Repair of partial-thickness rotator cuff tears: a biomechanical analysis of footprint contact pressure and strength in an ovine model.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether transtendon repair by use of a novel small-diameter knotless anchor showed enhanced mechanical properties compared with tear completion and repair. METHODS: Articular-sided partial-thickness tears were created ex vivo in the infraspinatus of 24 ovine shoulders. The specimens were randomized into 4 groups of 6 each: (1) no repair, (2) transtendon repair, (3) completion of tear with tension-band single-row repair, and (4) completion of tear with double-row repair. Footprint contact pressure and ultimate load to failure were measured in

[Transcutaneous measurement of oxygen partial pressure in the preoperative determination of the amputation level in the arterial occlusive disease of the lower extremity].

For major limb amputation in patients with occlusive arterial disease, the peripheral amputation level (at the knee or below the knee) is the most important factor in obtaining an optimal functional result and reducing the relatively high operative mortality of above knee amputation. In the study presented, measurement of transcutaneous oxygen tension has proved to be a helpful tool in realizing this therapeutical principle. Comparison with another group of amputees without pO2 measurement indicated that the ratio of above-knee to below-knee amputation could be changed from 2:1 to 1:2. The red

Partial pressure of carbon dioxide/pH interaction and its association with mortality among patients mechanically ventilated in the emergency department.

OBJECTIVES: There is currently conflicting data as to the effects of hypercapnia on clinical outcomes among mechanically ventilated patients in the emergency department (ED). These conflicting results may be explained by the degree of acidosis. We sought to test the hypothesis that hypercapnia is associated with increased in-hospital mortality and decreased ventilator-free days at lower pH, but associated with decreased in-hospital mortality and increased ventilator-free days at higher pH, among patients requiring mechanical ventilation in the emergency department (ED). METHODS: Secondary ana

Effects of aerobic exercise on ambulatory blood pressure responses to acute partial sleep deprivation: impact of chronotype and sleep quality.

Blood pressure (BP) follows a circadian rhythm intertwined with the sleep-wake cycle. Acute partial sleep deprivation (PSD; sleep ≤ 6 h) can increase BP, associated with increased cardiovascular risk. Acute exercise can reduce BP for up to 24 h, a phenomenon termed postexercise hypotension. The present study tested whether aerobic exercise could mitigate the augmented 24-h ambulatory BP caused by acute PSD. Twenty-four young otherwise healthy adults (22 ± 3 yr; 14 females; self-reported chronotypes: 6 early/10 intermediate/8 late; Pittsburgh sleep quality index: 17 good/7 poor sleepers) comple

Dynamic pressure-flow curve analysis of the native heart and left ventricular assist device for full and partial bypass conditions.

BACKGROUND: During left ventricular assist device (LVAD) support, the external work performed by the native heart combines with the work performed by the rotary LVAD to provide cyclic flow through the LVAD and, in some conditions, through the aortic valve. In this study, a balance of external work was developed and validated for both full and partial bypass conditions that includes valve opening and aortic compliance. METHODS: The theory assumes a steady-state contribution of external work from the rotary LVAD and a dynamic portion from the heart. Cyclic flow may be ejected through either the

Developing a Customized Perfusion Bioreactor Prototype with Controlled Positional Variability in Oxygen Partial Pressure for Bone and Cartilage Tissue Engineering.

Skeletal development is a multistep process that involves the complex interplay of multiple cell types at different stages of development. Besides biochemical and physical cues, oxygen tension also plays a pivotal role in influencing cell fate during skeletal development. At physiological conditions, bone cells generally reside in a relatively oxygenated environment whereas chondrocytes reside in a hypoxic environment. However, it is technically challenging to achieve such defined, yet diverse oxygen distribution on traditional in vitro cultivation platforms. Instead, engineered osteochondral

Does donor arterial partial pressure of oxygen affect outcomes after lung transplantation? A review of more than 12,000 lung transplants.

INTRODUCTION: In lung transplantation (LTx), the arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO(2)) is traditionally regarded as critical information for assessment of donor lung function. Each center sets its own thresholds; by convention, a donor PaO(2) of less than 300 mm Hg has been considered disqualifying. Limited literature exists to support such a practice. We analyzed all LTxs performed in the United States over a 9-year period to assess the effect of donor PaO(2) on graft survival. METHODS: The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) database was queried for LTx (January 2000-November 200

Compression Suture Staple Repair of Simulated Gluteus Medius Partial Tendon Tears Provides Increased Contact Pressure Compared With Stepwise Bridged Repair.

PURPOSE: To examine the contact mechanics of 2 different suture anchor configuration constructs for gluteus medius repair in partial-thickness tears and to define an optimal distance for anchor placement in a biomechanical model. METHODS: Trochanteric bone was simulated using polyurethane foam blocks, and a polyurethane rubber was used as a surrogate for the gluteus medius tendon tissue. As the rubber remained partially attached to the foam, this design simulated a partial-thickness tear without any retraction of the tendon tissue. A pressure sensor was used to collect contact data. Arterial CO2 partial pressure is a key modulator of active muscle hypoperfusion mediated by diving reflex in exercising young adults.

Voluntary apnea markedly attenuates exercise-induced increases in active muscle blood flow, a response known as the diving reflex, which is thought to preserve oxygen within the body. However, the underlying mechanisms of this response remain unknown. Since voluntary apnea elevates arterial CO2 partial pressure, which can induce vasoconstriction in active muscles during exercise, we hypothesized that arterial CO2 partial pressure modulates diving reflex-related regulation of active muscle blood flow. Fourteen young adults (1 female) performed maximal-duration breath-holding during a dynamic tw

Cerebrospinal Fluid Dynamics and Partial Pressure of Carbon Dioxide as Prognostic Indicators in Hypoxic-Ischemic Brain Injury Following Cardiac Arrest.

Changes in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics can have adverse effects on neuronal function. We hypothesized that patients with hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HIBI) showing poor neurological outcomes after cardiac arrest (CA) would exhibit changes in CSF dynamics, leading to abnormalities in gas diffusion within the CSF. Therefore, we investigated the prognostic value of the CSF partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PcsfCO2) in CA survivors who underwent targeted temperature management (TTM). We retrospectively analyzed the 6-month neurological outcomes, CSF, and arterial blood gas parameters of

Simple model of pulmonary hypertension secondary to left heart pressure overload induced by partial intravascular occlusion of the ascending aorta.

Pulmonary hypertension is a group of diseases characterized by elevated pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance with significant morbidity and mortality. The most prevalent type is pulmonary hypertension secondary to left heart disease (PH-LHD). The available experimental models of PH-LHD use partial pulmonary clamping by technically nontrivial open-chest surgery with lengthy recovery. We present a simple model in which the reduction of the cross-sectional area of the ascending aorta is achieved not by external clamping but by partial intravascular obstruction without openi

Effects of different fertilization rates on growth, yield, quality and partial factor productivity of tomato under non-pressure gravity irrigation.

To select the optimum fertilizer application under specific irrigation levels and to provide a reliable fertigation system for tomato plants, an experiment was conducted by using a microporous membrane for water-fertilizer integration under non-pressure gravity. A compound fertilizer (N:P2O5:K2O, 18:7:20) was adopted for topdressing at four levels, 1290 kg/ha, 1140 kg/ha, 990 kg/ha, and 840 kg/ha, and the locally recommended level of 1875 kg/ha was used as the control to explore the effects of different fertilizer application rates on growth, nutrient distribution, quality, yield, and partial

[Cutaneous microcirculation in pretibial necrobiosis lipoidica. Comparative laser Doppler flowmetry and oxygen partial pressure determinations in patients and healthy probands].

Necrobiosis lipoidica (NL) is a chronic, skin disease usually localized pretibially and often associated with diabetes mellitus. Primary vascular disturbances are considered pathogenetic for NL. In order to determine microcirculatory alterations in "idiopathic" NL linked with neither arterial hypertension nor diabetes mellitus, we performed simultaneous measurements of laser-Doppler flux (LDF) and oxygen tension (pcuO2) in 10 non-diabetic patients with NL and in 10 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers. We examined the centre of the pretibial NL plaque, its border and the non-affected skin o

Nonequilibrium steady-state differences in partial pressure of CO 2 and in concentration of weak acids and bases between blood and tissue.

Several investigators have demonstrated that under conditions where little or no gas exchange occurs across the alveolar capillary membrane the PCO(2) is higher in the alveolus than in the mixed venous blood, whereas there are no PO(2) differences. Gurtner et al. have explained the DeltaPCO(2) by a model in which H(+) dissociation of proteins due to an electrical field caused by a negatively charged capillary wall (Wien effect) sets up an intracapillary PCO(2) difference between wall and bulk phase which is maintained by blood flow. The model is not specific for CO(2) and predicts that weak ac

The application of partial pressure of oxygen adjusted indirect Fick method in vasoreactivity testing by inhaling oxygen in congenital heart disease.

The influence of partial pressure of oxygen (pO2) is often overlooked during vasoreactivity testing by inhaling oxygen in congenital heart diseases (CHD). This study aims to evaluate the influence of pO2 on hemodynamic data. Patients with simple CHDs and suspected pulmonary arterial hypertension undergoing right heart catheterization including vasoreactivity testing by inhaling O2 were consecutively enrolled from June 2023 to March 2025. Patients with an arterial O2 saturation below 98% after inhaling O2 were excluded. Cardiac output was calculated using indirect Fick method, where blood O2 co

The Influence of Combined Physical Therapy Procedures on Oxygen Partial Pressure in Tissues Surrounding Ulcer in Patients With Venous Leg Ulcers.

Venous ulcers in lower legs remain a profound treatment problem in contemporary medicine. Proper healing requires, among other things, sufficient blood supply and provision of suitable amount of oxygen to the treated tissues. The aim of the study was to assess the influence of combined physical therapy applied in patients with chronic venous leg ulcers on the oxygen partial pressure values. Fifty-four patients (25 females and 29 males), in the age range of 38 to 89 years with chronic venous leg ulcers, underwent a cycle of 15 procedures with the use of Laserobaria-S device. During a procedure,

Effects of zinc porphyrin and zinc phthalocyanine derivatives in photodynamic anticancer therapy under different partial pressures of oxygen in vitro.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is gradually becoming an alternative method in the treatment of several diseases. Here, we investigated the role of oxygen in photodynamically treated cervical cancer cells (HeLa). The effect of PDT on HeLa cells was assessed by exposing cultured cells to disulphonated zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPcS2) and tetrasulphonated zinc tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnTPPS4). Fluorescence microscopy revealed their different localizations within the cells. ZnTPPS4 seems to be mostly limited to the cytosol and lysosomes, whereas ZnPcS2 is most likely predominantly attached to membrane struc

Partial splenic embolization is superior to intravenous somatostatin for decreasing portal pressure in cirrhotic patients: a dynamic self-controlled cohort study.

AIMS: The efficacy of somatostatin in altering splanchnic hemodynamics in cirrhotic portal hypertension is still controversial. We aimed to establish the dynamic effect of somatostatin on portal pressure in cirrhotic patients and compared its effect with Partial Splenic Embolization (PSE). METHODS: Eighteen patients with cirrhotic portal hypertension were prospectively recruited. The wedged hepatic venous pressure (WHVP) and free hepatic venous pressure (FHVP) were repeatedly measured at baseline, 1-, 5-, 10- and 20-min after initiating somatostatin infusion. After somatostatin infusion cessa
