Spreading of Pasteurella multocida Infection in a Pet Rabbit Breeding and Possible Implications on Healed Bunnies.

The number of pets such as dogs, cats, rabbits, and parrots has increased in European families. Social benefits to owners such as decreasing feelings of loneliness and anxiety are provided by pets which are also used in Animal-assisted Therapy (AAT). Nevertheless, human-animal interactions are also associated with health problems including allergies, asthma, and zoonosis. Rabbits may carry potential pathogens for humans. One of the most common bacteria that colonizes the oro-pharynx and the upper respiratory tract of rabbits is Pasteurella (P.) multocida. Transmission of the infection to human

Human Pasteurella multocida Infection with Likely Zoonotic Transmission from a Pet Dog, Spain.

We report a case of urinary tract infection caused by an unusual genotype (sequence type 211) of Pasteurella multocida associated with human infection. Molecular genetic analysis of P. multocida isolates obtained from the human patient and his pet strongly suggests a zoonotic transmission of this bacterium.

A Chronic Respiratory Pasteurella multocida Infection Is Well-Controlled by Long-Term Macrolide Therapy.

A 57-year-old woman with severe bronchiectasis frequently received antibiotics, including penicillin, for acute exacerbations due to Pasteurella multocida. Although the bacteria showed a decrease in antibiotic susceptibility, her symptoms and X-ray findings became stable, and severe exacerbations were not observed for the last few years after a low-dose erythromycin treatment was started. The development of a respiratory infection with Pasteurella multocida is relatively uncommon, but it can be controlled by immunomodulation which is associated with long-term macrolide therapy.

Expression of the dermonecrotic toxin by Bordetella bronchiseptica is not necessary for predisposing to infection with toxigenic Pasteurella multocida.

This experiment was designed to determine whether a Bordetella bronchiseptica mutant that does not produce dermonecrotic toxin (DNT) is still capable of predisposing pigs to infection with toxigenic Pasteurella multocida. Three groups of pigs were initially inoculated intranasally with a wild type B. bronchiseptica that produces DNT, an isogenic mutant of B. bronchiseptica that does not produce DNT, or PBS. All pigs were then challenged intranasally with a toxigenic strain of P. multocida 4 days later. P. multocida was recovered infrequently and in low numbers from pigs initially inoculated wi

The effect of Pasteurella haemolytica A2 infection on phagocytosis efficiency of caprine broncho-alveolar macrophages.

An experiment was designed to study the in vivo effect of Pasteurella haemolytica A2 infection on the phagocytosis activity of caprine broncho-alveolar macrophages and the extent of pneumonic lesions. Twelve healthy local Kacang goats, about 7 months of age, were divided into two groups of six. Goats in group 1 were inoculated intratracheally with 4 ml inoculum containing 2.8 x 10(9) colony-forming units (CFU)/ml of Staphylococcus aureus. Goats in group 2 were inoculated intratracheally with 4 ml of inoculum containing 9.5 x 10(8) CFU/ml of Pasteurella haemolytica A2 isolated earlier from pneu

Attenuated vaccine PmCQ2Δ4555-4580 effectively protects mice against Pasteurella multocida infection.

Pasteurella multocida type A (PmA) mainly causes respiratory diseases such as pneumonia in bovines, leading to great economic losses to the breeding industry. At present, there is still no effective commercial vaccine against PmA infection. In this study, a mutant strain (PmCQ2Δ4555-4580) with brand-new phenotypes was obtained after serially passaging at 42 °C. Whole genome resequencing and PCR analysis showed that PmCQ2Δ4555-4580 missed six genes, including PmCQ2_004555, PmCQ2_004560, PmCQ2_004565, PmCQ2_004570, PmCQ2_004575, and PmCQ2_004580. Pasteurella bettyae infection requiring finger amputation due to rapid deterioration and tissue damage.

We report a case of infection of the middle finger of a 69-year-old man who visited our hospital. Pus was collected from the erythematous and swollen area of the nail cage of the left-hand middle finger and evaluated in our microbiology laboratory. Gram staining of the specimen revealed multinucleated leukocytes and abundant gram-negative bacilli. Isolated colonies were identified as Pasteurella bettyae using VITEK MS and 16 S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequencing. The patient's blood test results improved after treatment with penicillin, but the local factors affecting the finger did not impro

Pasteurella Multocida Urinary Tract Infection in a Susceptible Patient with Non-Traumatic Feline Contact.

Pasteurella multocida is a part of the normal oral flora of domestic animals. Humans can develop skin and soft tissue infections from P. multocida after traumatic animal contact, usually through bites and scratches from domestic animals. Although rare, there have been documented case reports where P. multocida has been isolated from patients even after minimal casual animal contact. Even rarer, is the isolation of P. multocida from urine. The few documented cases of urine isolation have been described in patients who have underlying medical conditions, particularly those with urologic abnormal

Pseudoaneurysm formation after Pasteurella multocida lower extremity vascular bypass graft infection.

Prosthetic vascular bypass graft infection is a rare complication requiring prompt identification and isolation of the organism. A 66-year-old woman developed left lower extremity pain and a pulsatile pseudoaneurysm 7 months after left common femoral to peroneal artery bypass with prosthetic polytetrafluoroethylene graft, requiring re-exploration and a jump graft. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from blood and tissue culture specimens, and the patient admitted to a new kitten that frequently bit her lower extremities. Treatment included intravenous administration of ertapenem for 6 weeks fo

Quantification of Pasteurella multocida in experimentally infected pigs using a real-time PCR assay.

The aim of the study was to quantify Pasteurella multocida in experimentally infected pigs using a new qPCR assay based on the sodA gene and validated with 35 P. multocida strains, including strains isolated from pigs with pneumonia, clinically healthy pigs (nasal cavities), and human infections. The specificity of the test was verified with a collection of 60 strains of bacterial species other than P. multocida. The estimated detection threshold was 10 genome equivalents per microliter. The amplification efficiency and value of the correlation coefficients were 95.5% (±3.5%) and 0.995 (±0.005

Alternative treatment of serious and mild Pasteurella multocida infection in New Zealand White rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida causes numerous economically relevant diseases in livestock including rabbits. Immunisation is only variably effective. Prophylactic antibiotics are used in some species but are contra-indicated in rabbits, due to their adverse effects on the rabbit microbiota. There is therefore a substantial need for alternative forms of infection control in rabbits; we investigated the effect of oral β-glucan on P. multocida infection in this species. RESULTS: Thirthy-five New Zealand White rabbits were randomly divided into five groups of seven animals. Three groups were

Pasteurella multocida infection in a cirrhotic patient: case report, microbiological aspects and a review of literature.

Pasteurellosis is a zoonosis often caused by cat or dog bites or scratches, or by direct exposure to their secretions. Pasteurella multocida is the main pathogen involved in infections through domestic animal bites; generally a local infection characterized by its particular virulence with consequent rapid onset. Serious infection has also been reported in persons affected by comorbidity without domestic animal bite injuries. Here we report the case of a woman with lower limb exudating vesicular skin ulcers affected by liver cirrhosis, bilateral knee arthritis, septicemia with positive blood c

Pasteurella multocida urinary tract infection in a pediatric patient with end-stage renal disease.

Pasteurella multocida is a Gram-negative bacillus that is part of the normal oral flora of cats and dogs. Most infections involving P. multocida are soft tissue infections after animal bites or scratches. We present a case of P. multocida urinary tract infection in a 13-year-old boy with end-stage renal disease receiving peritoneal dialysis. He was successfully treated with intravenous ampicillin-sulbactam followed by oral amoxicillin-clavulanate. Thirteen additional cases of P. multocida urinary tract infection (12 adults and one pediatric patient) reported in the literature were reviewed. Un

[An unusual case of pulmonary granulomatous lesion in an immunocompetent patient: infection caused by Pasteurella multocida].

We report a case of lung infection caused by Pasteurella multocida in an immunocompetent patient. Diagnosis was made both on histological analysis of a lung wedge resection, showing pyoepithelioid granulomas, and on bacteriological cultures from lung tissue. Histological diagnosis of pulmonary pasteurellosis is difficult, and other etiological causes of pyoepithelioid granulomas of the lung have to be discussed. Pulmonary pasteurellosis is particularly severe in immunocompromised patients, and should be systematically suspected in patients exposed to pets, eventhough a percutaneous exposure is

Experimental induction of pneumonic pasteurellosis in calves by intratracheal infection with Pasteurella multocida biotype A:3.

The study aimed to establish an experimental model to investigate the pathogenesis of lung infection by Pasteurella multocida, an important cause of bovine respiratory disease. An experimental model is required to assist the development of an effective vaccine. Sixteen 8-week-old calves were challenged intratracheally with 10(9) or 10(10) colony forming units of P. multocida in either 60 or 300 ml saline in a 2 x 2 factorial experiment. All animals became dull within 2-6h post-infection (p.i.) and two calves were killed humanely because of suspected endotoxic shock. Remaining animals showed in

In vivo production of neuraminidase by Pasteurella haemolytica in market stressed cattle after natural infection.

Pasteurella haemolytica (Ph) is the most important cause of the bovine acute fibrinohemorrhagic pneumonia that occurs in market stressed calves after shipment to feedyards. Recent characterization of neuraminidase production by these organisms has shown that all 16 serotypes produce an immunologically similar form of the enzyme. Anti-neuraminidase antibody against PhA1 and PhA6 was determined in 101 2- to 5-month-old calves, on their farms of origin, at the order buyer barn (OBB), and through 28 days in the feedyard. Half of the calves were vaccinated with a killed Ph serotype-A1 (PhA1) produc

Experimental infection of lambs with bovine respiratory syncytial virus and Pasteurella haemolytica: pathologic studies.

Nineteen 4-week-old, colostrum-deprived lambs were transtracheally inoculated with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), Pasteurella haemolytica biotype A serotype 1, or RSV and P haemolytica. Pneumonic lesions were more frequent, more extensive, and more severe in lambs inoculated with RSV and P haemolytica than in lambs inoculated with either agent alone. Lesions were seen in 2 of 4 lambs inoculated with P haemolytica alone, in 3 of 4 lambs inoculated with RSV alone, and in 11 of 11 lambs inoculated with RSV and P haemolytica. Grossly, lambs given P haemolytica alone had fibrinous pleuritis and

The pulmonary clearance of Pasteurella haemolytica in calves infected with bovine virus diarrhea or Mycoplasma bovis.

Based on current literature which commonly associates bovine virus diarrhea virus and Mycoplasma bovis with "pneumonic pasteurellosis," an investigation was conducted into the effect of these two pathogens on the capacity of bovine lung to clear inhaled Pasteurella haemolytica. There was no significant effect (p less than 0.05) of either bovine virus diarrhea virus or M. bovis on the mean clearance rate of P. haemolytica, nor did the time interval of three, five or seven days between the first inoculation and exposure to P. haemolytica and adversely affect the lung clearance rates. However, it
