To verify the effect of age on gastric secretions in gastric (GU) and duodenal ulcer (DU) patients, we carried out a retrospective study evaluating basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion in 427 peptic ulcer subjects aged between 12 and 73 years (GU = 74, DU = 353) in addition to studying gastric juice pepsin, serum pepsinogen group A (PGA) and gastrin in 175 patients (GU = 28, DU = 147). All subjects were then divided into groups according to their sex and age (< 30, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and > 60 years). Basal, maximal and peak acid outputs (BAO, MAO, PAO) were unchanged in the various age

Background: The main "peptic" cells of the gastric glands provide the body's only source of pepsinogen synthesis and incretion. Small amounts of endogenously supplied pepsinogen in biological fluids play an important role in anabolic processes in the mother and newborn. The aim: This work aimed to analyze the dynamics of pepsinogen activity in the blood serum, saliva, urine, and coprofiltrate in pregnant women in each trimester of pregnancy and in the postpartum period, taking into account the body weight of the newborn-normal weight, underweight, and overweight. Methods: Data from studies inv

BACKGROUND: We assessed the validity of using serum pepsinogen tests (sPGTs) to differentiate autoimmune atrophic gastritis (AAG) from environmental atrophic gastritis (EAG). We also investigated the correlation and prognostic value between disease stage, according to Operative Link for Gastritis Assessment (OLGA)/Operative Link on Gastric Intestinal Metaplasia Assessment (OLGIM), and sPGT results in patients with gastric atrophy.
METHODS: We enroled 115 patients in this prospective study: 95 with atrophic gastritis (16 with AAG and 79 with EAG) and 20 non-atrophic gastritis. These patients,

Serum pepsinogens have been widely acknowledged as gastric mucosal biomarkers; however, a multicountry report on the benefits of pepsinogens as biomarkers has not yet been published. We analyzed 1,206 sera and gastric mucosal samples collected from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Indonesia, Myanmar, Nepal and Thailand then assessed the association between gastric mucosal changes and Helicobacter pylori infection. The new cutoff values for serum pepsinogen values were evaluated using a receiver operating characteristic analysis. The participants with H. pylori infection had significantly lower pepsinogen I

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The relationship between the serum pepsinogen (sPG) level and changes in gastric mucosa has been well studied. Here, we evaluated the usefulness of sPG (I, II, I/II ratio) and intragastric pH as a biomarker of severe gastric atrophy in gastric neoplastic lesions.
METHODS: A total of 186 consecutive Korean patients with gastric neoplastic lesions underwent endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) in this study. The serologic atrophy group had sPG I level ≤ 70 ng/mL and an sPG I/II ratio ≤ 3.0. Before ESD, overnight fasting venous blood and gastric juice samples were collected to

The excluded stomach after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP) cannot be readily examined by endoscopy for obvious anatomic reasons. Thus it is difficult to monitor possible changes in the gastric mucosa. However, the type and severity of gastritis can now be assessed by a combination of serologic tests: pepsinogen I and antibodies to Helicobacter pylori and H,K-ATPase. Morbidly obese patients were examined before and 1 to 4 years after surgery. A group of 34 patients (mean age 39 years, BMI 44 kg/m(2)) underwent RYGBP; another group of 30 patients (mean age 42 years, BMI 44 kg/m(2)) had simple g

It has been known that patients with chronic renal failure have elevated concentrations of serum pepsinogens, which are raised by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection of the stomach. This study was conducted to examine how renal dysfunction and H. pylori infection affect serum pepsinogen (PG) concentrations. The subjects consisted of 93 patients with renal disease (60 males and 33 females with a mean age of 55 +/- 1.3 years). Dialysis patients were not included. Twenty-four-hour urinary collection was performed, and creatinine clearance (Ccr) was calculated for all the subjects. Status of

Chronic atrophic gastritis, which is though to be a high risk for gastric cancer, can be diagnosed by serum pepsinogen levels. We compared the usefulness of the measurement of pepsinogen levels and indirect photofluorography as indicators of gastric cancer in a mass screening involving 5,620 Japanese subjects (mean age: 60.1 years old; male : female = 2,268:3,352) in 1991 and 1992. Subjects with a serum pepsinogen I level below 30 micrograms/liter or a pepsinogen I/II ratio below 2.0 were considered to be at high risk of gastric cancer. The incidence of gastric cancer and the ratio of early ca

We investigated the effect of H. pylori therapy on serum concentrations of pepsinogens on 87 patients of gastro-duodenal disease. In addition, we intended to see whether serum pepsinogen can serve as markers of response to H. pylori eradication. In 48 successfully eradicated cases, there was a significant decrease in gastritis score, and was a significant fall in serum pepsinogen II (PG II) level, and was a significant increase in pepsinogen I/II ratio (PG I/II ratio). In contrast, no change in gastritis score, PG II, and PG I/II ratio were observed in 39 unsuccessfully eradicated patients. No

Intracerebroventricular administration of CCK-8S was associated with a stimulation of gastric pepsinogen secretion from anaesthetized rats; similar effects were induced by CCK-8S given intravenously. The excitatory effect of intracerebroventricular CCK-8S was not modified by central injection of L-364,718 or L-365,260, whereas both these antagonists, given by intravenous route, prevented the pepsigogue action of parenteral CCK-8S. Intracerebroventricular or intravenous CCK-8S also increased basal acid secretion, this latter effect being prevented by parenteral L-365,260 but not L-364,718. It i

Omeprazole, a potent and long-acting inhibitor of gastric acid secretion, is known to increase both serum gastrin and pepsinogen A and C levels in unoperated subjects. It has been suggested that the rise in serum pepsinogens is mediated by the omeprazole-induced increase in serum gastrin. This study was undertaken to determine the role of gastrin in hyper-pepsinogenemia induced by antisecretory therapy. We have studied the effect of a 5-day course of 40 mg of omeprazole daily on fasting serum gastrin and pepsinogen A and C levels in 14 patients with an antrectomy and a Billroth I anastomosis (

Serum group I pepsinogen (PG I) levels were measured by radioimmunoassay in patients with peptic ulcer and normal subjects. The mean (+/-S.E.) serum PG I level in 318 normal subjects was 79 +/- 3 ng/ml. The level in males, 87 +/- 2 ng/ml (n = 246), was significantly higher than in females, 72 +/- 4 ng/ml (n = 72). The serum PG I levels in the patients with gastric ulcer and in those with duodenal ulcer were 91 +/- 7 ng/ml (n = 31) and 117 +/- 10 ng/ml (n = 31), respectively. Both values were significantly higher than the value in the subjects with endoscopically normal mucosa (63 +/- 5 ng/ml).

A simplification of the traditional hemoglobin methods for determining serum pepsinogen concentration was developed. In this method, 10% trichloroacetic acid solution was added to control samples, and hemoglobin substrate was added to controls and active enzyme samples; standards and samples were incubated for 18 hours, the proteins in the active tubes were precipitated with trichloroacetic acid and removed by filtration, and the absorbances of the supernatant of each standard and sample at 280 nm were measured. The major differences between this method and other methods for determining pepsin

Gastric pepsinogens were studied by immunoenzymologic and immunohistochemical methods in non-cancerous adult gastric mucosa, in fetal stomach, and in gastric carcinomas. In noncancerous adult mucosa, immunoenzymologic methods showed that pepsinogen II (previously called Pg I-II) was found mostly in fundic or mediogastric extracts, whereas Pg IV was predominant in antropyloric extracts. Pg II was localized by immunofluorescence techniques in the chief cells of deep glands found near the muscularis. Pg II was localized by immunofluorescence techniques in the chief cells of deep glands found near

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated longitudinal changes in the serum pepsinogen (PG) I/II ratio according to endoscopic gastric mucosal atrophy.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 21,265 participants who underwent endoscopy during health checkups between 2015 and 2023. Longitudinal changes in PG I/II ratio were examined in 2217 subjects with ≥ 2 endoscopies using linear mixed-effects models. Serum PG I, PG II, and Helicobacter pylori IgG were measured. The AG severity was graded endoscopically according to Kimura-Takemoto classification.
RESULTS: The PG I/II ratio decreased stepwise with adv

OBJECTIVES: The clinical significance of serum pepsinogen (PG) for screening gastric cancer has been a controversial topic. Serum PG I levels have been demonstrated to be correlated with age, sex, and the Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection. However, the underlying factors that influence serum PG I variations remain to be fully elucidated. We aimed to evaluate the impacts of sex and body mass index (BMI) on PG I in Chinese population.
METHODS: The cross-sectional study recruited 4,299 apparently healthy participants in Fujian Province. Serum PG levels were automatically measured using ELISA me

UNLABELLED: The significance of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in pediatric abdominal pain remains poorly recognized. We examined associations of H. pylori infection and serum pepsinogens (PGs), as non-invasive markers of gastritis, with pediatric abdominal pain. A case-control study was conducted among 99 children aged 5-17 years admitted to one hospital for abdominal pain (cases) without an apparent organic reason. Using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, sera were tested and compared with 179 controls for anti-H. pylori immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies and PGI and PGII levels.
