Calvarial defect in human anencephaly.

The calvarial defect in human anencephaly has been studied on 21 anencephalic skulls in all of which the defect extended into the vertebral column. Based on the boundaries of the defect, a nomenclature of the anomaly has been proposed that is simpler, more scientific, and more informative than previous ones because it expresses the precise extent of destruction of the cranial vault. In the present study, the defect was "fronto-occipito-vertebral" in in 71.4%, "occipito-vertebral" in 23.8%, and "parieto-occipito-vertebral" in 4.8% of cases. The morphologic details of the cranial bones bounding

Acute effects of calvarial damage on dural mast cells, pial vascular permeability, and cerebral cortical histamine levels in rats and mice.

UNLABELLED: Neurological complications after mild head injury can include vasogenic edema and/or subsequent development of epilepsy, conditions associated with elevated histamine. In the present study we assessed the potential of mast cells located in the dura mater to contribute to elevated cortical histamine and breakdown of the blood-brain barrier after minor head injury, modeled by either a parietal craniectomy or producing a groove in (scoring) the parietal bone surface to model a grazing head injury. We measured the following effects at 5-20 min after a unilateral parietal craniectomy (r

Effects of Ovariectomy and Low-Calcium Diet on Six Different Sites of the Rat Skeleton.

The aim of this study was to evaluate structural and micro-architectural changes in the mandible, parietal bone, femur, and tibia in OVX rats at different time periods after ovariectomy. Forty-two 11-month-old female Wistar rats were used. Six rats without surgery were euthanized to serve as a baseline. Eighteen rats were ovariectomized and fed with a calcium-deficient diet, and eighteen animals were used as controls (Ctrls) and fed with a standard diet. Six OVX rats and six Ctrls were euthanized at 3, 6, and 9 months. Qualitative histology and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) were perfo

Acute enlargement of subdural hygroma due to subdural hemorrhage in a victim of child abuse.

An 11-month-old female baby was found dead by her mother. Cranial postmortem CT prior to the forensic autopsy showed dilatation of bilateral extra-axial spaces and ventricles. The autopsy revealed a new linear fracture of the left parietal bone and occipital bone, and a healed linear fracture of the right parietal bone and occipital bone like a mirror image of the left one as well. Intracranially, 230ml of subdural fluid were collected, which was mixed with blood. There was a fresh hemorrhage around a bridging vein of the left parietal lobe and the dura mater. Moreover, the outer side of the c

Haemodynamic effects of lead(II) acetate, ethanol, and their combination in rats.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to analyse the haemodynamic background of the hypertension-inducing effect of lead and the role of alcohol effect in hypertension caused by lead. METHODS: Daily lead acetate doses of 0 or 500 mg/kg were administered to Sprague-Dawley male rats. One half of each group received water containing 5% w/v sugar (without ethanol), while the other half of each group received water containing 5% w/v sugar and 10% v/v ethanol, respectively, to drink. At the end of the 12th week ECG and haemodynamic tests were performed with the method of McDevitt and Nies (1976). The

Parietal foramina complicated by meningocele.

Parietal foramina are symmetrical bone defects adjacent to the sagittal suture and are not usually associated with other malformations. A case is described in which scalp tumors protruded through the foramina and proved to be meningoceles. No such cases appear to have been previously reported. The possible developmental mechanisms are discussed.

Accelerated Bone Induction of Adult Rat Compact Bone Plate Scratched by Ultrasonic Scaler Using Acidic Electrolyzed Water.

Fresh compact bone, the candidate graft material for bone regeneration, is usually grafted for horizontal bone augmentation. However, the dense calcified structure inhibits the release of growth factors and limits cellular and vascular perfusion. We aimed to create mechano-chemically altered dense skull bone by ultrasonic treatment, along with partial demineralization using commercially available acidic electrolyzed water (AEW). The parietal skull bone of an 11-month-old Wistar rat was exposed and continuously treated with a piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler tip for 1 min, using AEW (pH 2.3) or

The presence of Helicobacter pylori in postmenopausal women is not a factor to the decrease of bone mineral density.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis affects approximately 30% of postmenopausal women. Gastrectomy, pernicious anemia, and more recently Helicobacter pylori infection, have all been implicated in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis. A reduced parietal cell mass is a common feature in these conditions. AIM: To study a possible relationship between chronic gastritis, parietal cell density of the oxyntic mucosa and bone mineral density in postmenopausal women, as chronic gastritis, Helicobacter pylori infection and osteoporosis are frequently observed in the elderly. METHODS: Fifty postmenopausal women (61.7

Fatal cranial injury in an individual from Messina (Sicily) during the times of the Roman Empire.

Forensic and archaeological examinations of human skeletons can provide us with evidence of violence. In this paper, we present the patterns of two cranial lesions found on an adult male (T173) buried in a grave in the necropolis 'Isolato 96', Messina, Sicily, dating back to the Roman Empire (1st century BC - 1st century AD). The skull reveals two perimortem traumatic lesions, one produced by a sharp object on the right parietal bone and the other one on the left parietal bone, presumably the result of a fall. The interpretation of fracture patterns found in this cranium are an illustration of

Impacts of ultrasonic osteotomy devices on bone regeneration and brain activity in a mouse model.

Ultrasonic osteotomy devices (UODs) have emerged as precise bone-cutting instruments with soft tissue-sparing benefits; yet their impact on bone healing and adjacent neural tissue remains underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the effects of UODs versus conventional rotary high-speed burr (HSB) on bone healing and central nervous functions using mouse split calvarial bone defect models. Bilateral parietal bone defects were created in the skulls of mice using UOD (right) and HSB (left). Intraoperative heat generation was recorded using a thermal camera. Bone healing progress was assesse

A case of bilateral thinning of the cranial bones in an elderly individual.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral thinning of the parietal bone is a condition that has been known since the 18th century, with several names being given since its discovery. The aetiology is unknown but there are numerous theories. Although this condition is rarely encountered, its clinical significance may be relevant to traumatic cases. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to present a case of bilateral thinning observed in the cranium of an 87-year elderly female, which was assessed macroscopically and radiologically to visualize the exact parameters of the thinned areas to discuss a plausible cause and aetio

Foramina parietalia permagna in a Nigerian family.

BACKGROUND: Enlarged parietal foramina are defects in the skull and are believed to be benign and familial and caused by variable degree of defective intramembranous ossification of the parietal bones. They are rare and asymptomatic, usually associated with ALX4 or MSX2 gene mutations and transmitted as autosomal dominant. OBJECTIVE: To highlight the importance of plain radiographs in the diagnosis of this condition and need for health education in affected families. METHODS: A four-year-old male presented with a 14-day history of fever, seizures, and loss of consciousness. Full clinical and

Prevention of temporal depression that follows fronto-orbital advancement for craniosynostosis.

Contour abnormalities presenting after fronto-orbital advancement for craniosynostosis are common. Often there is bilateral temporal depression, the result of leaving a coronal bony gap posterior to the advanced segments. The authors present techniques to prevent this temporal depression by utilizing full-thickness bone grafts for structural support in the inferior coronal defects, and cortico-cancellous graft in the remaining superior coronal and parietal donor defects. Prior to contouring and repositioning the frontal elements, a hand-driven Hudson brace and D'Ericco bit is used to harvest c

New insights into enlarged parietal foramina: an anatomical, radiological, and histological study.

INTRODUCTION: Enlarged parietal foramina (EPF) are rare, symmetric calvarial defects. Although typically benign, they are clinically significant due to possible associations with venous malformations and inherited genetic variants. However, the anatomical, radiological, and histological details of these entities are scant in the medical literature. METHODS: Two hundred and fifty adult human skulls from multiple anatomical collections were examined for EPF. Gross morphometric data were supplemented by high-resolution microcomputed tomography (microCT) and histological analysis (H&E, PAS, and M

Effect of direct oral anticoagulant dabigatran on early bone healing: An experimental study in rats.

BACKGROUND: Dabigatran belongs to the new generation of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). Its advantages are oral administration and no need for international normalized ratio (INR) monitoring. Although its use has increased, its potential side effects on bone healing and remodeling have not been fully investigated. The present study aimed to evaluate the possible effects of dabigatran on early bone healing. METHODS: Sixteen male Wistar rats were divided into two groups; in group A, 20-mg/kg dabigatran dose was administered orally daily for 15 days, while group B served as a control. Two ci
