Study of human adult parotid duct in the area of penetration through buccinator muscle and their functional relationship as a sphincter.

The adult human parotid duct is roughly 6-8 cm long. From the parotid gland, parotid duct traverses through masseter muscle, penetrates through buccinator muscle, and opens into the oral cavity. This unique form of the parotid duct is likely correlated with the function of the duct, directly affected by the movement of the buccinator muscle during mastication and swallowing. Histological structure of the duct is known to be different in each region, and details of smooth muscle present in the parotid duct are mostly unclear. In this study, we conducted SEM and histological observations of the

Pneumoparotid: a rare cause of parotid swelling in a 7-year-old child.

PROBLEMS/OBJECTIVES: Pneumoparotid is a rare condition in which air is insufflated through Stensen's duct into the parotid gland. This causes mostly painless swelling in the parotid region. CASE REPORT: We report on a 7-year old girl presenting with painless unilateral swelling of the left parotid region, present for one month. Computer tomography showed the presence of air in the left parotid gland and in both the left and right Stensen's duct. A thorough history revealed the girl was insufflating the parotid glands intentionally as a response to stress. The patient was comforted and instruc

Huge lipoma of the right parotid gland: Case report and review of 42 cases.

Lipomas are rarely found in the parotid gland region. Because of their rarity at this site, they are not often considered in the differential diagnosis of parotid tumors. The parotid lipoma is a slowly growing, asymptomatic, freely movable, soft mass. Preoperative diagnosis is generally difficult. We present a case of a slowly enlarging mass of the parotid region in a 44-year-old man that proved to be a lipomatous tumor of the parotid gland. We also review 42 other cases from the literature. Our patient's huge tumor was located in the superficial lobe of the gland, and a parotidectomy with pre

Extracranial metastasis from a frontal embryonal tumor to the parotid: Cytomorphologic features of a rare occurrence.

Embryonal tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) are rare and aggressive malignancies accounting for less than 1% of all central nervous system tumors. The occurrence of metastasis to extracranial sites, especially the parotid region, is highly uncommon. We present a rare case of metastatic frontal embryonal tumor (ET) in the parotid region. A 9-year-old boy presented with a progressively enlarging left parotid mass. Past history revealed that he was a known case of a frontal lobe embryonal tumor. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) combined with immunocytochemistry from the parotid rev

Cystic teratoma of the parotid gland: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Teratoma is a common tumor, but rarely occurs in the parotid region. Only nine cases have been reported in the current literature. Although it is generally detected in infancy or childhood, it is commonly asymptomatic. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have important roles in the diagnosis of teratoma. CASE SUMMARY: A 36-year-old man developed a lump located below the left auricular lobule 3 years ago. Physical examination revealed a nearly-circular tumor in the left parotid gland region with a defined border, firm texture, and significant movement. Cal

Parotidectomy--Anatomical considerations.

The parotid glands are paired major salivary glands and are located in the preauricular region. Parotidectomy is a surgical procedure that entails removal of all or a portion of the parotid gland. The most common indications for this operative procedure are a neoplasm of the parotid gland or metastases to parotid lymph nodes. An intimate knowledge of the anatomy of the parotid gland and related structures is necessary for the performance of safe and successful parotid surgery. This report will discuss the anatomy of the parotid gland as it pertains to parotid surgery and the avoidance of compl

The Rare Cases of Parotid Gland Arteriovenous Malformations.

Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) results from errors in vascular development during embryogenesis; absent capillary beds lead to shunting directly from the arterial to venous circulation. Although it is common in the head and neck region, AVMs located in the parotid gland are quite rare. Here, we report two cases of arteriovenous malformation of the parotid gland that presented to our out-patient setup with swelling in the parotid region and were diagnosed as arteriovenous malformation on histopathological study after surgical resection.

[Abscess of the parotid gland].

Inflammatory processes developing in the region of parotid gland can be specific or non-specific. Non-specific inflammation of bacterial or viral origin, which almost always are secondary to inflammatory processes in the region of oral cavity and pharynx, can be caused by presence of sialoliths in parotid gland or in the excretory duct. In the paper we presented 11 patients treated for the reason of parotid gland abscesses. Etiology, the course of the disease, and the method of treatment were analyzed.

Management of a parotid sialocele in a young patient: case report and literature review.

Sialocele is a subcutaneous cavity containing saliva, caused by trauma or infection in the parotid gland parenchyma, laceration of the parotid duct or ductal stenosis with subsequent dilatation. It is characterized by an asymptomatic soft and mobile swelling on the parotid region. Imaging studies are useful and help establishing the diagnosis, such as sialography, ultrasonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. This paper describes a recurrent case of a parotid sialocele in a young female patient. She presented a 6 cm x 5 cm swelling on the left parotid region. The ultraso

Parotid Gland Stem Cell Sparing Radiation Therapy for Patients With Head and Neck Cancer: A Double-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: Radiation therapy for head and neck cancer frequently leads to salivary gland damage and subsequent xerostomia. The radiation response of the parotid glands of rats, mice, and patients critically depends on dose to parotid gland stem cells, mainly located in the gland's main ducts (stem cell rich [SCR] region). Therefore, this double-blind randomized controlled trial aimed to test the hypothesis that parotid gland stem cell sparing radiation therapy preserves parotid gland function better than currently used whole parotid gland sparing radiation therapy. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patien

Simultaneous nasopharyngeal and parotid gland Warthin's tumour: a case report.

Herein, a rare case of synchronous cystoadenolymphoma (Warthin's tumour) of the right parotid gland and the nasopharyngeal space is described. Although Warthin's tumour (WT) of the parotid gland is a common benign pathology, the occurrence of extra-parotid cystoadenolymphoma is rare. Extra-parotid WT have been mainly localised in the submandibular gland, periparotid region and occasionally in other sites, such as the oral cavity, hard palate and nasopharynx. The simultaneous occurrence of an intra-parotid and extra-parotid WT localisation, as in the case presented, is extremely uncommon.

Parotid Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma Radiologically Mimicking a Benign Postauricular Epidermoid Cyst: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland may occasionally present with cyst-like or deceptively benign radiologic features, even when the final histopathological architecture is predominantly solid. Diagnostic difficulty increases when the lesion appears separated from the parotid gland and mimics a superficial postauricular cyst. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 49-year-old patient presenting with a painful left postauricular swelling associated with ipsilateral House-Brackmann grade III peripheral facial paralysis. Ultrasound and MRI suggested a well-circumscribed

Transdermal scopolamine in the management of postparotidectomy salivary fistula.

Parotid fistula represents an uncommon complication in parotid surgery. Its early recognition contributes to successful management. The condition is distressing for both the patient and the surgeon, since conservative and operative treatment frequently fail. There is no consensus on the optimal management of parotid gland fistula. The aim of this study is to describe a new, simple procedure in the treatment of this condition using transdermal scopolamine. We report 3 cases of salivary fistulae occurring after parotidectomy. The patients were admitted to our department with swelling in the paro

Metastasis of basal cell carcinoma from the scalp to the parotid gland and lungs.

An elderly male patient with a history of basal cell carcinoma (BCC), which was excised from the right temple in 2013, presented in 2021 with swelling in the right parotid region. This led to a diagnosis of metastatic BCC in the parotid gland. He consequently underwent a right partial parotidectomy and neck dissection with adjuvant radiotherapy. In 2024, the patient was represented with a firm swelling in the right parotid region, and further imaging revealed a new lung lesion. He subsequently underwent a right video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery lower lobe wedge resection for the lung lesion

Sequelae of a Rare Case of Penetrating Parotid Gland Injury: Ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance Imaging Features.

Parotid gland trauma is a rare condition due to the anatomical location of the parotid gland. Imaging of the parotid gland trauma is restricted to ultrasound (US), sialogram, and computed tomography scans in the published literature. We present a case of penetrating parotid gland injury caused by a fishhook. The foreign object was removed under local anesthesia and the patient was managed conservatively with antibiotics and tetanus toxoid vaccine. A swelling appeared in the left parotid region after two weeks that was diagnosed using US and magnetic resonance imaging as granulation tissue form
