The authors describe a road accident that occurred in the Trieste region of Italy in 1998, wherein a pedestrian experienced a mortal injury. During the on-site examination, the forensic officer in charge noticed, in addition to dispersed abrasions, bruises, and fractures, an unusual position of the head with a highly unusual motility of the cervical rachis and, above all, an apparent whitish fibrous elastic cord, 7-8 cm long, which came out of the mouth. The cord was found to be a segment of the spinal cord, expelled and driven into the mouth cavity by the impact. This represents an interestin

With data from multidisciplinary investigations of child pedestrian injuries in Chicago, a new and simpler four-category taxonomy is presented based on the process that led to the collision. Two dimensions are recognized: the visibility of the child and/or the vehicle immediately prior to the event and the rapidity of action, either movement or change in direction, of the victim or the vehicle. The taxonomy is neutral with respect to responsibility for the collision and accommodates the findings of other researchers. This classification scheme is tested empirically using objective data element

INTRODUCTION: The increasing number of pedestrian fatalities has emerged as a significant public health concern, a situation that has been exacerbated by the disruptions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. While existing literature provides insights into general trends and factors affecting pedestrian safety, a gap remains in understanding how these dynamics shifted during the pandemic and late-pandemic periods. This study aims to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the factors that have differential impacts on pedestrian fatalities across three periods: pre-pandemic (2018-2019), pandemic

Nighttime traffic environments are filled with potential hazards, among which pedestrians are not only among the most frequently appearing targets but also some of the most easily overlooked moving obstacles by drivers in dark environments. To enhance driving safety under such conditions, we propose POP-YOLOv8, a customized object detection model designed specifically for detecting partially occluded pedestrian detection in nighttime traffic scenes. To improve both detection accuracy and real-time performance of YOLOv8n under low-light and occlusion-prone conditions, four key enhancements are

Pedestrian safety is a serious concern in the developing nations of the world. It is evident from the past studies that built-environment characteristics near bus-stops, play a crucial role on the frequency and overall share of pedestrian deaths and injuries in road traffic crashes. The present study aims to identify critical built-environment features around vulnerable bus-stops in an Indian city and evaluate the odds of risk that prevails on the safety of pedestrians near bus stops. Hotspot analysis was conducted to finalise 177 bus stop sites within high-crash clusters in the study area. Bu

Pedestrians represent one of the most vulnerable road user groups worldwide. Children and adult pedestrians with neurodevelopmental disorders may be at greater risk due to deficits in a range of domains, such as attention, social communication, motor control and executive function. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (American Psychological Association, 2013), neurodevelopmental disorders include individuals with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Specific Learning Disorder, Motor Difficulties, C

At a Nigerian university hospital, none of the motorcyclists who presented over a 12 month period had been wearing a helmet, and of the eight patients who died, seven had head injuries. Of the five collision types described, the rate of motorcycle-other vehicle collisions was highest at 40.6%, while the motorcycle-pedestrian rate was 23.4%. Measures to prevent these collisions might reduce overall crashes by 64%; in addition, helmet law should be enforced.

PURPOSE: While prior research has documented substance involvement among pedestrians injured in motor-vehicle collisions, fewer studies have examined how alcohol and drug positivity varies across temporal, demographic, and socioeconomic characteristics. This study characterized alcohol and drug positivity among adult pedestrians injured in motor vehicle-pedestrian collisions and examined variation in positivity across these characteristics.
METHODS: Patient-level data were retrospectively obtained for adult pedestrians (≥18 years) evaluated at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center following t

Despite the promised benefits, the introduction of Automated Vehicles (AVs) on roads will be confronted by many challenges, including public readiness to use those vehicles and share the roads with them. The risk profile of road users is a key determinant of their safety on roads. However, the relation of such risk profiles to road users' perception of AVs is less known. This study aims to address the above research gap by conducting a cross-sectional survey to investigate the acceptance of Fully Automated Vehicles (FAVs) among different non-AV-user groups (i.e., pedestrians, cyclists, and con

Pedestrians who use wheelchairs (seated pedestrians) report 36% - 75% higher mortality rates than standing pedestrians in car-to-pedestrian collisions but the cause of this mortality is unknown. This is the first study to investigate the cause of seated pedestrian mortality in vehicle impacts using finite element simulations. In this study a manual wheelchair model was developed using geometry taken from publicly available CAD data, and was tested to meet ISO standards. The GHBMC 50th percentile male simplified occupant model was used as the seated pedestrian and the EuroNCAP family car and sp

During a 1-day workshop organized by the German Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (DGOU) 15 German accident researchers used different approaches to improve the effectiveness of accident prevention for pedestrians and bicyclists on German roads. The main results of this analysis show: Fatal injuries of pedestrians have been significantly reduced by 82% between 1970 (n=6.056) and 2007 (n=695). Similarly, fatalities of bicyclists have been reduced during the same time period from 1,835 to 425 which amount to almost 80%. However, the total number of injured cyclists increased almost twice,

Police road accident data from Great Britain for 1990-2009 were analysed. RR(NF) is the risk of a casualty occurring in the first half of road crossing, the half nearest to the pedestrian's starting position at the roadside, compared to the risk of it occurring in the second half. Children and younger adult pedestrians had a high relative risk of being killed or seriously injured in the nearside of the road (RR(NF)). RR(NF) decreased with age, for men and women, but rose again for people aged over 85 years. It was also substantially lower for children under 10 years old. Three possible explana

OBJECTIVE: The literature indicates that trauma center pedestrian mortality rates approximate twice that of injured car occupants. This study was performed to test the hypothesis that outcomes will be similar given similar degrees of injury severity if analyzed from an epidemiologic perspective. Differences are expected in the cause and place of death because of different injury profiles.
DESIGN: Prospective population-based study.
METHODS: The study group consisted of all adult car occupants and pedestrians sustaining major injury -- Injury Severity Score (ISS) of >15 -- in a defined area o

Injuries in car to pedestrian collisions are affected by various factors such as the vehicle body type, pedestrian body size and impact location as well as the collision speed. This study aimed to investigate the influence of such factors taking a Finite Element (FE) approach. A total of 72 collision cases were simulated using three different vehicle FE models (Sedan, SUV, Mini-Van), three different pedestrian FE models (AM50, AF05, AM95), assuming two different impact locations (center and the corner of the bumper) and at four different collision speeds (20, 30, 40 and 50 km/h). The impact ki

Pedestrian following behavior has a significant impact on crowd dynamics within transportation hubs, where dense and heterogeneous passenger flows pose substantial traffic risk challenges. However, empirical research on this behavior in such complex environments remains scarce, and many existing models still rely on subjective assumptions. This study bridges this gap through controlled experiments to investigate pedestrian following behavior during walking and running, which are typical movement states in transportation hub scenarios.Theresults demonstrate that pedestrians exhibitalower willin
