Acceptability of an online peer support group as a strategy to improve antiretroviral therapy adherence among young people in Kampala district, Uganda: qualitative findings.

INTRODUCTION: Peer support groups may contribute to adherence and play a role in decreasing the stigma of antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence among young people living with HIV (YPLHIV). However, peer support activities usually occur face-to-face in Uganda and elsewhere in Sub-Saharan Africa and thus have structural limitations and may not be readily available when young people need them. Online peer support has the potential to help YPLHIV access regular psychosocial support without significant effort or cost. We assessed the acceptability of a WhatsApp peer support group as a strategy to

Societal and organisational influences on implementation of mental health peer support work in low-income and high-income settings: a qualitative focus group study.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the established evidence base for mental health peer support work, widespread implementation remains a challenge. This study aimed to explore societal and organisational influences on the implementation of peer support work in low-income and high-income settings. DESIGN: Study sites conducted two focus groups in local languages at each site, using a topic guide based on a conceptual framework describing eight peer support worker (PSW) principles and five implementation issues. Transcripts were translated into English and an inductive thematic analysis was conducted to char

Insights from Team Clinic: A Person-Centered Virtual Peer Group Care Model Adapted for Marginalized and Historically Excluded Youth with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).

BACKGROUND: Despite advancements in T1D care regimens, racially and ethnically diverse youth with low income continue to experience worse health outcomes, more psychosocial challenges, and higher barriers to care. Alternative care models are needed to address the needs of this population. METHODS: Team Clinic is a person-centered virtual peer group (VPG) care model that was assessed in a 15-month, pragmatic randomized controlled trial. Youth (ages 10-17) and their families were assigned to study arms based on their clinician's group (standard care or person-centered care, PCC) and then random

Peer support for discharge from inpatient mental health care versus care as usual in England (ENRICH): a parallel, two-group, individually randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: High numbers of patients discharged from psychiatric hospital care are readmitted within a year. Peer support for discharge has been suggested as an approach to reducing readmission post-discharge. Implementation has been called for in policy, however, evidence of effectiveness from large rigorous trials is missing. We aimed to establish whether peer support for discharge reduces readmissions in the year post-discharge. METHODS: We report a parallel, two-group, individually randomised, controlled superiority trial, with trial personnel masked to allocation. Patients were adult psy

Effects of a people care-based song-centered group music program on perceived parental care, self-esteem, peer relationships, and happiness in school-age children.

INTRODUCTION: In the Republic of Korea, the expansion of dual-income households and the nuclearization of families have widened gaps in child care, increasing the role of community care providers; however, how the care they provide is actually perceived by children has rarely been examined. This study developed a People Care-Based Song-Centered Group Music Program that integrates the 10 techniques of interpersonal caring theory into song-centered music activities, and examined its effects on perceived parental care, self-esteem, peer relationships, and happiness in school-age children using a

Feasibility and Preliminary Effects of a Social Media-Based Peer-Group Mobile Messaging Smoking Cessation Intervention Among Chinese Immigrants who Smoke: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Chinese immigrants experience significant disparities in tobacco use. Culturally adapted tobacco treatments targeting this population are sparse and the use is low. The low use of these treatment programs is attributed to their exclusive focus on individuals who are ready to quit and the wide range of barriers that Chinese immigrants face to access these programs. To support Chinese immigrant smokers at all levels of readiness to quit and address their access barriers, we developed the WeChat Quit Coach, a culturally and linguistically appropriate WeChat (Tencent Holdings Limited)-

Enhanced peer-group strategies to support the prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission leads to increased retention in care in Uganda: A randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the scale-up of Option B+, long-term retention of women in HIV care during pregnancy and the postpartum period remains an important challenge. We compared adherence to clinic appointments and antiretroviral therapy (ART) at 6 weeks, 6, and and 24 months postpartum among pregnant women living with HIV and initiating Option B+. Women were randomized to a peer group support, community-based drug distribution and income-generating intervention called "Friends for Life Circles" (FLCs) versus the standard of care (SOC). Our secondary outcome was infant HIV status and HIV-free s

"Don't need [therapy]! Not necessary, that's what we're for!": Does content from fibromyalgia Facebook peer support groups emulate psychological flexibility principles?

OBJECTIVE: Many persons with fibromyalgia (FM) use online peer support groups (OPSGs) to address unmet emotional or psychological needs. Some OPSG members have suggested that participation in an OPSG is a viable substitute for professional psychological services, however, no published research exploring this claim was identified. METHODS: Discussion content collected from three Facebook FM OPSGs was thematically analyzed to explore whether the content posted in FM OPSGs emulated content consistent with the psychological flexibility model underlying Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) - an

Efficacy of the peer-led ''Honest, Open, Proud'' group program to improve stigma stress and quality of life in adolescents with mental illness: randomized controlled trial.

Adolescents with mental illness (MI) often experience public stigma and self-stigma and struggle with the dilemma whether to disclose their MI, which may reduce their quality of life (QoL). Disclosure decisions are central in coping with MI and stigma, as disclosure may improve well-being and facilitate help-seeking, but can be risky. The peer-led Honest, Open, Proud (HOP) group program was developed to support disclosure decisions and to reduce self-stigma. In this two-arm 2:1-randomized controlled trial, 113 adolescents with MI aged 13-21 years and at least moderate disclosure-related distre

"It's Gonna be a Lifeline": Findings From Focus Group Research to Investigate What People Who Use Opioids Want From Peer-Based Postoverdose Interventions in the Emergency Department.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Postoverdose interventions that deploy peer recovery support specialists to emergency departments (EDs) are a promising response to opioid overdoses among patients presenting in EDs. The objective of this study was to elicit patients' perspectives regarding the feasibility and acceptability of such an intervention and to ensure that their perspectives are represented in intervention design, implementation, and evaluation. METHOD: In 2019 the study investigators conducted focus groups with people who use opioids to elicit perspectives about a postoverdose intervention delivere

Social justice interdependence among students in counseling psychology training programs: Group actor-partner interdependence model of social justice attitudes, training program norms, advocacy intentions, and peer relationships.

Counseling psychologists have voiced the importance of nurturing social justice principles in the training of psychologists to better meet diverse people's psychological and social needs. Much of the research on training, however, has been focused on individual factors (e.g., self-efficacy, spirituality). Little empirical evidence exists on the mutual support among students and the role of shared social justice principles in counseling psychology training programs. Thus, we used the group actor-partner interdependence model (GAPIM) to test whether the advocacy intentions of a given student in

Effects of a support group leader education program jointly developed by health professionals and patients on peer leader self-efficacy among leaders of scleroderma support groups: a two-arm parallel partially nested randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: More people with rare diseases likely receive disease education and emotional and practical support from peer-led support groups than any other way. Most rare-disease support groups are delivered outside of the health care system by untrained leaders. Potential benefits may not be achieved and harms, such as dissemination of inaccurate information, may occur. Our primary objective was to evaluate the effects of a rare-disease support group leader education program, which was developed collaboratively by researchers, peer support group leaders, and patient organization leaders, comp

'We Don't Have to Prove to People How We're Feeling': Understanding the Role of Peer Support Groups in Countering Epistemic Injustices in Long COVID at a US Centre.

BACKGROUND: Long COVID, an infection-associated chronic condition characterised by new or worsening signs or symptoms for more than 3 months after a SARS-CoV-2 infection, is a chronic debilitating illness which remains poorly understood. Epistemic injustice in healthcare describes the unique harms or wrongs done to a person in their capacity to share and acquire knowledge about their illness. Although the concept of epistemic injustice has been described in other chronic conditions, few studies have explored these concepts in Long COVID. OBJECTIVES: (1) To understand the lived experience of e

Peer mentor versus teacher delivery of a physical activity program on the effects of BMI and daily activity: protocol of a school-based group randomized controlled trial in Appalachia.

BACKGROUND: Rural Appalachian populations have poorer health and fewer positive health-related behaviors compared to other United States populations. Appalachians are the most sedentary U.S. population and teens are particularly sedentary. Obesity prevention through improving physical activity is a top priority in Rural Healthy People 2020. Obesity prevalence among Appalachian teens exceeds the national rates of 13.9% and has consistently been greater than 26%. Organized sports has not been effective at improving daily physical activity or health outcomes for Appalachian teens. The purpose of
