Amplitude-modulation forward masking for listeners with and without hearing loss.

Amplitude-modulation (AM) forward masking was measured for listeners with normal hearing and sensorineural hearing loss at 4000 and 1000 Hz, using continuous and noncontinuous masker and signal carriers, respectively. A low-fluctuation noise (LFN) carrier was used for the "continuous carrier" conditions. An unmodulated low-fluctuation noise (U-LFN), an unmodulated Gaussian noise (U-GN), and an amplitude-modulation low-fluctuation noise (AM-LFN) were maskers for the "noncontinuous carrier" conditions. As predicted, U-GN yielded more masking than U-LFN and similar masking to AM-LFN, suggesting t

The electrophysiological masking level difference: effects of age and mediation of hearing and cognition.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the conceptual framework that age effects on the electrophysiological binaural masking level difference (MLD) are partially mediated by age-related hearing loss and/or global cognitive function via mediation analysis. DESIGN: Participants underwent a series of audiometric tests. The MLD was measured via cortical auditory evoked potentials using a speech stimulus (/ɑ/) in speech-weighted background noise. We used mediation analyses to determine the total effect, natural direct effects, and natural indirect effects, which are displayed as regression coefficients ([95% CI]; p

The role of the medial olivocochlear reflex in psychophysical masking and intensity resolution in humans: a review.

This review addresses the putative role of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) reflex in psychophysical masking and intensity resolution in humans. A framework for interpreting psychophysical results in terms of the expected influence of the MOC reflex is introduced. This framework is used to review the effects of a precursor or contralateral acoustic stimulation on 1) simultaneous masking of brief tones, 2) behavioral estimates of cochlear gain and frequency resolution in forward masking, 3) the buildup and decay of forward masking, and 4) measures of intensity resolution. Support, or lack thereof

Peripheral and central contribution to the difficulty of speech in noise perception in dyslexic children.

Noise typically induces both peripheral and central masking of an auditory target. Whereas the idea that a deficit of speech in noise perception is inherent to dyslexia is still debated, most studies have actually focused on the peripheral contribution to the dyslexics' difficulties of perceiving speech in noise. Here, we investigated the respective contribution of both peripheral and central noise in three groups of children: dyslexic, chronological age matched controls (CA), and reading-level matched controls (RL). In all noise conditions, dyslexics displayed significantly lower performance

Development and current status of the "Cambridge" loudness models.

This article reviews the evolution of a series of models of loudness developed in Cambridge, UK. The first model, applicable to stationary sounds, was based on modifications of the model developed by Zwicker, including the introduction of a filter to allow for the effects of transfer of sound through the outer and middle ear prior to the calculation of an excitation pattern, and changes in the way that the excitation pattern was calculated. Later, modifications were introduced to the assumed middle-ear transfer function and to the way that specific loudness was calculated from excitation level

Masking of sounds by a background noise--cochlear mechanical correlates.

In the search for cochlear correlates of auditory masking by noise stimuli, we recorded basilar membrane (BM) vibrations evoked by either tone or click signals in the presence of varying levels of background noise. The BM vibrations were recorded from basal regions in healthy cochleae of anaesthetized chinchilla and gerbil. Non-linear interactions that could underpin various aspects of psychophysical masking data, including both compression and suppression at the BM level, were observed. The suppression effects, whereby the amplitude of the responses to each stimulus component could be reduced

Holistic crowding: selective interference between configural representations of faces in crowded scenes.

It is difficult to recognize an object that falls in the peripheral visual field; it is even more difficult when there are other objects surrounding it. This effect, known as crowding, could be due to interactions between the low-level parts or features of the surrounding objects. Here, we investigated whether crowding can also occur selectively between higher level object representations. Many studies have demonstrated that upright faces, unlike most other objects, are coded holistically. Therefore, in addition to featural crowding within a face (M. Martelli, N. J. Majaj, & D. G. Pelli, 2005)

Morphological processing in adult dyslexia.

This study employed the masked-priming paradigm [Forster and Davis (J Exp Psychol bearn Mem Cogn 10: 680-698, 1984).], along with traditional methods of evaluation of morphological awareness and phonological processing, to obtain a finer-grained picture of the relationship between morphological abilities and reading in adult dyslexic readers. Participants were 21 dyslexic and 21 normally reading native Hebrew-speaking male college students. The results with masked priming demonstrated almost normal status of morphological knowledge in adult dyslexic readers with the presence of characteristic

A measure for predicting audibility discrimination thresholds for spectral envelope distortions in vowel sounds.

Both in speech synthesis and in sound coding it is often beneficial to have a measure that predicts whether, and to what extent, two sounds are different. This paper addresses the problem of estimating the perceptual effects of small modifications to the spectral envelope of a harmonic sound. A recently proposed auditory model is investigated that transforms the physical spectrum into a pattern of specific loudness as a function of critical band rate. A distance measure based on the concept of partial loudness is presented, which treats detectability in terms of a partial loudness threshold. T

Selection of motor responses on the basis of unperceived stimuli.

In a previous study, the sensory phenomenon of "backward masking" was used to demonstrate that subjects can preprogram a single stereotyped voluntary movement or movement-sequence and that such a movement can be triggered in response to a stimulus that is not perceived (that is, a stimulus of which the subject is unaware). In the present study, visual stimuli were presented at random in one of two different locations to normal human subjects in a choice reaction-time (RT) task. When the stimulus appeared in one of the locations, subjects made a motor response. When the stimulus appeared in the

Effects of a red background on magnocellular functioning in average and specifically disabled readers.

Two experiments were conducted using metacontrast masking to examine responses in the magno system of adults, average reading adolescents and adolescents with specific reading disability. In Experiment 1 the effects of a red background field on the metacontrast functions of adult subjects were investigated. Results showed that a red, compared to a photometrically matched white background field, significantly attenuated metacontrast magnitude, supporting the interpretation of metacontrast as due to magno system suppression of parvo system responses. The finding of a red background effect was re

The intensitive DL of tones: dependence of signal/masker ratio on tone level and on spectrum of added noise.

In Greenwood [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 33, 484-502 (1961a)] the ratio of masked signal threshold to masker level (S/M) decreased about 4 dB at a masker level of about 50 dB SL, the 'transition' level, when noise bands were subcritical but not when supercritical. Schlauch et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 71, S73 (1982)] report a related result. A pilot study [Greenwood, Harvard Psychoacoustic Lab. Status Report 37, 8-9 (1961)] in which pure tones masked identical tones in-phase showed a larger change in S/M. Detailed tone-tone growth-of-masking curves from over a dozen subjects in 1967-69, and in 1960, a

Flicker masking and developmental dyslexia.

Recent studies have provided evidence that dyslexic children tend to show longer visual persistence than control children when presented with low-spatial-frequency grating stimuli. The possibility that this phenomenon might reflect an impairment of inhibitory Y-cell activity in the visual system of dyslexics has been investigated. A flicker masking technique was used to mask Y-cell activity selectively in a group of dyslexic boys and a group of age-matched controls. There were no overall differences in reaction times to the offsets of grating patterns of various spatial frequencies between the

Auditory frequency selectivity in normal and presbycusic subjects.

Auditory frequency selectivity was inferred from measurements of the detectability of tonal signals as a function of the cutoff frequency of a low-pass computer-generated noise masker. In Experiment I the effect of small changes in signal-to-noise ratio on inferred auditory frequency selectivity was studied. In Experiment II, frequency selectivity was determined for five normal-hearing subjects and four subjects with sensorineural hearing loss due to presbycusis. Critical ratios (signal-to-noise ratio at masked threshold) also were determined in Experiment II. The results of Experiment I indic

Single-neuron correlates of visual consciousness in human lateral occipital complex.

Conscious perception, a critical aspect of human cognition, is assumed to emerge from a complex network of interacting brain regions that transmit information via feedforward and recurrent pathways. This study presents single- and multiunit recordings from the human lateral occipital complex (LO), a key region for shape and object recognition, during three distinct perceptual paradigms: backward masking, flash suppression and binocular rivalry. Stimulus awareness increased decoding accuracy and decoders assigned higher probabilities to the consciously perceived stimulus during periods of dicho

Early correlates of visual awareness are affected by self-related information.

Self-related cues, most notably one's own face, are highly salient and confer processing advantages at both conscious and unconscious levels. Whether such self-related information and stimulus salience modulate the earliest electroencephalography (EEG) correlate of visual awareness, the visual awareness negativity (VAN), remains unknown. In this study, we examined whether self-related information influences the amplitude, latency, and topography of the VAN. Thirty-six participants performed a backward masking task while an EEG was recorded as viewing either their own or a familiar face under m

Perceptual sensitivity to, and electrophysiological encoding of, a complex periodic signal: effects of age.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate perceptual and electrophysiological encoding of complex periodic signals as a function of age. Design: Two groups of adults completed three listening tasks: a behavioural task of detection of a mistuned harmonic component in a complex tone, an electrophysiological measure of speech-evoked auditory brainstem response (sABR), and a speech-in-noise measure. Between group comparisons were undertaken for each task as well as pairwise correlation analyses for all tasks. Study sample: One group of younger adults (n = 20) and one group of older a

Cortical Thickness of Functionally Defined Visual Areas in Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder.

Patients with schizophrenia show specific abnormalities in visual perception, and patients with bipolar disorder may have related perceptual deficits. During tasks that highlight perceptual dysfunction, patients with schizophrenia show abnormal activity in visual brain areas, including the lateral occipital complex (LOC) and early retinotopic cortex. It is unclear whether the anatomical structure of those visual areas is atypical in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. In members of those two patient groups and healthy controls, we localized LOC and early retinotopic cortex individually for eac

Echolocating bats show species-specific variation in susceptibility to acoustic forward masking.

Echolocating bats rely on precise auditory temporal processing to detect echoes generated by calls that may be emitted at rates reaching 150-200 Hz. High call rates can introduce forward masking perceptual effects that interfere with echo detection; however, bats may have evolved specializations to prevent repetition suppression of auditory responses and facilitate detection of sounds separated by brief intervals. Recovery of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) was assessed in two species that differ in the temporal characteristics of their echolocation behaviors: Eptesicus fuscus, which use

The mechanism of short-term monocular deprivation is not simple: separate effects on parallel and cross-oriented dichoptic masking.

Short-term deprivation of the input to one eye increases the strength of its influence on visual perception. This effect was first demonstrated using a binocular rivalry task. Incompatible stimuli are shown to the two eyes, and their competition for perceptual dominance is then measured. Further studies used a combination task, which measures the contribution of each eye to a fused percept. Both tasks show an effect of deprivation, but there have been inconsistencies between them. This suggests that the deprivation causes multiple effects. We used dichoptic masking to explore this possibility.
