Are Parent Substance Use Severity and Psychopathology Associated with Parenting Behaviors Among Parents with Substance Use Disorders?

OBJECTIVE: We sought to understand associations between parent substance use severity, fentanyl use, and parent psychopathology with two domains of parenting behaviors, warmth and hostility. DESIGN: We analyzed cross-sectional data from parents with substance use disorders (n = 308). We tested whether substance use severity and psychopathology were associated with parenting behaviors (warmth and hostility). We also examined associations between fentanyl use and parenting behaviors. Additionally, we investigated whether the interactions between substance use severity and psychopathology, as we

Parents' Past Bonding Experience with Their Parents Interacts with Current Parenting Stress to Influence the Quality of Interaction with Their Child.

Healthy dyadic interactions serve as a foundation for child development and are typically characterised by mutual emotional availability of both the parent and child. However, several parental factors might undermine optimal parent-child interactions, including the parent's current parenting stress levels and the parent's past bonding experiences with his/her own parents. To date, no study has investigated the possible interaction of parenting stress and parental bonding history with their own parents on the quality of emotional availability during play interactions. In this study, 29 father-c

Latent profiles of parental attachment styles and their associations with parenting behaviors among parents of school-aged children.

This study utilized Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) to identify attachment style latent profiles among parents of school-aged children and examine their association with parenting behaviors. Analysis of attachment anxiety and avoidance dimensions revealed four distinct parental profiles: low anxiety/avoidance, high anxiety/moderate avoidance, moderate anxiety/avoidance, and high anxiety/avoidance. Low anxiety/avoidance parents demonstrated significantly greater acceptance than all other latent profiles. Conversely, parents in high anxiety profiles exhibited significantly more rejecting behaviors

Mentalization-based intervention for parents with elevated parenting stress: protocol of a RCT of the lighthouse parenting programme in China.

UNLABELLED: The period of childhood and early adolescence, specifically prior to the age of 14, is a critical phase for the prevention of mental health problems. Nevertheless, prevention programs for this age group remain under recognized in China. In this domain, the lighthouse parenting programme (LPP) has successfully achieved initial results in several countries. This paper describes the protocol of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) using a waiting list control design to evaluate the potential efficacy and applicability of LPP with Chinese parents. The trial is designed as an exploratory

Parenting Young Children (PYC) for parents with intellectual and developmental disabilities: parents' experiences of the support program's methodology.

BACKGROUND: Research on how parents with intellectual and developmental disabilities perceive the Parenting Young Children (PTC) support program for the development of parenting skills is scarce. The study explored parents' experiences of PYC's methodology. METHOD: Interviews were conducted with 15 Swedish parents (8 mothers, 7 fathers) at risk for child neglect who had received PYC for 6 months or longer. The interviews were analysed with reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS: Two main themes, with six subthemes, were identified: "Developing a trusting relationship with the PYC practitioner"

The impact of parental general anxiety disorder on parenting practices among Libyan parents: cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders is one of the most prevalent mental diseases globally, with cases rising by over 55% from 1990 to 2019. Recent research suggests anxiety can be contagious and may affect daily routines and parenting practices. In North African and Middle Eastern countries, where people face unique challenges such as natural disasters, war, and economic instability, the impact of anxiety on parenting is not well studied. This study aims to explore how general anxiety disorder (GAD) affects parenting styles and to estimate the prevalence and risk factors of GAD among Libyan parents,

Mental Health, Parenting Stress, and Parenting Practices of Parents of Deaf or Hard of Hearing Children During the Pandemic.

The authors investigated parent mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic and its association with parenting behaviors of parents of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. An electronic survey was distributed to parents (N = 103). The results showed that they were experiencing elevated anxiety, depression, and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. A combined model demonstrated that parental distress was significantly associated with depression and with parental reports of symptoms indicating significantly higher distress. Parental distress was also significantly associated with paren

Parents Reaching Out to Parents: An Appreciative, Qualitative Evaluation of Stakeholder Experiences of the Parent Champions in the Community Project.

BACKGROUND: Bronchiolitis is a seasonal, global acute lower respiratory tract infection caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and is a leading cause of hospital admission in young children. A peer-led (parents to parents) intervention was implemented to empower parents of children at risk of bronchiolitis and reduce hospital admissions. This paper reported the evaluation that aimed to gain the perspectives and experiences of five key stakeholder groups. METHODS: A qualitative remote interview-based design, informed by Appreciative Inquiry was used. Thematic analysis was used. RESULTS:

Hope and parenting.

Parenting provides daily opportunities for growth. Hopeful thinking provides many of the skills that parents need to successfully navigate parenting challenges. Hopeful parents think intentionally about parenting goals, create pathways to reach these goals, and find ways to stay motivated to use the pathways when challenges arise. Research suggests that high hope parents report better psychological adjustment to parenthood than low hope parents. They also engage in more active coping with parenting stressors and show high levels of emotional connection to their children. To date, research on h

The parental paradox.

Parenthood is in turmoil: On the one hand many of the parental tasks have been taken over by social institutions and on the other psychological aspects of the parent-child relation are emphasized. We see three important developments: The relationship between parents and children has been democratized, the psychological and juridical position has been acknowledged and the social check on parental behaviour has changed dramatically. In this dynamic field, children's rights have risen as a new way of solving family problems. Rights for children create new possibilities for recognizing the growing

Is the Predisposition to Have More Children Beneficial among Parents with Only One Child? Evidence from Spanish Parents.

The fertility deficit in many European countries is related to a low rate of second births. Understanding the factors associated with the predisposition of one-child parents to have more children could contribute to the search for solutions to this social problem. Although previous evidence highlights the role of employment and social factors, psychological factors have been poorly investigated. This study examines the relationship between different psychosocial factors (rumination, personality, life satisfaction, perfectionism, social support, parental stress, guilt linked to work-family conf

Characteristics of Parents With High Expressed Emotion and Related Factors: A Study of Parents of Adults With Schizophrenia.

This study aimed to clarify characteristics of parents with high expressed emotion (EE) and related factors among parents of adults with schizophrenia. In total, 73 (25.3%) of the 289 parents had high EE (Family Attitude Scale [FAS] score ≥60), and 216 (74.7%) had low EE (FAS score <60). A multiple logistic regression analysis showed that high EE parents were more distressed (odds ratio [OR] = 1.27; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.16-1.39) and experienced more physical violence from their adult children with schizophrenia (OR = 2.86; 95% CI = 1.28-6.43); the children with schizophrenia had be

Shaping parents: impact of contrasting professional counseling on parents' decision making for children with disorders of sex development.

INTRODUCTION: The management of disorders or differences of sex development (DSD) remains complex, especially with respect to parents' decision for or against early genitoplasty. Most parents still tend to disfavor postponing surgery until the child is old enough to provide consent. AIM: To identify the determinants of parental decisions for or against early sex assignment surgery in DSD children, and in particular to assess the influence of contrasting behavior of health-care professionals and the information they dispense. METHODS: Preliminary data analysis from a focus group identified tw

Parents helping parents: does this psychological mechanism work when the child is affected by a high risk disease?

Mutual help relationships are very important among families with children affected by serious diseases. Discussing common problems and experiences can provide the stimulus for developing the coping strategies that are needed to face new situations. This can thus be done with an outlook that nurtures subsequent adjustment and restoration of a good quality of life after diagnosis and the start of therapy. However, when parents are faced with the ordeal of a child affected by a high risk disease, this interaction may have detrimental effects. Through our observations of the behavior and relations

Active parents, active youth? Exploring the association between physical activity of youth with Cystic Fibrosis and their parents.

BACKGROUND: Parents play a major role in shaping their children's physical activity (PA) behaviour. This study aimed to investigate the association between PA of youth with Cystic Fibrosis (YwCF) and their parents. METHODS: PA was measured by an ActiGraph GT3x-BT for seven consecutive days. Data were processed by GGIR and PA intensities were based on the age-specific Hildebrand equations. Moderate-to-vigorous PA was chosen as primary outcome. RESULTS: 26 YwCF-parent dyads participated. A significant positive association was found between parental PA behaviour and YwCF's PA behaviour for both

Comparison of isometric handgrip test among pregnant offspring of hypertensive parents and pregnant offspring of non-hypertensive parents.

CONTEXT: A family history of hypertension is one of the important risk factors for the development of pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH). Offspring of hypertensive parents should be screened for PIH. The isometric handgrip (IHG) test is used to assess autonomic function among them. Autonomic function dysregulation can indicate their predisposition to develop PIH later in the course of pregnancy. AIM AND OBJECTIVES: To compare the IHG among pregnant offspring of hypertensive parents (Group 1) and non-hypertensive parents (Group 2). METHODS AND MATERIALS: This is a cross-sectional study done

Parents' relationship to pain during children's cancer treatment - a preliminary validation of the Pain Flexibility Scale for Parents.

OBJECTIVES: Pain is one of the most frequent and burdensome symptoms for children with cancer. Psychological acceptance has been shown to be beneficial in chronic pain. Acceptance-based interventions for experimentally induced pain have been shown to predict increased pain tolerance and decreased pain intensity. An acceptance-based pilot study for children with cancer experiencing pain has shown promising results. Further, parental acceptance has been shown to predict decreased child distress. To date, no instruments measuring acceptance in the context of acute pain in children are available.
