Automatic detection of articulation disorders in children with cleft lip and palate.

Speech of children with cleft lip and palate (CLP) is sometimes still disordered even after adequate surgical and nonsurgical therapies. Such speech shows complex articulation disorders, which are usually assessed perceptually, consuming time and manpower. Hence, there is a need for an easy to apply and reliable automatic method. To create a reference for an automatic system, speech data of 58 children with CLP were assessed perceptually by experienced speech therapists for characteristic phonetic disorders at the phoneme level. The first part of the article aims to detect such characteristics

Phantom Sensations, Supernumerary Phantom Limbs and Apotemnophilia: Three Body Representation Disorders.

Body representation disorders continue to be mysterious and involve the anatomical substrate that underlies the mental representation of the body. These disorders sit on the boundaries of neurological and psychiatric diseases. We present the main characteristics of 3 examples of body representation disorders: phantom sensations, supernumerary phantom limb, and apotemnophilia. The dysfunction of anatomical circuits that regulate body representation can sometimes have paradoxical features. In the case of phantom sensations, the patient feels the painful subjective sensation of the existence of t

Non-motor cognitive-perceptual dysfunction associated with drug-induced parkinsonism.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between drug-induced parkinsonism (DIP) and subjective non-motor cognitive impairments in schizophrenia by performing comprehensive assessments of extrapyramidal side effects (EPS) and the subjective cognitive-perceptual functioning. METHODS: Ninety-one outpatients with schizophrenia were evaluated for DIP and other EPS. Subjective cognitive-perceptual dysfunction was comprehensively assessed using the Frankfurt Complaint Questionnaire (FCQ). To examine the association between DIP and non-motor cognitive-perceptual dy

The Impact of Foreign Language Accent on Expert Listeners' Auditory-Perceptual Evaluations of Dysphonia.

INTRODUCTION: Auditory-perceptual evaluations of dysphonia, though essential for comprehensive voice evaluation, are subject to listener bias. Knowledge of an underlying voice disorder can influence auditory-perceptual ratings. Accented speech results in increased listener effort and delays in word identification. Yet, little is known about the impact of foreign language accents on auditory-perceptual ratings for dysphonic speakers. The purpose of this work was to determine the impact of a foreign language accent on experts' auditory-perceptual ratings of dysphonic speakers. METHODS: Twelve v

Altered perceptual binding in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is a common multifaceted neuropsychiatric disorder. Research in GTS has traditionally focussed on mechanisms underlying changes in motor processes in these patients. There is, however, growing interest in GTS related sensory phenomena. According to the Theory of Event-coding (TEC), sensory stimuli do not only serve representational functions but also action-related functions. In the current study, we use the TEC framework to examine whether the way perceptual features are processed is altered in GTS. The results show that basic perceptual processes differ b

Central auditory processing disorder in school-aged children: a critical review.

The rationale to evaluate for central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) in school-aged children is based on the assumption that an auditory-specific perceptual deficit underlies many learning problems including specific reading and language disabilities. A fundamental issue in this area is whether convincing empirical evidence exists to validate this proposition. Herein, we consider the issue of modality specificity by examining the extent to which reading, language, and attention disorders in school-aged children involve perceptual dysfunctions limited to a single sensory modality. Difficul

Extensions to the Speech Disorders Classification System (SDCS).

This report describes three extensions to a classification system for paediatric speech sound disorders termed the Speech Disorders Classification System (SDCS). Part I describes a classification extension to the SDCS to differentiate motor speech disorders from speech delay and to differentiate among three sub-types of motor speech disorders. Part II describes the Madison Speech Assessment Protocol (MSAP), an ∼ 2-hour battery of 25 measures that includes 15 speech tests and tasks. Part III describes the Competence, Precision, and Stability Analytics (CPSA) framework, a current set of ∼ 90 per

Vestibular Thresholds: A Review of Advances and Challenges in Clinical Applications.

Vestibular disorders pose a substantial burden on the healthcare system due to a high prevalence and the severity of symptoms. Currently, a large portion of patients experiencing vestibular symptoms receive an ambiguous diagnosis or one that is based solely on history, unconfirmed by any objective measures. As patients primarily experience perceptual symptoms (e.g., dizziness), recent studies have investigated the use of vestibular perceptual thresholds, a quantitative measure of vestibular perception, in clinical populations. This review provides an overview of vestibular perceptual threshold

Slower and Less Variable Binocular Rivalry Rates in Patients With Bipolar Disorder, OCD, Major Depression, and Schizophrenia.

When two different images are presented to the two eyes dichoptically, observers usually experience a perceptual alternation between the two images. This phenomenon, known as binocular rivalry, has been used as a powerful tool to investigate mechanisms of visual awareness. It was also found that the rates of perceptual alternation are slower in patients with bipolar disorder than in healthy controls (Pettigrew and Miller, 1998; Miller et al., 2003). To investigate the broader clinical relevance of binocular rivalry in psychiatric disorders, we measured the perceptual alternation rates during r

Contributions of dysfunctional plasticity mechanisms to the development of atypical perceptual processing.

Experimental studies of sensory plasticity during development in birds and mammals have highlighted the importance of sensory experiences for the construction and refinement of functional neural circuits. We discuss how dysregulation of experience-dependent brain plasticity can lead to abnormal perceptual representations that may contribute to heterogeneous deficits symptomatic of several neurodevelopmental disorders. We focus on alterations of somatosensory processing and the dynamic reorganization of cortical synaptic networks that occurs during early perceptual development. We also discuss

Perceptual bias reveals slow-updating in autism and fast-forgetting in dyslexia.

Individuals with autism and individuals with dyslexia both show reduced use of previous sensory information (stimuli statistics) in perceptual tasks, even though these are very different neurodevelopmental disorders. To better understand how past sensory information influences the perceptual experience in these disorders, we first investigated the trial-by-trial performance of neurotypical participants in a serial discrimination task. Neurotypical participants overweighted recent stimuli, revealing fast updating of internal sensory models, which is adaptive in changing environments. They also

Evidence accumulation during perceptual decisions in humans varies as a function of dorsal frontoparietal organization.

Animal neurophysiological studies have identified neural signals within dorsal frontoparietal areas that trace a perceptual decision by accumulating sensory evidence over time and trigger action upon reaching a threshold. Although analogous accumulation-to-bound signals are identifiable on extracranial human electroencephalography, their cortical origins remain unknown. Here neural metrics of human evidence accumulation, predictive of the speed of perceptual reports, were isolated using electroencephalography and related to dorsal frontoparietal network (dFPN) connectivity using diffusion and

Visual agnosia.

As was originally proposed by Lissauer, visual recognition may break down either at an apperceptive or at an associative level. At an apperceptive level, finer grain distinctions may be made; the authors distinguished here between disorders of shape recognition and perceptual integration. It is not the case, however, that all patients with visual recognition deficits have impaired perception: poor recognition and naming may also result from damage to stored perceptual knowledge (e.g., structural descriptions), from problems in accessing semantic knowledge, from perceptual knowledge, or from im

Cerebral laterality and depression: differences in perceptual asymmetry among diagnostic subtypes.

Examined the influence of diagnostic subtype of depression on perceptual asymmetry for dichotic listening and visual tachistoscopic tasks. A total of 65 unmedicated patients with major depressive disorders and 30 normal controls were tested on a verbal and nonverbal task in each modality. Patients diagnosed according to the DSM-III with melancholia had abnormal perceptual asymmetry for dichotic nonsense syllable and complex tone tasks. In contrast, patients having a nonmelancholic "atypical depression" (reactivity of mood with preserved pleasure capacity and associated features) did not differ

Reconfiguration of Dynamic Functional Connectivity in Sensory and Perceptual System in Schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is thought as a self-disorder with dysfunctional brain connectivity. This self-disorder is often attributed to high-order cognitive impairment. Yet due to the frequent report of sensorial and perceptual deficits, it has been hypothesized that self-disorder in schizophrenia is dysfunctional communication between sensory and cognitive processes. To further verify this assumption, the present study comprehensively examined dynamic reconfigurations of resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in schizophrenia at voxel level, region level, and network levels (102 patients vs. 124 c

A pilot study of assessing visual hallucinations using virtual reality in lewy body disorders.

Visual hallucinations (VH), defined a visual perception without a corresponding object in the visual environment, are characteristic of Lewy body disorders and associated with adverse outcomes. Clinical management remains limited by reliance on retrospective self-report and challenges distinguishing between various visual experiences. We piloted a structured virtual reality (VR) environmental exposure protocol to systematically characterize abnormal visual perceptual events. Participants were exposed to four environments under varying visual conditions and narrated their experience. Narratives

Flashbacks and HPPD: A Clinical-oriented Concise Review.

A unique characteristic of LSD, LSD-like and substances with hallucinogenic properties is the recurrence of some or all the hallucinogenic symptoms which had appeared during the intoxication after the immediate effects of the substance had worn off. This recurring syndrome, mainly visual, is not clearly understood. The terms Flashback and Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder (HPPD) have been used interchangeably in the professional literature. We have observed at least two different recurrent syndromes, the first Flashback Type we refer to as HPPD I, a generally short-term, non-distress
