Influence of paternal age on assisted reproduction outcome.

There has been an increasing tendency to delay parenthood in developed countries in recent years, and there is not enough information available regarding the effect of this on fertility. The aim of this work was to determine the role of paternal age on the outcome of assisted reproduction. A retrospective study was designed comprising a total of 2204 intrauterine insemination (IUI) cycles, 1286 IVF cycles and 1412 IVF cycles with donated oocytes during the period 2000 to 2006. Male mean age was 34.3 years (range 25-56) for IUI, 34.8 years (range 19-62) for IVF and 41.10 years (range 25-71) for

Risk factors for paternal physical child abuse.

OBJECTIVE: This study uses the developmental-ecological framework to examine a comprehensive set of paternal factors hypothesized to be linked to risk for paternal child abuse (PCA) among a diverse sample of fathers. Attention was given to fathers' marital status and their race/ethnicity (White, African American, and Hispanic). METHODS: Interviews were conducted with 1257 married or cohabiting biological fathers who participated in the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study. PCA was assessed when the index children were 3 years old. Analyses included a comprehensive set of self-reported p

Paternal work stress and prolonged time to pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore an association between psychosocial stress at work in married men and their spouses' prolonged time to pregnancy (TTP). METHODS: All married male workers of a large Korean petrochemical enterprise and their wives fulfilling the selection criteria were included. Main selection criteria were lack of use of contraceptives and experienced pregnancy in recent past. Data were available from 322 couples. Psychosocial stress at work was measured by the effort-reward imbalance questionnaire. Prolonged TTP was measured by the "TTP questionnaire". RESULTS

Paternal relatives and family history of breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Reported family medical history may be the most widely accessible genomics screen currently available. The worth of any population-screening tool may be measured by parameters such as sensitivity and specificity. There is some evidence and theory suggesting that family history of breast cancer may be more frequently communicated about maternal (versus paternal) lines. If true, a discrepancy in reporting family history of breast cancer could mean suboptimal accuracy for this genomics-screening tool. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of reported family history of breast cancer was

Influence of paternal age on the risk of spontaneous abortion.

The frequency of chromosomal anomalies in spermatozoa appears to increase with male age. Because these anomalies play a role in the etiology of spontaneous abortion, an influence of paternal age on risk of spontaneous abortion is plausible but not established. The aim was to characterize this influence in a prospective study among 5,121 California women, who as members of a prepaid health plan were interviewed in 1990 or 1991 when they were less than 13 weeks' pregnant and who were followed until the end of pregnancy. The risk of spontaneous abortion between weeks 6 and 20 of pregnancy was stu

Paternal age and the risk of birth defects in Norway.

PURPOSE: We studied 1,869,388 births from The Medical Birth Registry of Norway to assess the effect of father's age on risks of birth defects in offspring. METHOD: Thirteen separate categories were studied including pooled categories of neural tube defects and any type of defect. We used logistic regression models to adjust for maternal age, year of birth, maternity institution, parity, and correlation between siblings. RESULTS: There was little evidence of increased risk by high paternal age for any category of defects, except for a category of "other central nervous system" where risk esti

Response to alcohol in females with a paternal history of alcoholism.

RATIONALE: Several studies have demonstrated that males with a family history of alcoholism (FHP) show less of a response to alcohol (e.g. lower ratings of intoxication) than males without a family history of alcoholism (FHN). The purpose of this pilot study was to determine if FHP females also showed a reduced sensitivity to alcohol compared to FHN females. OBJECTIVES: To determine if FHP females (n=16) were less sensitive to the subjective effects and performance-impairing effects of alcohol compared to FHN females (n=16). METHODS: The effects of placebo and alcohol (0.25, 0.50, 0.75 g/kg,

Paternal age and risk of schizophrenia in adult offspring.

OBJECTIVE: The study examined the relation between paternal age at the time of birth and risk of schizophrenia in the adult offspring. METHOD: Data from the birth cohort of the Prenatal Determinants of Schizophrenia study were used in this study. Virtually all members of this birth cohort had prospective information about paternal age at the time of the offspring's birth. Subjects with schizophrenia and other schizophrenia spectrum disorders (N=71) among members of this birth cohort were previously ascertained. In separate analyses, paternal age was modeled as a continuous variable and as a c

Preferential loss of the paternal alleles in the 18q- syndrome.

Individuals with the 18q- syndrome have variable deletions from the long arm of chromosome 18. They also exhibit a highly variable phenotype. To correlate genotype with phenotype accurately, extensive molecular and phenotypic analyses are needed on each affected individual. As a part of this analysis, we have determined the parental origin of the deleted chromosome in 34 individuals with the 18q- syndrome. We have found that 85% of the de novo deletions are paternal in origin. The percentage of fathers of individuals with paternally derived deletions who were > 30 years old was (not significan

Paternal age and the risk of birth defects in offspring.

Previous studies have shown that advanced paternal age is associated with an increase in new dominant mutations that may result in some rare congenital anomalies or syndromes in the offspring. Nevertheless, few epidemiologic studies have evaluated the effect of paternal age on the risk of more common birth defects. We examined data from the British Columbia Health Surveillance Registry, which included a total of 9,660 cases of birth defects (22 specific defect groups). We chose matched controls from the birth files of British Columbia (1952-1973). With the exception of an unusual change in dir

Paternal age and the risk of congenital heart defects.

The effect of paternal age on the risk of birth defects among offspring is less well studied than the effect of maternal age, with few comprehensive epidemiologic studies having been conducted. Advanced paternal age has been shown to be associated with an increase in new dominant mutations that result in particular congenital anomalies. The relationship between paternal age and more common birth defects, for example, cardiac defects, has not been as extensively evaluated. Therefore, a total of 4,110 cases of congenital heart defects was identified from the British Columbia Health Surveillance

Effects of paternal occupational exposure on spontaneous abortions.

BACKGROUND: Paternal exposure to mutagenic agents has been suggested to affect pregnancy outcome adversely. METHODS: A nationwide data base of medically diagnosed spontaneous abortions and other pregnancies and national census data was used to evaluate the effects of men's occupational exposures on risk of spontaneous abortion in 99,186 pregnancies in Finland. Census data from the years 1975 and 1980 provided information about the occupation, industry, and socioeconomic status. A job-exposure classification was developed to classify women and their husbands according to possible occupational

Preferential germline mutation of the paternal allele in retinoblastoma.

The event triggering malignant proliferation in 70% of retinoblastoma tumours is loss of heterozygosity for chromosome 13q14, whereby the normal retinoblastoma gene (RB1) allele is lost and an already mutated RB1 allele remains in the tumour. The first allele suffers a mutational event--deletion, duplication or point mutation (manuscript in preparation)--either in the germ line (all bilateral patients) or in a somatic retinal cell (most unilateral patients). Most bilateral patients have no family history of retinoblastoma and are presumed to have new germline mutations which arose in the egg,

Human mutagens: evidence from paternal exposure?

The importance of inherited mutations as a cause of human disease has been established clearly through examples of well-defined genetic anomalies, such as Down syndrome and retinoblastoma. Furthermore, it is suspected that environmental contaminants induce mutations resulting in increased risk for such defects in subsequent generations of persons exposed. The present lack of direct evidence for induced inherited genetic disorders in human beings hampers the development of risk estimation techniques for extrapolation from animal models. The most extensive prospective epidemiologic studies of in

Hyperprolactinemia in women with paternal deprivation during childhood.

It was reported that most females with prolactinoma, idiopathic hyperprolactinemia, or euprolactinemic galactorrhea were reared either without their father or with an alcoholic, violent father. To gain further insight into this association, a group of sisters of patients with prolactinoma (generally exposed to the same environment as the patients') and a control group were studied. Women with paternal deprivation during childhood differed from the women who had normal childhoods in that they had: 1) higher mean serum prolactin concentration (14.7 versus 9.4 ng/mL; P less than .001); 2) higher

The role of paternal and maternal warmth and hostility on daughter's psychosocial outcomes: The insidious effects of father warmth combined with high paternal hostility.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the well-accepted view on the importance of parental warmth and parental hostility for adolescent development, few studies have examined the joint interactive effects of these two key aspects of parenting. Furthermore, research comparing maternal and paternal parenting is limited, with the father-daughter relationship during adolescence remaining one of the more understudied familial contexts. Given that family processes are key for the intergenerational transmission of inequality, these parent-child relationships may be especially important for youth at risk for exposure

Paternal low-dose benzo(a)pyrene exposure in rats impairs sexual development and fertility of the paternal lineage in F2 generation: A transgenerational study.

The field of Paternal Origins of Health and Disease (POHaD) is highly relevant but remains under-explored. The F2 generation from males indirectly exposed (F1 - via germ cells) to benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), named PF2, was investigated in this study under parameters of sexual development and reproductive performance of male and female rats. Male Wistar rats (F0) were exposed to BaP (0.1 µg/kg/day) for 31 consecutive days (gavage) during prepuberty. The F0 rats were mated with untreated females to produce male offspring (F1), which were exposed to BaP via germ cells. The F1 males were later mated wit
