Role of side-slip flight in target pursuit: blue-tailed damselflies (Ischnura elegans) avoid body rotation while approaching a moving perch.

Visually guided flight control requires processing changes in the visual panorama (optic-flow) resulting from self-movement relative to stationary objects, as well as from moving objects passing through the field of view. We studied the ability of the blue-tailed damselfly, Ischnura elegans, to successfully land on a perch moving unpredictably. We tracked the insects landing on a vertical pole moved linearly 6 cm back and forth with sinusoidal changes in velocity. When the moving perch changed direction at frequencies higher than 1 Hz, the damselflies engaged in manoeuvres that typically invol

Can mercury in fish be reduced by water level management? Evaluating the effects of water level fluctuation on mercury accumulation in yellow perch (Perca flavescens).

Mercury (Hg) contamination of fisheries is a major concern for resource managers of many temperate lakes. Anthropogenic Hg contamination is largely derived from atmospheric deposition within a lake's watershed, but its incorporation into the food web is facilitated by bacterial activity in sediments. Temporal variation in Hg content of fish (young-of-year yellow perch) in the regulated lakes of the Rainy-Namakan complex (on the border of the United States and Canada) has been linked to water level (WL) fluctuations, presumably through variation in sediment inundation. As a result, Hg contamina

Bioaccumulation of Total Mercury (THg) in Freshwater Fish-Perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) and rudd (Scardinius erythrophtalmus L.)-Human Health Risk Assessment.

Fish have the capacity to bioaccumulate metals such as mercury through the food web, posing potential health risks to aquatic ecosystems and humans. This study aimed to assess total mercury (THg) concentrations in different tissues of freshwater fish and evaluate the potential risk for consumers. Perch (Perca fluviatilis) and rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus), representing different trophic levels, were collected from Koronowo Reservoir and Lake Wierzchucińskie Duże in summer and autumn. THg accumulation followed the order: muscle > liver > gills, with significant differences observed between

Potentially zoonotic parasite arrives to continental France: Clinostomum complanatum (Trematoda: Digenea) infection in perch (Perca fluviatilis) from the Doubs River (Jura).

Clinostomum complanatum (Rudolphi, 1814) is known as a food-borne zoonotic parasite using freshwater fish as intermediate host, although in its native distribution area in Europe, the Danube and Po basins and the northeast of Italy, no cases have been reported. This study reports a new geographic location outside the native distribution range of this parasite. We detected high infection levels of C. complanatum in wild perch (Perca fluviatilis Linnaeus) from the Doubs River in continental France. Clinostomum complanatum reached a prevalence of 97% and mean intensity of 5.8 cysts per fish in 33

Molecular and functional characterization of zinc finger aspartate-histidine-histidine-cysteine (DHHC)-type containing 1, ZDHHC1 in Chinese perch Siniperca chuatsi.

In the present study, the zinc finger aspartate-histidine-histidine-cysteine (DHHC)-type containing 1 (ZDHHC1) gene was identified in a commercial fish, the Chinese perch Siniperca chuatsi. The ZDHHC1 has five putative transmembrane motifs and conserved DHHC domain, showing high amino-acid identity with other teleost fish, and vertebrate ZDHHC1 loci are conserved from fish to human. In vivo expression analysis indicated that ZDHHC1 gene was constitutively transcribed in all the examined organs/tissues, and was induced following infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV) infection. Molecular cloning, characterization and expression analysis of Toll-like receptor 5M gene in Japanese sea perch (Lateolabrax japonicas) after bacterial infection.

Toll-like receptor 5M belongs to Toll-like receptors (TLRs) family, which plays a crucial role in innate immunity due to its important role in the recognition of bacteria invasion and in the activation of immune related pathways downstream. In the present study, we firstly cloned the full-length cDNAs of TLR 5M (LjTLR 5M) from Japanese sea perch (Lateolabrax japonicas). The full-length cDNAs of LjTLR 5M include an open reading frame (ORF) of 2676 bp encoding a polypeptide of 891 amino acid residues. The deduced amino acid sequence analysis showed that LiTLR 5M contains LRRs (extracellular leuc

Influence of an extreme climatic event on bilateral asymmetry and occurrence of eye flukes in perch (Perca fluviatilis) and roach (Rutilus rutilus) from a lake in southeast England.

Eye flukes are common infections of freshwater fish and their occurrence as metacercarial stages may occur non-randomly resulting in an asymmetrical distribution within the host eyes. However, from previous studies the presentation of bias by these trematodes lacks consistency suggesting that congenital asymmetrical effects are unlikely to be the cause and exogenous factors, such as environmental stress, may be more influential. The present study, undertaken over a 4-year period, investigates the impact of an extreme heatwave and drought on the annual bilateral asymmetry and occurrence of two

Newly Described Coccidia Goussia bayae from White Perch Morone americana: Morphology and Phylogenetics Support Emerging Taxonomy of Goussia within Piscine Hosts.

In March and April 2016, 150 white perch ( Morone americana) were collected from various localities in Chesapeake Bay and examined for coccidia. A previously undescribed species of coccidia was observed in the hepatic bile ducts and gallbladder of all white perch (100%) examined. We describe this species using morphological characteristics, histology, and gene sequences of the small-subunit ribosomal DNA ( rDNA), large-subunit rDNA, and mitochondrial genes cytochrome oxidase 1 ( COI), cytochrome oxidase b ( Cytb), and cytochrome oxidase 3 ( COIII). Oocysts of Goussia bayae n. sp. were subspher

Welfare of organic laying hens kept at different indoor stocking densities in a multi-tier aviary system. II: live weight, health measures and perching.

Multi-tier aviary systems, where conveyor belts below the tiers remove the manure at regular intervals, are becoming more common in organic egg production. The area on the tiers can be included in the net area available to the hens (also referred to as usable area) when calculating maximum indoor stocking densities in organic systems within the EU. In this article, results on live weight, health measures and perching are reported for organic laying hens housed in a multi-tier system with permanent access to a veranda and kept at stocking densities (D) of 6, 9 and 12 hens/m2 available floor are

Cloning of gonadotropin Gph-alpha, FSH-beta and LH-beta subunits and seasonal profiles of steroid hormones in wild-caught Nile perch, Lates niloticus.

The Nile perch (np; Lates niloticus) is a freshwater teleost species with a potential for aquaculture in freshwater surroundings. However, wild-caught breeders have persistently failed to spawn spontaneously in captivity. Cloning of the gonadotropin subunits and analysing seasonal variation in reproductive hormone levels for a 1-year period were done to gain knowledge on the physiological basis underlying the reproductive biology of np. The β-follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH-β) and β-luteinizing hormone (LH-β) subunits and their common α-glycoprotein (Gph-α) subunit were cloned using 3' and 5

Parasite community similarity in Athabasca River trout-perch (Percopsis omiscomaycus) varies with local-scale land use and sediment hydrocarbons, but not distance or linear gradients.

Parasite communities have been shown to be structured by processes at scales ranging from continental to microhabitat, but few studies have simultaneously considered spatial and environmental variables, measured at different scales, to assess their relative influences on parasite abundance, species richness, and community similarity. Parasite abundance, diversity, and community similarity in Athabasca River trout-perch (Percopsis omiscomaycus) were examined in relation to water quality, substrate profile, metal and organic compound levels in water and sediment, and landscape use patterns at di
