Magnetic resonance imaging of salivary gland tumours: Key findings for imaging characterisation.

Salivary gland tumours are rare, representing only 3% of all head and neck neoplasms, with the parotid gland being the most common site (80 %). The risk of malignancy is inversely proportional to the size of the gland: lesions arising in the sublingual or minor salivary glands are more likely to be malignant, whereas parotid gland neoplasms are mostly benign. Fine needle aspiration cytology and core needle biopsy are considered the most accurate modalities for the diagnosis of a salivary gland neoplasm; however, they are not always conclusive due to procedural sampling errors and for the prese

Parotid abscess: an unusual cause of facial nerve palsy.

Facial nerve palsy with a parotid mass is usually associated with malignant neoplasm of parotid gland. Its occurrence as a complication of parotid abscess is extremely rare. A literature review revealed only 16 cases of facial nerve palsy associated with suppurative parotitis or parotid abscess were reported. We present a case of deep parotid abscess which is complicated by facial nerve dysfunction. Underlying neoplasia was excluded.

Hybrid tumor of the parotid gland: a case report and review of the literature.

The parotid gland is the most common location of benign neoplasms affecting major salivary glands. Hybrid tumors are very rare tumor entities which are composed of two different tumor types, each of which conforms to an exactly defined tumor category. The tumor entities of a hybrid tumor are not separated but have an identical origin within the same topographical area. This report describes a 51-year-old male with three neoplasms occurring within a single parotid gland tumor. The clinical, radiological, and histologic features are described in addition to a review of the literature.

High-frequency ultrasound in parotid gland disease.

Parotid gland is involved in many inflammatory and neoplastic conditions. Many a times, it is difficult to ascertain the type of swelling by clinical examination. The anatomy and various abnormalities of the glands are very easily visualized by high-frequency ultrasound. Ultrasound can confirm the presence of the mass with sensitivity up to 100%. It can demonstrate whether a lesion is located in the parotid gland or outside. It can help in differentiating benign from malignant neoplasms and local staging of the mass in malignant lesions. In addition, ultrasound can identify those entities that

First branchial cleft cysts presenting as parotid tumors.

Masses of the parotid gland region can be caused by a variety of different conditions, most commonly neoplasms of a benign or malignant nature. A rare cause for parotid tumors is the embryonologic remnant of first branchial cleft cysts. We reviewed branchial cysts for a 10-year period at the three teaching hospitals in Akron, OH. First branchial cleft cysts, or parotid lympho-epithelial cysts, were found to be a very rare condition presenting as parotid tumors. The surgeon should always be aware of these cysts as a possibility in the differential diagnosis of parotid masses in the infant and a

Papillary oncocytic cystadenoma of the parotid glands: a report of 2 cases with varied cytologic features.

BACKGROUND: Papillary cystadenoma is a rare salivary gland neoplasm, and oncocytic change can be focal or marked. Papillary oncocytic cystadenoma has been reported mainly in the minor salivary glands and occasionally in the parotid glands. The cytologic features vary. CASES: A 26-year-old female presented with a 2.4-cm, cystic right parotid gland mass present for 4 months. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) showed cellular smears with sheets of oncocytic cells and some with micropapillary architecture. The diagnosis ofa neoplasm was rendered and excisional biopsy recommended. Oncocytic neoplasm was

Extracapsular dissection of pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland through minimal preauricular and retroauricular incisions in children.

We evaluate treatment outcomes in children with benign parotid neoplasms who underwent extracapsular dissection of the tumor using minimal incisions. Nine pediatric patients (4 boys and 5 girls) with pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland were treated with extracapsular dissection via preauricular and retroauricular incisions. The mean age of the patients at the time of surgery was 9.4 years. The size of the tumors ranged from 1.5 × 1.4 to 3.5 × 3.0 cm. Seven tumors were located in the superficial lobe of the parotid gland and 2 were located in the deep lobe. All histologically confirmed cas

Beyond the Ordinary: Giant Parotid Oncocytoma and the Complexity of Diagnosis.

Parotid oncocytoma is a rare benign salivary gland tumor, often misdiagnosed due to overlapping features with other parotid neoplasms. We present the case of an 87-year-old male with a progressively enlarging right parotid mass, confirmed as oncocytoma through imaging and histopathological analysis. The excised oncocytoma measured approximately 9 cm in its greatest dimension, making it one of the largest parotid oncocytomas reported in the literature to date. This case highlights the diagnostic challenges associated with parotid oncocytomas, the limitations of fine-needle aspiration, and the i

Salivary gland neoplasms in Lagos, Nigeria.

This 14 year retrospective clinico-statistical analysis of 237 salivary gland neoplasms in Lagos, Nigeria, was undertaken with a view to providing further insights into the presentation of this disease in Africans. These neoplasms constituted 10.0% of all head and neck neoplasms, and were most frequently situated at the parotid gland (32.1%), the palate (24.9%) and the submandibular gland (19.4%). While parotid squamous cell carcinoma affected more males (41.2%) than females (4.7%) (P = 0.03); parotid mucoepidermoid carcinoma affected more females (53.3%) than males (11.8%) (P = 0.0149). Parotid Gland Tumors and the Facial Nerve.

Various types of parotid gland tumors are discussed from nonneoplastic to both benign and malignant neoplasms. The anatomic relationship of the facial nerve is discussed as it exits the stylomastoid foramen and courses through the parotid gland. The effect of certain tumors on facial nerve function is also characterized. Details on which types of parotid tumors are more likely to affect facial nerve function and different prognostic predictors of return to function are evaluated. In addition, the prognostic value of tumor size and histologic type of parotid tumor is included.

Diagnosis and treatment of epithelial salivary gland tumours in children and adolescents.

In a series of 2,871 epithelial salivary gland neoplasms managed in the Peking University School of Stomatology between 1974 and 1999, 86 arose in children <16 years of age (52 parotid, 12 submandibular gland, 2 sublingual gland, and 20 minor salivary gland). Considerable delay was encountered in diagnosis (benign 24 months and malignant 16 months). In this group of children, 46 tumours (53%) proved to be malignant, with an incidence in the parotid, submandibular, sublingual, and minor salivary glands of 31/52 (60%), 2/12, 0/2, and 13/20 (65%), respectively. Sixty-six of 86 neoplasms (77%) occ

Clinicopathological features of incidental parotid lesions.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to determine the histopathological spectrum and risk of primary malignancy of asymptomatic parotid lesions incidentally discovered on cross-sectional imaging. METHODS: Over a 10-year period, 154 patients underwent 163 ultrasound-guided parotid lesion biopsies at our institution. This retrospective chart review included 89 lesions in 87 patients with asymptomatic parotid lesions discovered on cross-sectional imaging studies performed for unrelated clinical indications. The histopathologic findings of all sampled lesions were reviewed. We evaluated the p

Metastatic atypical meningioma to the parotid gland - A cytopathological correlation.

The tumors involving the parotid gland are mainly primary, with metastatic lesions comprising only 5% of malignant salivary gland neoplasms. We are presenting a rare case of metastatic meningioma to the parotid in a 51-year-old male with a past medical history of recurrent atypical meningioma involving the frontal lobe. For the past 1.5 years, routine imaging showed parotid lesions with interval growth including a 2.0 cm dominant tender preauricular parotid mass. The chronicity and the number of lesions made malignancy unlikely. The differential diagnosis included non-specific lesions such as

Malignant mucoepidermoid tumor arising in the accessory parotid gland: a case report.

PURPOSE: The head and neck surgeon's fascination with parotid surgery arises from the gland's spectrum of histopathological presentations, as well as the diversity of its morphological features. A mass arising in the mid-cheek region may often be overlooked as a rare accessory lobe parotid neoplasm. This report serves to revisit the topic of accessory parotid gland neoplasms to emphasize proper management, particularly the surgical aspects, so that consequences of salivary fistula, facial nerve paralysis, and recurrence are avoided. CASE REPORT: We report a case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma wh

Parotid gland involvement as an initial presentation of papillary thyroid carcinoma.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most differentiated malignant thyroid neoplasm. Local metastases of PTC commonly occur in the regional lymph nodes, while distant metastases are mainly to the lung and bone. The case of a patient with PTC who presented with swelling of the parotid gland and neck, mimicking a primary parotid neoplasm, is presented herein. This case is unique due to the unexpected initial presentation of PTC with no signs of disease in the thyroid gland.

Label-free blood serum detection by using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and support vector machine for the preoperative diagnosis of parotid gland tumors.

BACKGROUND: It is difficult for the parotid gland neoplasms to make an accurate preoperative diagnosis due to the restriction of biopsy in the parotid gland neoplasms. The aim of this study is to apply the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) method for the blood serum biochemical detection and use the support vector machine for the analysis in order to develop a simple but accurate blood serum detection for preoperative diagnosis of the parotid gland neoplasms. METHODS: The blood serums were collected from four groups: the patients with pleomorphic adenoma, the patients with Warthin's

Is There a Role for PET/CT Parameters to Characterize Benign, Malignant, and Metastatic Parotid Tumors?

OBJECTIVE: Assessment of benign and malignant lesions of the parotid gland, including metastatic lesions, is challenging with current imaging methods. Fluorine-18 FDG PET/CT is a noninvasive imaging modality that provides both anatomic and metabolic information. Semiquantitative data obtained from PET/CT, also known as PET/CT parameters, are maximum, mean, or peak standardized uptake values (SUVs); metabolic tumor volume; total lesion glycolysis; standardized added metabolic activity; and normalized standardized added metabolic activity. Our aim was to determine whether FDG PET/CT parameters c
