Electromyography findings in L5 radiculopathy are not associated with fatty infiltration of paraspinal muscles: a retrospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Increased fatty infiltration of the paraspinal muscles (PM) has been recognized as a sign of decreased muscle quality in patients with degenerative disc disease. However, whether fatty infiltration is a consequence of a neurogenic process due to spinal nerve root compression has not yet been determined. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation between fatty infiltration of the paraspinal muscles (PM) and neurogenic remodeling of motor unit action potentials (MUAPs) in patients with lumbar radiculopathy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 58 adult patients (32 women) with L5 radiculopathy

Accuracy of automated segmentation of gluteus and paraspinal muscles in patients with hip osteoarthritis using TotalSegmentator in 3Dslicer.

BACKGROUND: Muscle atrophy is prevalent among patients with hip osteoarthritis, yet quantitative assessment of the peri-hip muscles remains challenging. Although computed tomography (CT) enables objective evaluation, manual segmentation is time-consuming and impractical for routine use. TotalSegmentator, an artificial intelligence-based extension of 3D Slicer, allows rapid automated muscle segmentation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy, reproducibility, and clinical relevance of automated peri-hip muscle segmentation using TotalSegmentator in patients with hip osteoarthri

Paraspinal muscles activities in S-shaped adolescent idiopathic scoliosis during physiotherapeutic scoliosis specific exercise: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: While Insights into the dynamics of the paraspinal muscles can contribute to more targeted interventions for individuals with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), few studies have focused on changes in the paraspinal muscles of AIS during Physiotherapeutic Scoliosis-Specific Exercise (PSSE). Therefore, this study compared the differences in muscle activities between AIS and healthy subjects during PSSE, aiming to provide a scientific guidance of clinical treatment and daily life for AIS. METHODS: Twelve S-shaped AIS and ten age-matched healthy controls participated. Five paired

Mapping the Cortical Representation of Paraspinal Muscles Using Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Optimized in People With Chronic Back Pain.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a global burden with an unknown etiology. Reorganization of the cortical representation of paraspinal muscles in the primary motor cortex (M1) may be related to the pathology. Single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), commonly used to map the functional organization of M1, is not potent enough to stimulate the cortical maps of paraspinal muscles in M1 in CLBP patients with reduced corticospinal excitability (CSE) with intensities even as high as maximum stimulator output (100% MSO). This makes TMS mapping impractical for these patients.

[Scoliosis in the patients with both severe mental retardation and severe physical disability--computed tomography of paraspinal muscles].

Patients with both severe mental retardation and severe physical disability, so-called "jushouji", often have scoliosis as one of the complications. The correlation between radiological findings of paraspinal muscles and progression of scoliosis was investigated by computed tomography (CT) in 15 patients. We took the CT of paraspinal muscles at the apical vertebral level in each patient, and measured the size of cross-sectional area and the CT value of paraspinal muscles of the both concave and convex side. There was no significant difference of the size of cross-sectional area of the muscles

Systematic Review of Paraspinal Muscle Changes in Lumbar Spondylolisthesis: MRI and CT Insights.

BACKGROUND: Spondylolisthesis is a frequently encountered condition in orthopedics, requiring dynamic stability maintained primarily by the paraspinal muscles. This systematic review evaluates the cross-sectional area (CSA) and fat infiltration (FI) of paraspinal muscles-specifically the multifidus, erector spinae, and psoas major-in lumbar spondylolisthesis (LS) to understand their roles in spinal stability and progression in degenerative and isthmic forms. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, PubMed, Cochrane, and Scopus were searched as of September 2024. Fourteen retrospective studies us

Impact of different paraspinal muscle mass on the prognosis of ACDF-a finite element analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a common degenerative disease of the cervical spine, for which anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) serves as an effective surgical treatment. Recent studies have suggested that the quality of the paraspinal muscles, particularly the multifidus muscle, is closely related to postoperative outcomes; However, biomechanical evidence remains limited. The aim of this study is to investigate the biomechanical impact of varying paraspinal muscle mass on the cervical spine following ACDF. METHODS: A finite element model of the cervical s

Unilateral lumbar paraspinal muscle degeneration is not sufficient to drive spinal deformity in mice.

PURPOSE: Paraspinal muscle degeneration and dysfunction are commonly observed in patients with adult spinal deformity, though their causative role remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of unilateral glycerol-induced muscle degeneration on the development of spinal deformity. It was hypothesized that glycerol injections would increase fibrosis (collagen content) and lead to spinal curvature towards the left side. METHODS: Male and female mice were assigned to control (no injection), saline (sham), or glycerol-injection groups. Injections were administered to the right-side l

Synovial sarcoma of the spinal canal and paraspinal muscle and retroperitoneum: a case with extensive calcification.

INTRODUCTION: Synovial sarcoma (SS) is a rare mesenchymal malignant tumor. SS of the spine or retroperitoneum is an extremely rare site. Approximately 30% cases show focal calcifications on radiographs and computed tomography (CT) images, while extensive calcification rarely occurs. We presented a case of SS involving the spinal canal and paraspinal muscle and retroperitoneum, which showed extensive calcification on CT. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: The present report describes the case of a 13-year-old girl suffering from a tumor in the spinal canal and paraspinal muscle and retroperitoneum with ex

Myasthenia gravis with concomitant severe paraspinal muscle degeneration and mitochondrial DNA4977 deletion.

Recent reports have discussed the many causes of dropped head syndrome and bent spine syndrome. We described a case of myasthenia gravis with concomitant severe degeneration of spinal muscle, mitochondrial DNA4977 deletion and sensorineural deafness. These associations were thought to be independent, however this is an important case to consider the etiology of bent spine syndrome.
