Risk Factors for Readmission Following Febrile Neutropenia in Pediatric Oncology Patients.

Febrile neutropenia is the most common reason for admission from the emergency department for pediatric oncology patients. We identified pediatric inpatients age 1 to 21 years with an International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) diagnosis code of malignancy and either fever with neutropenia or fever alone over a 6-year period (2007-2012) using the PHIS+ database. We evaluated factors associated with readmission within 7 days after index hospitalization. There were 4029 index hospitalizations among 2349 patients in 6 hospitals, 294 encounters (7.3%) were followed by readmiss

Cardiac rehabilitation for patients with heart failure: association with readmission and mortality risk.

AIMS: To examine the temporal trends and factors associated with national cardiac rehabilitation (CR) referral and compare the risk of hospital readmission and mortality in those referred for CR versus no referral. METHODS AND RESULTS: This cohort study includes all adult patients alive 120 days from incident heart failure (HF) identified by the Danish Heart Failure Registry (n = 33 257) between 2010 and 2018. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to assess the association between CR referral and patient factors and acute all-cause hospital readmission and mortality at 1 year fol

Predictors of early hospital readmission in patients receiving home mechanical ventilation.

BACKGROUND: Although the proportion of patients with chronic respiratory failure requiring home mechanical ventilation (HMV) is increasing, hospital readmissions in these patients are also increasing. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the factors for early readmission in patients receiving HMV. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of adult patients readmitted to the hospital within a year who first received HMV and were discharged from the Asan Medical Center between March 2014 and February 2019. We compared the clinical characteristics at discharge before readmission between the early (re

A simple index predicting 30-day readmissions in acutely hospitalized patients.

BACKGROUND: There are various models attempting to predict 30-day readmissions of acutely admitted internal medicine patients. However, it is uncertain how to create a parsimonious index that has equivalent predictive ability and can be extrapolated to other settings. METHODS: We developed a regression equation to predict 30-day readmissions from all acute hospitalizations in internal medicine departments in a regional hospital in 2015-2016 and validated the model in 2019. The independent (predictor) variables were age, past hospitalizations, admission laboratory test results, length of stay

Intensive Care Unit Readmission in Patients With Primary Brain Injury and Tracheostomy.

BACKGROUND: Readmission for ventilator support in tracheostomy patients with primary brain injury is often attributed to failure of airway protection and aspiration pneumonia. Data regarding the incidence of intensive care unit readmissions and associated factors in these patients are limited. OBJECTIVES: To determine the factors associated with intensive care unit readmission among tracheostomy patients with primary brain injury, as compared with tracheostomy patients without primary brain injury. METHODS: Prospectively acquired data from an ongoing tracheostomy registry at an academic heal

Thirty-day readmission in patients undergoing head and neck microvascular reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Characteristics of 30-day unplanned readmissions after head and neck microvascular reconstruction remain poorly understood. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort of patients who underwent head and neck microvascular reconstruction between 2010 and 2015. RESULTS: The 30-day unplanned readmission rate was 13.0% (64/493). The most common readmission diagnoses were dehiscence, surgical site infection, or fistula (45.3%; n = 29). Of the readmissions, 46.9% (30/64) occurred within 7 days of discharge from the hospital. Risk factors for readmission on multivariable analysis inclu

The outcomes and risk factors of early readmission in patients with intestinal Behçet's disease.

Hospital readmission rate is an integral quality of care measurement for hospitalized patients which is unknown for intestinal Behçet's disease cases. The purpose of this study was to investigate the risk factors and outcomes for patients readmitted early with intestinal Behçet's disease. We retrospectively reviewed patients with intestinal Behçet's disease who were readmitted to our hospital between 2005 and 2016. We then analyzed the risk factors and outcomes for early readmission within 3 months. Of the 204 patients who were readmitted, 103 patients (50.5%) were readmitted within 3 months a

Predictive factors for and incidence of hospital readmissions of patients with acute and chronic pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Acute and chronic pancreatitis are common gastroenterological disorders that have a fairly unpredictable long-term course often associated with unplanned hospital readmissions. Little is known about the factors that increase or decrease the risk for a hospital readmission. The aim of this study was to identify positive and negative predictive factors for hospital readmissions of patients with acute and chronic pancreatitis after in-hospital treatment. METHODS: In a retrospective analysis data from the hospital information and reimbursement data system (HIS) were evaluate

The Risk Factors of Readmission in Postoperative Gynecologic Oncology Patients at a Single Institution.

INTRODUCTION: Hospital readmission rates are an important measure of quality care and have recently been tied to reimbursement. This study seeks to identify the risk factors for postoperative readmission in patients treated by a gynecologic oncology service. METHODS: A 7-year retrospective review (2007-2013) of all patients operated on by the University of Virginia gynecologic oncology service who were readmitted within 30 days of discharge was performed. Abstracted data included demographics, dates of surgery, operative details, cancer history, and relevant medical history. The readmitted pa

Red blood cell distribution width is a predictor of readmission in cardiac patients.

BACKGROUND: Three-quarters of rehospitalizations ($44 billion yearly estimated cost) may be avoidable. A screening tool for the detection of potential readmission may facilitate more efficient case management. HYPOTHESIS: An elevated red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is an independent predictor of hospital readmission in patients with unstable angina (UA) or non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). METHODS: The study is a retrospective observational cohort analysis of adults admitted in 2007 with UA or NSTEMI. Data were gathered by review of inpatient medical records. The rate

Clinical characteristics associated with readmission among patients undergoing vascular surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Readmission after a vascular surgery intervention is frequent, costly, and often considered preventable. Vascular surgery outcomes have recently been scrutinized by Medicare because of the high rates of readmission. We determined patient and clinical characteristics associated with readmission in a cohort of vascular surgery patients. METHODS: From 2009 to 2013, the medical records of all patients (n = 2505) undergoing interventions by the vascular surgery service at a single tertiary care institution were retrospectively reviewed. Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics were

Medical and socioenvironmental predictors of hospital readmission in patients with congestive heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic congestive heart failure (CHF) require frequent rehospitalization because of the exacerbation of CHF. It is of clinical importance to determine predicting factors for readmission to reduce this likelihood. Previous studies have focused primarily on the demographic and medical characteristics in selected subsets of patients. Therefore, within a broad cohort of consecutively hospitalized patients, we sought to identify not only demographic and medical predictors but also socioenvironmental factors associated with readmission. METHODS: We assessed demographic (a

Immediate versus delayed free-flap breast reconstruction: Higher readmission after immediate reconstruction in a 20,415-patient IPTW NSQIP cohort.

BACKGROUND: The timing of microsurgical breast reconstruction remains a central question in oncologic care. Immediate reconstruction offers psychological and esthetic advantages; however, concerns persist that it may increase short-term morbidity. Prior studies have been limited by selection bias and inconsistent risk adjustment, leaving the comparative safety of immediate versus delayed reconstruction unresolved at a national level. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of adult women undergoing free-flap breast reconstruction (CPT 19364) in the ACS-NSQIP registry (2012-2022). C

Postoperative Complications and Readmission Rates in Robotic-Assisted Versus Manual Total Knee Arthroplasty: Large, Propensity Score-Matched Patient Cohorts.

INTRODUCTION: There is a paucity of research comparing postoperative complication rates between manual total knee arthroplasty (M-TKA) and robotic-assisted total knee arthroplasty (RA-TKA). This study aims to compare 90-day postoperative complication, readmission, and emergency department rates between RA-TKA and M-TKA. METHODS: A retrospective review of a multihospital database identified patients who underwent TKA between January 2016 and May 2023. Surgeons who used the robotic-assisted surgery technique in <10% or >90% of their cases annually were excluded. This resulted in 15,999 cases (8

High Readmission Rate in a Patient With Chronic Heart Failure, End-Stage Renal Disease, and Chronic Pulmonary Obstructive Disease.

Hospital readmission is common for patients with multiple chronic comorbidities, but it is a burden to both patients and healthcare systems. While this is a multifactorial issue, it is important to identify some of the reasons that contribute to high readmission rates and advocate for concrete interventions that can be implemented. We report the case of a 68-year-old female with congestive heart failure with severely reduced ejection fraction, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease requiring home oxygen, and end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis who was readmitted more than 30 times in the pr

Impact of Unplanned Readmission on Patient-Reported Outcomes After Cervical Spine Surgery: A National Study of 13 355 Patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although risk factors for unplanned readmission after cervical spine surgery have been widely reported, less is known about how readmission itself affects patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). Using the Quality Outcomes Database registry of patients undergoing elective cervical spine surgery, we sought to (1) determine the impact of unplanned readmission on PROMs and (2) compare the effect of specific readmission reasons on PROMs. METHODS: An observational study was performed using a multi-institution, retrospective registry for patients undergoing cervical spi

CHA2DS2-VASc predicts readmission, outcomes and resource utilization in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting: A 7-year National Readmission Database study.

BACKGROUND: CHA2DS2-VASc score is used to assess thromboembolic risk in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF)/atrial flutter (AFL), however its utilization to predict outcomes and readmission at following discharge in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) regardless of AF/AFL presence is understudied. We sought to assess its utility in predicting outcomes, length of hospital stay (LOS), and healthcare-associated costs (HAC) in these patients. METHOD: The National Readmission Database (NRD) was queried from 2010 to 2017 for patients with/without AF/AFL undergoing CABG usi
