Frequency dependence of dynamic compliance in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

An investigation of lung function was carried out in 99 randomly selected patients with calssic or definite rheumatoid arthritis and in 60 control subjects matched for age, sex, and smoking habits. Mean FEV1 and mean VC were both significantly lower in the rheumatoid patients due to significant differences for women but mean FEV/VC ratio was 73.0% in the rheumatoid group and 72.1% in the control. Steady-state transfer factor was significantly greater in the normal men than in the comparable rheumatoid group, but there was no difference for women. After excluding patients with FEV1 less than 80

Development and evaluation of a compliance test for patients taking disulfiram.

A breath test for carbon disulfide, a major excretion product of disulfiram, is described and evaluated. All breath excretions were standardized by collecting a fixed amount based on CO2 control. Excretion of CS2 falls rapidly (half life 8 to 18 hours), so that 20 to 30 hours following the last dose of disulfiram the test becomes negative. Approximately 300 tests in hospitalized patients taking disulfiram were positive; 40 tests in patients not taking this drug were negative. In an active disulfiram outpatient clinic more than one third of the patients who claimed to have taken disulfiram on t

Augmenting Adherence: Improving Medication Compliance and Patient Education in Anti-Retroviral Therapy through Graphical Representation.

Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) is a fundamental principle in the management of Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, significantly improving the quality of life for individuals living with the virus. However, the success of ART crucially depends on patient adherence to complex medication regimens that come with the therapy. Patients must meticulously adhere to their prescribed treatment plans to maintain viral suppression and prevent the progression of HIV. Medication adherence, a multifaceted challenge in healthcare, becomes particularly entangled within the realm of ART. Patients are

Characterizing patient compliance over six months in remote digital trials of Parkinson's and Huntington disease.

BACKGROUND: A growing number of clinical trials use various sensors and smartphone applications to collect data outside of the clinic or hospital, raising the question to what extent patients comply with the unique requirements of remote study protocols. Compliance is particularly important in conditions where patients are motorically and cognitively impaired. Here, we sought to understand patient compliance in digital trials of two such pathologies, Parkinson's disease (PD) and Huntington disease (HD). METHODS: Patient compliance was assessed in two remote, six-month clinical trials of PD (n

Surgical Intervention for Peripheral Artery Disease Does Not Improve Patient Compliance with Recommended Medical Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Nonadherence to smoking abstinence, antiplatelet therapy, and statin therapy in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) is associated with worse long-term outcomes. We hypothesized that patients who underwent invasive revascularization procedures would be more likely to adhere to these therapies than patients who were managed medically. METHODS: Prospective survey-based interviews pertaining to medication and behavioral compliance of patients with symptomatic PAD were performed. Specifically, adherence to smoking cessation, antiplatelet therapy, and antilipid therapy was eva

Does intranasal steroid spray technique affect side effects and compliance? Results of a patient survey.

BACKGROUND: Intranasal steroid sprays are fundamental in the medical management of inflammatory rhinological conditions. Side effects are common, but these may be related to the method of application rather than the medication itself. METHODS: A survey was distributed to patients using intranasal steroid sprays at the ENT out-patient clinic at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary over three months. This evaluated the spray technique used, side effects and compliance. RESULTS: Of 103 patients, 22 patients (21.4 per cent) reported side effects, including nasal irritation and epistaxis. Of the 20 patients
