Increased incarceration rates drive growing tuberculosis burden in prisons and jeopardize overall tuberculosis control in Paraguay.

Incarcerated populations are at high-risk to develop tuberculosis (TB), however their impact on the population-level tuberculosis epidemic has been scarcely studied. We aimed to describe the burden and trends of TB among incarcerated populations over time in Paraguay, its clinical and epidemiological differences and the population attributable fraction. This is an observational, descriptive study including all TB cases notified to the National TB control Program in Paraguay during the period 2009-2018. We also used case registries of prisoners diagnosed with tuberculosis from the Minister of J

A first comprehensive picture of the mental health issues of female prisoners in Paraguay: Prevalence and associated factors.

This is the first study to examine mental health issues, substance use, and suicide risk among incarcerated women in Paraguay, aiming to identify factors associated with these conditions, such as age and medical history. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 215 incarcerated women. Participants were assessed using the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) to evaluate mental health symptoms, Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) for suicide risk, and MULTICAGE CAD-4 to measure alcohol and drug addiction. The chi-square test and odds ratios were applied to identify associations be

Contrasting roles of farm categories in the enzootic circulation of bovine brucellosis through cattle trade in Paraguay.

Bovine brucellosis leads to significant economic losses in enzootic regions due to infertility, abortion, weak calves, and reduced milk and meat production. In humans, this zoonotic disease often results in a chronic, debilitating illness. In Paraguay, where cattle farming is an important sector of the economy, bovine brucellosis remains enzootic all over the country. We developed a within- and between-farm stochastic model to assess the potential of the female trade network in sustaining country-wide transmission of bovine brucellosis and to identify the roles of different farm categories in

Bacillus of Calmette and Guérin (BCG) and the risk of leprosy in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, 2016-2017.

OBJECTIVES: Paraguay has experienced a 35% reduction in the detected incidence of leprosy during the last ten years, as the vaccination coverage against tuberculosis (Bacillus of Calmette and Guérin [BCG] vaccine) reached ≥95% among infants. The objective of this case-control study was to evaluate the protective effect of BCG on the risk of leprosy. METHODS: We used a population-based case-control study of 20 leprosy confirmed cases reported among residents of Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, diagnosed in 2016-2017. Three controls were selected from a random sample of households from the city. We a

Revisiting the dengue epidemic of 2011 in Paraguay: molecular epidemiology of dengue virus in the Asuncion metropolitan area.

BACKGROUND: Dengue is one of the most important re-emerging viral diseases and the most common human arthropod-borne viral infection worldwide. Any of the four Dengue virus serotypes (DENV-1 to 4) can cause asymptomatic infections or clinical manifestations that range in severity from a mild, self-limited illness, to a severe disease characterized by a shock syndrome that can lead to death. Paraguay suffers periodic epidemic outbreaks of dengue since 1988 when the DENV-1 was introduced in the country. Epidemics caused by all four serotypes have been reported and the country. Although dengue is

Susceptibility Profiles Among Sporothrix brasiliensis Genotypes in the Ongoing Zoonotic Sporotrichosis Epidemic in Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay.

Sporothrix brasiliensis is the predominant etiological agent of sporotrichosis in Brazil and has been progressively expanding its geographic distribution to other countries in South America. The human patients infected with S. brasiliensis usually respond favorably to antifungal therapy. However, therapeutic failure may occur, and management may be particularly challenging in cases of severe disease. We recently reported that at least seven S. brasiliensis genotypes circulate across South America. However, their biological and clinical relevance of this genetic diversity remains poorly underst

Unravelling Anopheles Dynamics in a Malaria-Free Paraguay: Species Distributions, Bioclimatic Niches, and Implications for Resurgence Risks.

Malaria, caused by a protozoan parasite of the genus Plasmodium and transmitted by mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles, remains a significant vector-borne disease worldwide. In 2018, Paraguay became the first country in the Americas in 45 years to be certified malaria-free by the World Health Organization. Between 2016 and 2017, a period with no reported human malaria cases, the presence of Plasmodium spp. in Anopheles mosquitoes was investigated in the departments of Caaguazú and Alto Paraná. These studies found that the most prevalent Anopheles species in Paraguay, including Anopheles albitars

Prevalence of Wheat/Gluten-Related Disorders and Gluten-Free Diet in Paraguay: An Online Survey-Based Study.

Gluten-related disorders (GRDs) are increasing around the world, but their magnitude and relevance remain unknown in most Latin American countries. Thus, an online survey was conducted to estimate the prevalence of GRDs as well as adherence to a gluten-free diet (GFD) in Paraguayan adult population. There were 1058 individuals surveyed using a validated questionnaire (response rate of 93.9%). The self-reported prevalence rates were as follows (95% CI): gluten sensitivity (GS), 10.30% (8.53-12.29); non-celiac GS (NCGS), 5.19% (3.94-6.71); physician-diagnosed celiac disease (PD-CD), 3.11% (2.15-

Genetic and toxinological divergence among populations of Tityus trivittatus Kraepelin, 1898 (Scorpiones: Buthidae) inhabiting Paraguay and Argentina.

Envenoming by scorpions in genus Tityus is a public health problem in Tropical America. One of the most medically significant species is Tityus trivittatus, which is known to occur from southwest Brazil to central-northern and eastern Argentina. In this work, we studied the lethality, composition, antigenicity, and enzymatic activity of venom from a T. trivittatus population found further north in urban areas of eastern Paraguay, where it has caused serious envenomation of children. Our results indicate that the population is of medical importance as it produces a potently toxic venom with an

Genotoxicity of water from the Paraguay River near Cáceres-MT, Brazil in the Drosophila wing-spot test.

The genotoxic activity of surface water samples from four sites along the Paraguay River, near Cáceres, Mato Grosso State, Brazil, was investigated using the Drosophila melanogaster Somatic Mutation and Recombination test (SMART). Effluents from sanitary sewers and agroindustrial effluents (residual effluents from slaughterhouses, leather tanneries, and dairies) flow into the Paraguay River, and directly or indirectly contaminate water from sampling sites 1-3. Site 4 was an upriver reference site that received no domestic or agroindustrial discharges. Water was collected at 4 time periods: Sep

Accounting for heterogeneity in mosquito exposure to forecast chikungunya outbreaks in Reunion Island and Paraguay: a mathematical modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Heterogeneity in mosquito exposure at a fine spatial scale is well documented but often neglected in mathematical models of arbovirus transmission, particularly for real-time forecasting. We aimed to assess whether accounting for heterogeneity in mosquito exposure improves the ability of transmission models to reproduce past chikungunya outbreaks and to forecast an ongoing outbreak in real time. METHODS: We extended an existing transmission model, originally developed to forecast dengue outbreaks in Reunion Island and incorporating seasonality, to include heterogeneity in mosquito

Mosquito diversity and arbovirus detection in Paraguay: First evidence of dengue and chikungunya virus infection in field populations.

Arboviruses are mosquito-borne viruses of major public health importance, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. In Paraguay, dengue (DENV) and chikungunya (CHIKV) viruses are among the most epidemiologically relevant; however, studies integrating mosquito and arbovirus surveillance remain scarce. This study aimed to characterize mosquito assemblage composition across different ecological settings and investigate arbovirus circulation in field-collected mosquitoes. A total of 4,595 mosquitoes (609 pools) were collected between 2013 and 2024 from urban, rural, and Atlantic Forest env

Cucolepis cincta gen.n. et sp.n. (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidea) from the squirrel cuckoo Piaya cayana lesson (Aves: Cuculiformes) from Paraguay.

Cucolepis gen. n. is erected as monotypic for Cucolepis cincta sp. n., a new species of cyclophyllidean cestode of the family Paruterinidae. The new species is described from the squirrel cuckoo, Piaya cayana Lesson (Aves: Cuculiformes), taken from two localities in Paraguay in 1984 and 1985. This new genus is most similar to the genus Triaenorhina Spasskii et Shumilo, 1965 in terms of the hook morphology and large epiphyseal structures extending from both the handle and guard, but differs in several aspects of the strobilar morphology, such as the shape of the cirrus sac, genital atrium, uter

Streptococcus pneumoniae carriage, antimicrobial resistance, and serotype distribution in children and adults from Paraguay in the post-vaccinal era.

INTRODUCTION: Infections due to Streptococcus pneumoniae, including pneumonia and meningitis, are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, especially in low-and lower middle-income countries (LMICs) worldwide. Most reviews highlight the geographical differences in serotype replacement and antibiotic resistance observed through invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) surveillance, predominantly in high-income countries; however, data from many LMICs remain limited or poorly characterized. This study was conducted among healthy children aged 2-59 months and adults living in the same household, to
