IMPORTANCE: Several maternal exposures during pregnancy are considered predisposing factors for offspring neurodevelopmental conditions. However, many of these exposures may be noncausal and biased by maternal genetic liability.
OBJECTIVE: To assess whether pregnancy-related predisposing factors for offspring neurodevelopmental conditions are associated with maternal genetic liability for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, and schizophrenia and to compare associations for maternal genetic liability with those for paternal genetic liability, which could indicate that pate

No study to date has simultaneously tested how poor peer relations, generic risk factors, and parental attitudes impact the behavioral and emotional challenges of children who vary in their gender expression. In a community sample, the present study investigated various hypothesized psychosocial and generic risk factors regarding the association between childhood gender nonconformity (GNC) and psychological well-being. Canadian parents/guardians reported on their children aged 6-12 years (N = 1719, 48.8% assigned male at birth) regarding their child's GNC, measured by the Gender Identity Quest

RESEARCH FINDINGS: In the context of parent-child book sharing, cultural influences on cognitive distancing language and its associations with child executive function (EF) have been understudied. This study examined cultural group similarities/differences in parent and child book-sharing distancing language among preschool-aged dual language learners from low-income Mexican American (MA) and Chinese American (CA) families. We further tested concurrent relations between parent/child distancing language and children's EF. The sample consisted of 88 children (45 MAs, 43 CAs, age = 38-68 months)

The importance of family relations for the therapy of psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents is discussed reporting results from an empirical study carried out in an inpatient sample of a child and adolescent psychiatric unit with regard to the quality of mother-child resp, father-child relation and its influence on coping processes. Whether adolescents suffering from a psychiatric disorder are able to cope with their problems during the course of a therapy, depends on their individual and social resources. Therapy outcome is to a great extent influenced by the emotional quality of

Child abuse is a pervasive problem impacting millions of children. Researchers largely rely on parent-report questionnaires to examine risk for child abuse, leaving a gap in research concerning the link between observed parent and child behaviors and child abuse potential. The current study pursued a multi-method approach to explore relations between parent and child factors and child abuse potential (via the Brief Child Abuse Potential Inventory; BCAP) in a sample of 84 referred for behavioral problems in Australia. About half of the sample engaged in socially desirable responding which resul

The current study aims to clarify the longitudinal relations among parent emotion regulation (ER), child ER, and children's oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms. In the current study, parents of 275 children (195 boys, 70.1%) with ODD symptoms (Mage = 9.32 years, SD = 1.64) reported their ER using the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale, child ERs using the Emotion Regulation Checklist, and children's ODD symptoms using the eight symptoms indicated in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR) at three time points (T1, T2, and T3) within 2 years. Reliability of the GRBAS tool for perceptual evaluation of paediatric voice disorder is measured in this study of children with a history of laryngotracheal reconstruction surgery (LTR). Additionally, the relationship between parent proxy/child self-report of voice-related quality of life with clinician perceptual rating of voice quality is analysed. Eleven children with a history of LTR provided voice recordings following the stimuli set by the CAPE-V protocol. Subjective impact of voice quality on life was measured using the paediatric voice-related quality of life questionnaire. Four traine

Parents of children with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) experience considerable stress and challenges in parenting. Based on a 2-year, 3-wave longitudinal study of children with ODD (N = 243, mean age = 9.47 years, SD = 1.53; 72.8% boys) and their parents in Mainland China, our study examined the relation between 3 dimensions of parenting stress (i.e., Parental Distress, Parent-Child Dysfunctional Interaction, and Difficult Child) and their children's ODD symptoms. Using cross-lagged panel models, we tested the bidirectional relation between parenting stress and children's ODD symptoms. W

BACKGROUND: Development of secure attachment is crucial to establish and maintain healthy relationships with others throughout life. For parents with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, challenged parental functioning may compromise the sensitive caregiving needed to establish secure child attachment. We aimed to examine pre-adolescent attachment, predictors related to caregiving, and middle childhood attachment predictors of pre-adolescent mental disorders.
METHODS: In a population-based nationwide cohort of 522 children of parents with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder and population-based c

On the basis of questionnaires administered to almost 2,000 high school students in Cali, Colombia, a subset of items was selected that deal primarily with parent--child relationships. This 53-item set, referred to as the Drug Risk Scale (DRS), was administered to two new cross-validation samples, one consisting of high school students and the other consisting of drug addicts attending drug rehabilitation centers. Significant differences in parent--child relations were found between these new groups. The DRS was also found to have reasonably high sensitivity and specificity. Its potential valu

Social relations model analysis was used to clarify family dynamics associated with parental affective style, an index of parent-to-child behavior associated with severe psychopathology in the child. Results from 70 families who had sought clinical services for an adolescent family member (39 girls and 31 boys) suggest (a) that adolescents elicit the negative parental affective style that puts them at risk and (b) that elicitation of negative parental affect is strongly tied to adolescents' expression of negative affect toward their parents (i.e., a reciprocity effect). The findings support th

Secure attachment to parents is known to promote children's self-regulation (SR), but the mechanisms explaining its associations with different aspects of SR, particularly in high-risk families, remain underexplored. We investigated maternal and child responsiveness as parallel mediators linking early attachment security to later SR, assessed within and outside mother-child relationships, with 186 low-income mother-child dyads. Attachment security was assessed using the Attachment Q-Set at 2.5 years, maternal and child responsiveness were observed during mother-child interactions at 3.5 years,

OBJECTIVE: Limited research has documented the continuity of trauma exposure between parents and young children and the relation between intergenerational trauma and maternal parenting and child outcomes. This study examined intergenerational trauma among African American families from low-income backgrounds and its relation to parenting processes and children's behavior.
METHOD: Participants represent a subsample of 157 African American mothers and their 4- to 7-year-old children in an urban prekindergarten program. Researchers collected data on maternal and child exposure to trauma, demogra

PURPOSE: Black South African women and girls face high rates of violence victimization, including physical, sexual, and emotional abuse in childhood and intimate partner violence (IPV) in adulthood. U.S.-based research suggests that violence victimization predicts parenting difficulties, but this relation has not been examined in a South African context.
METHOD: Among a sample of 99 Black South African female caregivers, we examined rates of child abuse, IPV, and cumulative trauma, and we explored the associations between caregivers' victimization history and current parenting quality (i.e.,

BACKGROUND: Given the robust evidence base for the efficacy of evidence-based treatments targeting youth anxiety, researchers have advanced beyond efficacy outcome analysis to identify mechanisms of change and treatment directionality. Grounded in developmental transactional models, interventions for young children at risk for anxiety by virtue of behaviorally inhibited temperament often target parenting and child factors implicated in the early emergence and maintenance of anxiety. In particular, overcontrolling parenting moderates risk for anxiety among highly inhibited children, just as chi

OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that more supportive/less negative parenting is associated with lower resting blood pressure and heart rates in children and to determine whether parent and/or child gender and developmental stage moderate the relations in question.
DESIGN: Longitudinal data on 835 children/families who participated in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development were analysed. Children (one per family) were followed from age 1 month to 11 years.
METHODS: Data were collected from children and their families via
