Brain integrity and cerebral atrophy in Vietnam combat veterans with and without posttraumatic stress disorder.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with decreased hippocampal volume, but the relationship between trauma and brain morphology in the absence of PTSD is less clear. In this study, measures of brain integrity were determined by estimating gray and white matter regional brain volumes using structural magnetic resonance imaging in six patients with PTSD and in five controls with comparable trauma exposure but without clinical evidence of PTSD. The only statistically significant volume difference between groups was observed multivariately in the white matter of the right temporal l

Differentiating suicide risk in treatment-resistant depression: clinical and functional imaging correlates of suicidal ideation and attempt.

BACKGROUND: Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is associated with elevated suicide risk. While many individuals with TRD experience suicidal ideation (SI), only a subset progress to suicide attempts (SA). This study identifies resting-state functional connectivity (FC) differences between individuals with TRD who experience SI only and those with SA history, and examines how these neural differences relate to clinical and trait-level suicide risk factors. METHODS: Resting-state functional MRI data were acquired from 41 individuals with TRD and lifetime SI, including 21 with no SA history (S

Different cerebral functional segregation in Sjogren's syndrome with or without systemic lupus erythematosus revealed by amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation.

BACKGROUND: Sjögren's syndrome (SjS) associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SjS-SLE) was considered a standalone but often-overlooked entity. PURPOSE: To assess altered spontaneous brain activity in SjS-SLE and SjS using amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixteen patients with SjS-SLE, 17 patients with SjS, and 17 matched controls underwent neuropsychological tests and subsequent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) examinations. The ALFF value was calculated based on blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) fMRI. Statistical parametr

Neural correlates of anhedonia in young adults with subthreshold depression: A graph theory approach for cortical-subcortical structural covariance.

BACKGROUND: Anhedonia is an enduring symptom of subthreshold depression (StD) and predict later onset of major depressive disorder (MDD). Brain structural covariance describes the inter-regional distribution of morphological changes compared to healthy controls (HC) and reflects brain maturation and disease progression. We investigated neural correlates of anhedonia from the structural covariance. METHODS: T1-weighted brain magnetic resonance images were acquired from 79 young adults (26 StD, 30 MDD, and 23 HC). Intra-individual structural covariance networks of 68 cortical surface area (CSAs

Activation likelihood estimation of convergent resting-state brain alterations in diarrhea-predominant IBS: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) has provided valuable insights into brain activity alterations; however, despite the increasing number of neuroimaging studies, the results remain inconsistent. This study aimed to perform a coordinate-based activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis to identify functionally impaired brain regions showing convergent alterations in IBS-D. METHODS: Coordinate-based ALE was applied to rs-fMRI studies of IBS-D t

Deeper insights into semantic relations: an fMRI study of part-whole and functional associations.

Cognitive neuroscience research on semantics recognizes a distinction between categorical and associated relations. However, associations can be divided further, such as into part-whole and functional relations. We investigated the neural basis of both relations using a picture-word interference task in an fMRI study. While the left supramarginal gyrus and the right inferior temporal sulcus were activated by part-whole over functional relations, the same applies to the right parahippocampal complex contrasting the functional over part-whole relations. The small effect sizes of our analyses hav

The neural correlates of topographical disorientation-a lesion analysis study.

Topographical disorientation refers to the selective inability to orient oneself in familiar surroundings. However, to date its neural correlates remain poorly understood. Here we use quantitative lesion analysis and a lesion network mapping approach in order to investigate seven patients with topographical disorientation. Our findings link not only the posterior parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) and retrosplenial cortex but also the lingual gyrus, the precuneus and the fusiform gyrus to topographical disorientation. We propose that topographical disorientation is due to the inability to integrate f

Changes of cerebral current source by audiovisual erotic stimuli in premature ejaculation patients.

INTRODUCTION: Premature ejaculation (PE) is one of the most common forms of male sexual dysfunction. The mechanisms of PE remain poorly understood, despite its high prevalence. AIM: To investigate the pathophysiology and causes of PE in the central nervous system, we tried to observe the changes in brain current source distribution by audiovisual induction of sexual arousal. METHODS: Electroencephalograpies were recorded in patients with PE (45.0 +/- 10.3 years old, N = 18) and in controls (45.6 +/- 9.8 years old, N = 18) during four 10-minute segments of resting, watching a music video exce

Abnormal brain morphology and morphological brain network in adults with acute mild traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) commonly has long-term cognitive and functional consequences; however, it is not clear whether these adverse outcomes begin in the acute phase of mTBI and are associated with changes in brain morphology and function. METHODS: The current study used T1-weighted MRI to determine whether cortical thickness, gray matter volume (GMV), and morphological brain networks were altered in patients with mTBI within 7 days of injury, and to examine whether these changes were associated with postacute cognitive and emotional abnormalities. Adults aged 18-56 ye

Pure topographical disorientation--the anatomical basis of landmark agnosia.

We used MRI studies of four patients to investigate the lesions responsible for landmark agnosia. A detailed investigation of the relationship between the symptoms and the lesions suggests that the right posterior part of the parahippocampal gyrus is critical for the acquisition of novel information about buildings and landscapes, and that the same region plus the anterior half of the lingual gyrus and the adjacent fusiform gyrus play an important role in the identification of familiar buildings and landscapes. Furthermore, the lesion responsible for prosopagnosia, which frequently occurs with

Regional cerebral blood flow in major depression treated with electroconvulsive therapy: an arterial spin labeling magnetic resonance study.

Until recently, regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in major depressive disorder (MDD) patients treated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) using arterial spin labeling (ASL) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have seldom been studied. We report here 10 patients with MDD treated by bilateral frontotemporal ECT. rCBF was assessed with ASL MRI pre- and post-ECT, and compared with patients treated by antidepressants. Compared to pre-ECT, rCBF significantly decreased in the bilateral frontal gyrus. Compared to medication, in patients treated with ECT, rCBF showed a significant decrease in the left

"Change the mind and you change the brain": effects of cognitive-behavioral therapy on the neural correlates of spider phobia.

Questions pertaining to the neurobiological effects of psychotherapy are now considered among the most topical in psychiatry. With respect to this issue, positron emission tomography (PET) findings indicate that cognitive and behavioral modifications, occurring in a psychotherapeutic context, can lead to regional brain metabolic changes in patients with major depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder. The goal of the present functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, which constitutes the first neuroimaging investigation of the effects of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) using an

Pattern of cortical thinning in logopenic progressive aphasia patients in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Logopenic progressive aphasia (LPA) is an uncommon neurodegenerative disorder primarily characterized by word-finding difficulties and sentence repetition impairment. Prominent cortical atrophy around left temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) is a classical imaging feature of LPA. This study investigated cortical thinning pattern in clinically diagnosed LPA patients using non-demented subjects as a control group. We also aimed to explore whether there was prominent thinning of other cortical area additional to the well-recognized left TPJ. METHODS: Thicknesses of all cortical regions w

Structural and functional alterations of medial temporal lobe in major depressive disorder with anxious distress.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) with anxious distress is a severe subtype. The hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus are implicated in MDD, but findings are inconsistent. This study investigated structural and functional alterations in these regions in a clinical MDD cohort with anxious distress. We analyzed data from 78 MDD patients with anxious distress and 60 healthy controls. Structural MRI volumes and resting-state functional metrics [Amplitude of Low-Frequency Fluctuations (ALFF), fractional ALFF (fALFF), Regional Homogeneity (ReHo)] were extracted for bilateral hippocampus and parahippo

Stereological Analysis of the Rhesus Monkey Perirhinal and Parahippocampal Cortices.

The perirhinal and parahippocampal cortices are key components of the medial temporal lobe memory system. Despite their essential roles in mnemonic and perceptual functions, there is limited quantitative information regarding their structural characteristics. Here, we implemented design-based stereological techniques to provide estimates of neuron number, neuronal soma size, and volume of the different layers and subdivisions of the perirhinal and parahippocampal cortices in adult macaque monkeys (Macaca mulatta, 5-9 years of age). We found that areas 36r and 36c of the perirhinal cortex and a

Using image reconstruction to investigate face perception in amnesia.

Damage to the medial temporal lobe (MTL), which is traditionally considered to subserve memory exclusively, has been reported to contribute to impaired face perception. However, it remains unknown how exactly such brain lesions may impact face representations and in particular facial shape and surface information, both of which are crucial for face perception. The present study employed a behavioral-based image reconstruction approach to reveal the pictorial representations of face perception in two amnesic patients: DA, who has an extensive bilateral MTL lesion that extends beyond the MTL in

Beyond the hippocampus: The role of parahippocampal-prefrontal communication in context-modulated behavior.

Multiple paradigms indicate that the physical environment can influence spontaneous and learned behavior. In rodents, context-dependent behavior is putatively supported by the prefrontal cortex and the medial temporal lobe. A preponderance of the literature has targeted the role of the hippocampus. In addition to the hippocampus proper, the medial temporal lobe also comprises parahippocampal areas, including the perirhinal and postrhinal cortices. These parahippocampal areas directly connect with multiple regions in the prefrontal cortex. The function of these connections, however, is not well

Extensive cortical functional connectivity of the human hippocampal memory system.

The cortical connections of the human hippocampal memory system are fundamental to understanding its operation in health and disease, especially in the context of the great development of the human cortex. The functional connectivity of the human hippocampal system was analyzed in 172 participants imaged at 7T in the Human Connectome Project. The human hippocampus has high functional connectivity not only with the entorhinal cortex, but also with areas that are more distant in the ventral 'what' stream including the perirhinal cortex and temporal cortical visual areas. Parahippocampal gyrus TF
