Previous in vitro and animal experiments have shown that sulforaphane, which is abundant in broccoli, inhibits Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and blocks gastric tumor formation. This suggests that broccoli consumption prevents chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) introduced by H. pylori infection and, therefore, gastric cancer. For an epidemiological investigation of the relationship between the broccoli consumption and CAG, a cross-sectional study of 438 male employees, aged 39 to 60 years, of a Japanese steel company was conducted. CAG was serologically determined with serum cut-off v

Background/Objectives: Periostracum Cicadae (PC) is commonly used to treat chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG), but its underlying mechanisms are unclear. We investigated the therapeutic effects, active ingredients and molecular mechanisms of PC on CAG. Methods: We analyzed the components in the serum extract of PC by UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap-MS/MS. Then, we used rat and cell models to assess the impact of PC on CAG and employed network pharmacology and bioinformatics to predict key targets and active ingredients. Finally, we confirmed hub targets through experiments and molecular docking. Results: A tot

Cramer (1981) reported that Pg-1 (urinary pepsinogen) in the rat was loosely linked with albinism in the linkage group I. We performed a three point test on the loci of pg-1, c, and Hbb. We could reconfirm that pg-1 was autosomal trait with two co-dominant alleles of pg-1a and pg-1b. But in progeny of ((WF X IS) X WF) backcross, pg-1 was linked to neither c nor Hbb, while a close linkage between c and Hbb was detected. Also pg-1 was not linked to Mup-1 (LG II), a (LG IV), Es-3 (LG V), and h (LG VI). pg-1 will be one of the most valuable genetic markers of the rats, since pg-1 was highly polymo

INTRODUCTION: Gastric cancer is a major cause of gastrointestinal cancer deaths, and early detection is key to improving survival. Current diagnostic methods have limitations, highlighting the need for new biomarkers. Our study aimed to explore the potential of serum-soluble human leukocyte antigen-G (sHLA-G), pepsinogen I/pepsinogen II (PGI/PGII) ratio (PGR), and gastrin-17 (G17) as markers for diagnosing and monitoring gastric cancer progression.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted to analyze serum levels of sHLA-G, PGR, and G17. These levels were compared among various gastric con

We sought to study the relationship between serum pepsinogens and different histopathologic features of Helicobacter pylori-related chronic gastritis. One hundred forty-nine consecutive dyspeptic patients underwent endoscopy with biopsies; serum pepsinogens I and II were measured by immunoassay. Serum levels of pepsinogens (sPG) were significantly correlated with H. pylori density both of the corpus (sPGI: r = 0.32, P < .001; sPGII: r = 0.56, P < .001) and antrum (sPGI: r = 0.41, P < .001; sPGII: r = 0.43, P < .001) as well as with chronic inflammation (sPGI: r = 0.26, P < .001; sPGII: r = 0.4

BACKGROUND: Whereas chronic atrophic gastritis is known to be an intermediate stage in gastric carcinogenesis, information is sparse about factors associated with this precancerous lesion except for Helicobacter pylori.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional study of 566 men aged 50-55 years in the Japan Self-Defense Forces, we examined the relation of H. pylori infection, smoking, alcohol use, and dietary factors to the prevalence of chronic atrophic gastritis as determined by serum pepsinogen I and pepsinogen II (I/II ratio < 3.0. and pepsinogen I < 70 ng/ml). Chronic atrophic gastritis was classifi

Inositol hexakisphosphate kinases (IP6Ks) catalyze the synthesis of the inositol pyrophosphate 5-InsP7, and regulate diverse physiological processes. Ip6k1-/- mice display reduced body weight despite normal food intake, elevated fecal protein, and reduced skeletal muscle mass compared with Ip6k1+/+ mice, suggesting that IP6K1 may support protein digestion. IP6K1 is expressed throughout the mouse gastrointestinal tract, and is especially enriched in the cytoplasm of chief cells in the stomach, which are responsible for the storage and secretion of digestive enzymes. BACKGROUND: A 100-bp insertion/deletion polymorphism in the pepsinogen C gene has been associated with the risk of gastric cancer (GC).
OBJECTIVE: We analyzed the relationships of the 100-bp insertion/deletion polymorphism with GC, atrophic gastritis (AG), and intestinal metaplasia (IM) in the Mexican general population (MGP).
METHODS: We studied the genomic DNA of subjects with GC n = 80, AG and IM n = 60, controls n = 110, and the MGP n = 97. PGC gene insertion/deletion polymorphism was identified by means of PCR, capillary electrophoresis and GeneScan software.
RESULTS: Different allele

UNLABELLED: The significance of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in pediatric abdominal pain remains poorly recognized. We examined associations of H. pylori infection and serum pepsinogens (PGs), as non-invasive markers of gastritis, with pediatric abdominal pain. A case-control study was conducted among 99 children aged 5-17 years admitted to one hospital for abdominal pain (cases) without an apparent organic reason. Using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, sera were tested and compared with 179 controls for anti-H. pylori immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies and PGI and PGII levels.

Cancer epidemiology, biomarkers & prevention : a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research, cosponsored by the American Society of Preventive Oncology2022eng
BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer lacks specific symptoms, resulting in diagnosis at later stages and high mortality. Serum pepsinogen is a biomarker for atrophic gastritis, a gastric cancer precursor, and may be useful to detect persons at increased risk of gastric cancer.
METHODS: The Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial was conducted in the United States between 1993 and 2001. ELISA-based pepsinogen tests were conducted on prediagnostic serum samples of 105 PLCO participants who developed gastric cancer and 209 age, sex, and race-matched controls. Pepsinogen positi

PURPOSE: The measurement of serum pepsinogens is clinically useful to represent gastric acid secretion. Since both serum pepsinogens and gastric acid secretion are considerably altered by H. pylori eradication, the correlation between these two parameters could be different prior to and after eradication. In this study, we investigated the correlation between the two parameters prior to and after eradication.
METHODS: One hundred eighteen H. pylori-positive patients with peptic ulcers or chronic gastritis were enrolled in this retrospective analysis. In all participants both the measurement o

The diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection represents a fundamental step for a correct clinical approach to the patient with gastritis, peptic ulcer or gastric adenocarcinoma or lymphoma. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy has first to be made in order to obtain gastric juice and mucosal biopsies, where Hp can be found. Two different procedures are recommended to diagnose Hp infection (e.g. urease test and histology or culture). The identification of specific DNA sequences with the polymerase chain reaction represents a sensitive and specific method to diagnose Hp infection. Serum anti Hp an

Moderate alcohol consumption has been suggested to facilitate elimination of Helicobacter pylori infection which is a key risk factor for chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) and gastric cancer. The aim of our study was to assess the association of alcohol consumption with CAG among older adults from Germany. In the baseline examination of ESTHER, a population-based study conducted in Saarland, serological measurements of pepsinogen I and II (for CAG definition) and H. pylori antibodies were taken in 9,444 subjects aged 50-74 years. Moderate current (<60 g/week) and lifetime (<or=51,376 g, lowest

A low pepsinogen (PG) I/II ratio can be used to detect atrophic gastritis (AG). Recent research has found that the PG I/II ratio is associated with several nutritional and metabolic disorders. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between the PG I/II ratio and biochemical markers in a Chinese population. In total, 1896 participants in a gastric cancer screening program underwent a health screening test that included assessment of serum pepsinogens. Subjects with PG I/II < 3.0 were considered as having atrophic gastritis. Associations between the PG I/II ratio and biochemical

BACKGROUND: Obesity and overweight have been positively related to gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It has been suggested that this relationship is as a consequence of an increased gastric acid reflux, which is caused by an enhanced intra-abdominal pressure.
AIM: To assess potential interaction of the association between body mass index (BMI) and GERD by chronic atrophic gastritis, which goes along with decreased acid production.
METHODS: In the baseline examination of ESTHER, a study conducted in 9953 older adults in Saarland, information on frequency of heartburn, potential risk f

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Helicobacter pylori infection has been implicated in atrophic gastritis and gastric ulcer disease. However, the relationship between gastric emptying and Helicobacter pylori infection is still unclear.
METHODOLOGY: One hundred and two consecutive patients with functional dyspepsia were enrolled in this study (53 Helicobacter pylori positive and 49 negative). Gastric emptying was determined using both the 13C-octanoic acid breath test and the paracetamol absorption test. For grading gastric atrophy, the biopsy samples and serum pepsinogen I/II ratio were used. The relationship
