INTRODUCTION: Pentraxin-3 (PTX3) is an acute-phase reactant that shares structural and functional homology with C-reactive protein (CRP). However, unlike CRP, which is synthesized mainly in the liver, PTX3 is produced at the site of inflammation. It has been suggested that PTX3 plays the same role in the periphery that CRP does in circulation. PTX3 may represent a rapid marker of local inflammation.
METHODS: Fifty-one patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD) were enrolled. Blood samples were collected on admission. Plasma concentration of PTX3 and high-sensitivity CRP (hsCRP) were d

OBJECTIVE: Pentraxin 3 (PTX3) is a novel candidate immunoinflammatory marker that has been reported to be associated with cardiometabolic risk factors and to predict adverse outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between the plasma levels of PTX3 and plaque vulnerability and the effect of the levels using statin in patients with coronary artery disease.
METHODS: We determined the associations among the plasma levels of PTX3 and coronary plaque vulnerability in nonculprit coronary lesions with stenosis as assessed by inte

Long pentraxin 3 (PTX3) is a recently discovered multimeric inflammatory mediator that is structurally linked to short pentraxins, such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and serum amyloid P component. PTX3 is produced by a variety of tissues and cells, including vascular endothelial cells and macrophages. Because of its extrahepatic synthesis (in contrast to CRP), the PTX3 level is believed to be a true independent indicator of disease activity because PTX3 is produced at sites of inflammation and is intimately linked to endothelial dysfunction. PTX3 also has key functions in innate immunity and has

BACKGROUND: Although inflammation is an important feature of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), the usefulness of local inflammatory markers as biomarkers for PAH is unknown. In this study, we tested whether plasma concentrations of human pentraxin 3 (PTX3), a local inflammatory marker, would be a useful biomarker for detecting PAH.
METHODS: Plasma PTX3 concentrations were evaluated in 50 PAH patients (27 with idiopathic PAH, 17 with PAH associated with connective tissue disease (CTD-PAH), and six with congenital heart disease), 100 age and sex-matched healthy controls, and 34 disease-mat

BACKGROUND: Pentraxins are classic mediators of inflammation and markers of acute-phase reactions. Pentraxin-3 (PTX3) is the first-identified long pentraxin and is believed to be a true independent indicator of disease activity. Although a classic pentraxin, C-reactive protein, and its association with various systemic diseases is well documented in the periodontal literature, there is no data on PTX3 to our knowledge.
METHODS: Forty participants (20 males and 20 females; age range: 23 to 50 years) were involved in the study. Participants were divided into three groups based on gingival index

OBJECTIVE: Cell death normally occurs during pregnancy and is critical during its common complication, preeclampsia. The long pentraxin 3 (PTX3) gene is generated in tissues that cope with excessive or deregulated cell death and inhibits the cross-presentation of cell-associated antigens. We examined whether PTX3 is expressed during pregnancy and possibly involved in the development of preeclampsia.
METHODS: Women with preeclampsia (n = 30), women with uncomplicated pregnancies (n = 66), age-matched healthy women (n = 50), women who developed acute bacterial infections (n = 20), and women wit

BACKGROUND: Thyroid nodules are extremely common, yet the exact physio-pathological mechanisms underlying their benign or malignant development remain poorly understood. Pentraxin-3 (PTX3) is an innate immune inflammatory mediator involved in inflammation, tissue remodeling, and oncogenesis, processes often coexistent in thyroid pathology. This study evaluated plasma and tissue PTX3 in patients undergoing thyroidectomy for benign or malignant nodules.
METHODS: A total of 52 patients were enrolled. Plasma PTX3 levels were assessed by ELISA before surgery and again 45 days afterward. PTX3 expre

Atherosclerosis (AS) and its complications are the leading causes of death worldwide. Endothelial cell (EC) senescence plays a crucial role in the development of AS by aggravating endothelial erosion and plaque instability. Neuronal pentraxin 1 (NPTX1) is a secreted glycoprotein that plays a key role in various neurological functions, such as synaptic function, plasticity at excitatory synapses, and neurite damage. Although NPTX1 is upregulated in senescent ECs, its role in EC senescence and AS remains unknown. Here, we investigated the role of NPTX1 in ischemic stroke and its potential mechan

INTRODUCTION: During the acute-phase of COVID-19, elevated levels of several acute-phase proteins, such as C-reactive protein (CRP), mannose-binding lectin (MBL), pentraxin 3 (PTX-3), serum amyloid A (SAA) and surfactant protein D (SP-D), are associated with severe to fatal clinical outcomes. Typically, these markers return to baseline within days after resolution of the acute infection.
METHODS: In this study, we assessed the plasma levels of these proteins in a well-defined cohort of 141 COVID-19 convalescent patients 10 weeks after infection and compared them to 98 non-infected controls. I

Neurons connect to each other via synapses to form neural circuits. Recent research has shown that neuropsychiatric disorders and neurological disorders, such as autism spectrum disorders and Alzheimer's disease, are synaptic diseases caused by abnormalities of synapses. Synaptic organizers are molecules responsible for synapse formation. Neuronal pentraxin 2 (NP2) is a synaptic organizer and a secreted protein that is expressed mainly in the hippocampus and cerebellum, and it contributes to synaptic plasticity. NP2 forms clusters with its family proteins, NP1 and neuronal pentraxin receptor,

UNLABELLED: Background/Aim of the study: The periprosthetic or superficial site infections are one of the most catastrophic and difficult to manage complications following total hip arthroplasty. Recently, in addition to well know systemic markers of inflammation, the blood and synovial fluid biomarkers are focused to have a possible role in the infection diagnosis. The long Pentraxin 3 (PTX3) seems to be a sensitive biomarker of acute phase inflammation. The objectives of this prospective and multicentre study were (1) to establish the plasma trend effectiveness of PTX3 in patients undergoing

Dysregulation of the complement system is central to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness in the developed world. Most of the genetic variation associated with AMD resides in complement genes, with the greatest risk associated with polymorphisms in the complement factor H (CFH) gene; factor H (FH) is the major inhibitor of the alternative pathway (AP) of complement that specifically targets C3b and the AP C3 convertase. Long pentraxin 3 (PTX3) is a soluble pattern recognition molecule that has been proposed to inhibit AP activation via recruitment of FH. Altho

Biomarkers for early diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are needed in chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, a leading cause of HCC. We evaluated whether measurement of serum pentraxin 3 (PTX3) could improve diagnosis of HCC in chronic HBV infection. Data from patients with HBV-related chronic hepatitis (n = 159), cirrhosis (n = 99) and HCC (n = 107), and healthy controls (n = 151) were analyzed. Serum PTX3 concentration was measured by immunoassay. Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was applied to assess diagnostic accuracy. PTX3 levels were significantl

The first line of defense in innate immunity is provided by cellular and humoral mediators. Pentraxins are a superfamily of phylogenetically conserved humoral mediators of innate immunity. PTX3, the first long pentraxin identified, is a soluble pattern recognition molecule rapidly produced by several cell types in response to primary pro-inflammatory signals and microbial recognition. PTX3 acts as an important mediator of innate immunity against pathogens of fungal, bacterial and viral origin, and as a regulator of inflammation, by modulating complement activation and cell extravasation, and f
