OBJECTIVE: Since its casual discovery and implication as a human pathogen that provokes transitory aplastic crises and infectious erythema, the B19 parvovirus has been related to a wide spectrum of diseases. To better understand this clinical diversity, we reviewed the cases of a serology positive infants admitted to the hospital.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From January 1992 to June 1995, all clinical charts were reviewed and we obtained 15 patients that had positive IgM antibodies by immunoenzyme assay.
RESULTS: The mean age was 12.2 months. No sex differences were seen. The incidence was higher

BACKGROUND: The long-term consequences of parvovirus B19 infection in transfusion recipients are not known, and thus the value of B19 screening of blood donors remains unresolved. Hemophiliacs, at risk for B19 through their chronic exposure to clotting factor concentrates, have frequent, close medical follow-up and thereby constitute an ideal group in which to study the hematologic sequelae of B19 infection.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect B19 IgG and IgM and the polymerase chain reaction was used to detect B19 DNA in frozen, stored plasma sam

BACKGROUND: Parvovirus infection has been associated with the development of nonimmune hydrops fetalis in pregnancy. This report describes a twin pregnancy in which one fetus was affected by parvovirus B19 and the other was not.
CASE: A 35-year-old woman was found to have a twin gestation at genetic amniocentesis. Subsequent ultrasound at 18 weeks showed that twin B had evidence of hydrops fetalis. Serum from the mother tested positive for parvovirus B19 immunoglobulin (Ig) G and IgM. Cultured amniotic fluid from twin B was subsequently found to be positive for parvovirus B19. At 20 weeks' ge

In a 10-year retrospective study we examined the incidence of parvovirus B19 (B19)-related hydrops fetalis in fetal autopsies (n = 1,299) carried out between 1982 and 1991. Intrauterine death had occurred in 399 cases (30.7%); in 42 (10.5%) of these hydrops fetalis was diagnosed. Of these 42 hydropic fetuses, parvovirus B19 infection was identified in 6 (14.3%) cases by the presence of typical erythroblastic nuclear inclusions in hematoxylin-eosin stained tissue and the diagnosis was confirmed by in situ hybridization using a Digoxigenin-labelled B19 DNA probe. The study shows that the overall

Human parvovirus B19 is a recently recognized cause of hydrops fetalis. It is a small, single-stranded DNA virus, which preferentially infects late erythroid precursors and produces red blood cell (RBC) aplasia, fetal anemia, and cardiac failure. Infection is accompanied by characteristic intranuclear inclusions in fixed and circulating RBC precursors. These inclusions have been shown to contain virus particles by electron microscopy and in situ hybridization. Infection of the fetus, mother, and newborn infant can be diagnosed by serological and molecular methods selected to match the stage of

Human Parvovirus (HPV) is a DNA virus which causes the aplastic rises in the chronic hemolytic anemias. HPV IgG was found positive in the newborns with CMV and Rubella negative congenital intrauterine infection. Recently, it was reported that nonimmunologic hydrops fetalis caused by HPV Now, HPV (especially B 19) is a well known virus which takes significant place in the public health and pediatrics.

Background. Parvovirus B19 (B19V) is a common finding in endomyocardial biopsy specimens from myocarditis and dilated cardiomyopathy patients. However, current understanding of how B19V is contributing to cardiac damage is rather limited due to the lack of appropriate mice models. In this work we demonstrate that immunization of BALB/c mice with the major immunogenic determinant of B19V located in the unique sequence of capsid protein VP1 (VP1u) is an adequate model to study B19V associated heart damage. Methods and Results. We immunized mice in the experimental group with recombinant VP1u; im

Infection with human parvovirus B19 is manifested as erythema infectiosum, transient aplastic crisis, or hydrops fetalis. Rheumatic manifestations include arthropathy and various vasculitic syndromes. Isolated Raynaud's phenomenon due to parvovirus B19 has never been described. We report on 2 previously healthy sisters with new-onset Raynaud's phenomenon accompanied by severe generalized polyarthralgia. A full workup was negative, except serology for parvovirus B19, which was positive. All symptoms gradually subsided within 3-5 months, and no recurrence has been noted during the 3 years since

Muscovy duck parvovirus (MDPV) and Goose parvovirus (GPV) are highly contagious waterfowl viruses causing significant harm to the poultry industry. This study designed primers and probes targeting the non-structural genomic region of MDPV and GPV, optimizing amplification for both quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and duplex crystal digital polymerase chain reaction (dPCR). The resulting duplex crystal dPCR method showed strong specificity, detecting MDPV and GPV without cross-reactivity with other waterfowl viruses. Sensitivity tests revealed that the lower detection limit for qPC

Parvovirus B19 infection can closely mimic flares of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, posing diagnostic challenges. We report a case of a 50-year-old man with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis who presented with acute symmetrical polyarthropathy, a transient rash, and profound anaemia. Initially managed as a rheumatoid flare, further evaluation revealed severe normocytic anaemia with reticulocytopenia. Bone marrow aspiration demonstrated pure red cell aplasia with characteristic giant proerythroblasts containing intranuclear inclusions. Parvovirus B19 DNA was detected by polym

Human parvovirus B19 (B19V) is well known for its infectivity. However, the risk for communicability to previously unexposed healthcare professionals is controversial. We report here a small outbreak of B19V infection among physicians and family members in an adult rheumatology practice that occurred after providing care for a patient with B19V arthropathy. As B19V-infected patients who demonstrate findings of erythema infectiosum or viral arthritis are generally beyond the period of transmissability, strict handwashing and droplet precautions remain imperative when there is contact with poten

Human parvovirus B19 represents the most common etiology of myocarditis in the pediatric population. Although it usually causes a benign exanthematic viral infection, parvovirus B19 may also present as disseminated disease with tropism for the myocardium, causing heart failure with high mortality. We present the case of a 2-year-old patient with fulminating acute myocarditis in whom the histological, immunophenotypic, and microbiological findings in necropsy showed multiorgan involvement caused by parvovirus B19. The autopsy revealed changes due to infection with parvovirus B19 as well as hypo

A novel parvovirus was discovered recently in the brain of a harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) with chronic meningo-encephalitis. Phylogenetic analysis of this virus indicated that it belongs to the genus Erythroparvovirus, to which also human parvovirus B19 belongs. In the present study, the prevalence, genetic diversity and clinical relevance of seal parvovirus (SePV) infections was evaluated in both harbor and grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) that lived in Northwestern European coastal waters from 1988 to 2014. To this end, serum and tissue samples collected from seals were tested for the presenc

Erythema infectiosum is the main manifestation of human parvovirus B19 infections. Further B19-related diseases commonly associated with the acute infection are flue-like symptoms, transient aplastic crisis, transient arthralgias, leukopenia and thrombocytopenia, spontaneous abortion and hydrops fetalis in pregnant women. Hepatitis, myocarditis, meningitis, encephalitis as well as pure red cell anemia may occur occasionally. In addition parvovirus B19 infections have been frequently described as cause or trigger of various forms of autoimmune diseases affecting all blood cell lines, joints, co

Human parvovirus B19 is a common cause of benign erythema infectiosum (fifth disease) in otherwise healthy children. Immunocompromized patients are at risk of developing chronic infections leading to chronic hyporegenerative anemia. We report the case of a nine-year-old boy who presented five days after renal transplantation with seizures and signs of encephalitis on MRI. The clinical course was characterized by anemia and seroconversion for parvovirus B19 accompanied by a high viral load (>10(9) copies per milliliter). A transfusion of red blood cells that the patient required after transplan

A previously healthy 9 year old girl developed nephrotic syndrome with hypertension, microhematuria and normal renal function. The patient evolved as steroid resistant nephrotic syndrome whose initial renal biopsy was consistent with diffuse proliferative mesangial glomerulonephritis with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. At the time of cyclophosphamide and prednisone treatment, she developed a prolonged febrile syndrome. She also had severe anemia following an aplastic crisis induced by human parvovirus B19 infection and acute renal failure secondary to a severe tubulointersticial disease.

BACKGROUND: Enteroviruses (EVs) and adenoviruses (ADVs) have been considered common causes of myocarditis and dilated cardiomyopathy. In the present study, we report on the association of parvovirus B19 (PVB19) genomes in the clinical setting of acute myocarditis.
METHODS AND RESULTS: This study included 24 consecutive patients admitted to our hospital within 24 hours after onset of chest pain. Acute myocardial infarction had been excluded in all patients by coronary angiography. Endomyocardial biopsies were analyzed by nested polymerase chain reaction/reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain r

Since its discovery, human parvovirus B19 has been linked with a broad spectrum of clinical syndromes. An aetiological role for the virus has been confirmed in erythema infectiosum, transient aplastic crisis, persistent infection manifesting as pure red cell aplasia in immunocompromised persons, non-immune hydrops fetalis and arthritis. Less commonly recognised, but receiving increasing attention recently, are the neurological manifestations, a variety of which have been described in patients with either clinically diagnosed or laboratory confirmed B19 infection. The purpose of this review is
