cauda equina was studied. This localization is rare and special emphasis is made concerning the peculiarities of presentation, aggravating factors of the clinical manifestations and neuroradiologic findings. A review of the 66 paragangliomas of the cauda equina published to date is carried out. This entity deals with a tumor in the adult, with slight male predominance and a clinical presentation not differing from that of other lesions occupying the space of the cauda equina. The most frequent initial symptom is low back pain with or

Management of cervical paragangliomas.

Two cases of vagal body tumours are reported for their surgical consequences of immediate post-operative airway obstruction in one case, and tachycardia hypotension and severe dysphagia requiring cricopharyngeal myotomy in another. An unusual case of carotid body tumour which had the same clinical picture was also reported for comparative surgical treatment. The surgical management of both tumours was reviewed and it was found that 28-43 per cent of carotid body tumour resection would have vascular operation while dissection of vagal body tumour usually did not. The angiographic diagnostic cri

Paraganglioma of the cauda equina.

A case of paraganglioma of the cauda equina is presented. Usually reported to be benign with good prognosis, the present patient had a somewhat different course. The behaviour of the tumour was unusual, with rapid recurrence seen within first month of surgery. The need for total surgical excision and role of adjuvant radiotherapy is highlighted.

Familial occurrence of paragangliomas.

The occurrence of paragangliomas in three members of the same family is reported. It concerned a left carotid body tumor in one patient, a left carotid body tumor in her older sister, and a concomitant jugulotympanic and vagal body tumor in their younger brother. The radiological diagnosis in these patients was based on the typical hypervascular character in specific locations both on angiography and computed tomography. The familial occurrence of these lesions should be kept in mind whenever a chemodectoma is found, even in the absence of clinical symptoms in the direct relatives of the patie

MR imaging of paragangliomas.

MR imaging of 15 paragangliomas in 10 patients was compared with CT of 13 of the lesions in eight patients. All lesions were confirmed with angiography. All lesions were detected by MR and CT with the exception of one small glomus tympanicum tumor that was seen only in retrospect with MR. CT better demonstrated subtle osseous changes of the skull base and the relation of the tumor to the middle ear structures. MR better demonstrated the relation of the tumor to the adjacent internal jugular vein and carotid artery. The paragangliomas had a characteristic MR appearance based on their vascularit

Paragangliomas of the head and neck.

Nonchromaffin paragangliomas of the head and neck are usually benign, slow-growing lesions arising from neural crest tissue. Although uncommon, these neoplasms should always be considered in the differential diagnosis of a neck mass. The diagnostic and therapeutic challenges posed by these lesions require continued clinical attention.

Nonfunctioning retroperitoneal paragangliomas.

Nonfunctioning paragangliomas of the retroperitoneum are extremely rare tumors. As of this report, 30 cases are known from published data. Characteristics of these tumors and diagnostic techniques are herein described. Approximately 20 percent of these lesions are considered malignant. Surgical resection is the treatment of choice once the diagnosis is made.

[Paraganglioma of the glomus caroticum].

Extra-adrenal paraganglioma (chemodectoma) is a rare tumor; the tumor of the carotid body is the most frequently observed chemodectoma. Histochemical analysis of the glomus cell shows catecholamine in all cases, but functional activity of those tumors is an exception. The diagnosis of carotid body tumor can be confirmed by carotid arteriography. Surgery is the treatment of choice. Malignant degeneration of chemodectoma has been observed in a few cases.

Laryngeal Paraganglioma-A Case Report.

Background and Objectives: Paragangliomas of the head and neck are rare neuroendocrine tumors originating from the paraganglia, which might be sympathetic or parasympathetic. Laryngeal paragangliomas are the rarest subtype of these tumors, with only 1.41% of all paragangliomas, arising from the supraglottic or subglottic paraganglia of the larynx. The vast majority of them are benign, but there are some cases in which they turn out to be malignant, and the only way to know with certainty the difference between them is when we identify distant metastases. The aim of this article is to share our

A retropancreatic celio-mesenteric paraganglioma.

Paragangliomas are extra-adrenal pheochromocytomas that arise from chromaffin cells in the sympathetic or parasympathetic neural paraganglia. Surgery remains the only curative treatment, although prominent vascularity can make excision difficult. We have recently encountered a patient with a retropancreatic celio-mesenteric paraganglioma unusually located between celiac trunk (CT) and superior mesenteric artery.

[Malignant paraganglioma mimicking multiple myeloma].

We here present a 33-year-old woman who was referred to our hospital with a complaint of back pain and was found to have elevated IgG and hypercalcemia, as well as osteolytic lesions of pelvis and spines. 18F-FDG-PET/CT scan revealed numerous uptakes in the bones. An examination of the bone marrow revealed increased plasma cells (10.2%). Despite clinical similarities to multiple myeloma, any evidence of plasma cell clonal proliferation, including serum M-protein and light chain restriction, was not found. A reexamination of the bone marrow with a biopsy revealed the proliferation of abnormal c

Imaging manifestations of bladder paraganglioma.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the imaging findings of bladder paraganglioma (BPG) and improve the imaging recognition and diagnostic accuracy of the disease. METHODS: The clinical and imaging data of 10 cases of BPG confirmed by operation and pathology were retrospectively analyzed from the aspects of tumor location, size and morphology, presence or absence of necrosis, cystic change and calcification, and enhancement methods. RESULTS: Of the 10 cases, 7 cases underwent basal and contrast enhanced computed tomography (CT) scan examination, 1 case underwent basal and contrast enhanced MRI scan e

Locally invasive giant spinal paraganglioma.

Cauda equina paragangliomas are neuroendocrine tumours rarely encountered in neurosurgical practice. Large cauda equina paragangliomas with an intradural and extradural component, dense adhesion to nerve roots and high vascularity are surgically challenging and mandate meticulous operative dissection. The presence of extensive bony erosion can lead to spinal instability requiring solid instrumentation and fixation. We recommend resection of large cauda equina paragangliomas in a staged fashion with the aim of gross total resection and spinal stabilisation.

Pancreatic Paraganglioma: A Case Report.

Background: Paraganglionic neoplasms that originate in the adrenal medullas are referred to as pheochromocytomas, but if they arise from other paraganglia scattered throughout the body, they are referred to as paragangliomas. Pancreatic paragangliomas are an extremely rare entity as only 20 cases have been reported in the literature. They tend to be nonfunctional and typically occur in the fourth to fifth decade of life without a gender predilection. We describe in this study a case of a pancreatic paraganglioma and its CT appearance. Case Presentation: A 62-year-old woman undergoing presurgic
