Freshwater snakehead fish, Channa punctata (Perciformes: Channidae) from Meerut (U.P.), India were screened for infection with metacercaria from the eye (vitreous humor) and brain (cranial cavity) and were analyzed by molecular methods using PCR and sequencing of the complete internal transcribed spacers (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) of the ribosomal RNA gene. Recovered metacercariae from sites, vitreous humor and cranial cavity were previously diagnosed as Diplostomulum cerebralis Chakrabarti, 1968 on the basis of morphological characteristics. A combination of molecular methods in this study depicts that

Calyptospora funduli has a broad host specificity, infecting at least 7 natural and 10 additional experimental definitive hosts, all atheriniform fishes within 5 families, but most in the genus Fundulus. Barriers, apparently innate ones, prevent any development of C. funduli in perciform fishes but allow incomplete or abnormal development of the parasite in a few unnatural atheriniform hosts. In the freshwater species Fundulus olivaceus and Fundulus notti, these abnormalities consisted of asynchronous development, degeneration of the parasite in early stages of development, and the formation o

A new nematode species, Philometra spicarae sp. n. (Philometridae), is described from a gravid female found in the abdominal cavity of spicarel, Spicara smaris (Linnaeus) (Centracanthidae, Perciformes), from the Ionian Sea off Sicily, Italy. The new species differs from most other Philometra spp. parasitic in the abdominal cavity of marine fishes by the oesophagus without an anterior inflation, resembling thus only Philometra cheilopogoni Mordvinova, 1986 and Philometra justinei Moravec, Ternengo and Levron, 2006; these two species can be differentiated from P. spicarae by the relative length

BACKGROUND: The phylogenetic relationships of dactylogyrids (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae) parasitising catfishes (Siluriformes) from the Neotropical region were investigated for the first time.
METHODS: Partial sequences of the 28S rRNA gene of 40 specimens representing 25 dactylogyrid species were analysed together with sequences from GenBank using Bayesian inference, Maximum likelihood and Parsimony methods. Monophyly of dactylogyrids infecting catfishes and the Ancyrocephalinae was evaluated using the Approximately Unbiased test.
RESULTS: The Ancyrocephalinae is a paraphyletic group of spec

Cartilage in the head of sturgeon or salmon has been gaining attention as a rich source of functional chondroitin sulfate (CS) or proteoglycans. Although the cartilage was found in the heads of other bony fishes, the structure of CS and its core protein, especially aggrecan, was not fully investigated. In this study, comprehensive analysis of CS and aggrecan in the head cartilage of 10 bony fishes including sturgeon and salmon was performed. The 4-O-sulfation to 6-O-sulfation ratio (4S/6S ratio; S: sulfate residue) of CS in Perciformes was ≧1.0, while the 4S/6S ratios of CS from sturgeons and

A new trematode species, Derogenes lacustris Tsuchida, Flores, Viozzi, Rauque et Urabe n. sp. (Derogenidae: Derogeninae), from freshwater fishes is described using morphological and molecular approaches in Argentinean Patagonia. D. lacustris is the most common hemiuroidean species in the Limay River basin and parasitizes almost all the native and introduced Patagonian freshwater fish. This new species could be considered as the unique freshwater species in the genus Derogenes Nicoll, 1910. Another hemiuroidean species, Thometrema patagonica Szidat (Archiev Hydrobiol 51: 542-577, 1956) Lunaschi

Turbellarian black spot disease is described in a bluespine unicornfish Naso unicornis (Perciformes, Acanthuridae) collected from the wild off Nouméa, New Caledonia, South Pacific. Each cyst contained a whitish worm, 2 to 4 mm in length, which was able to swim freely in seawater. Cyst walls consisted of fibrous tissue with a scattering of melanocytes. Worms had 2 eyespots at the anterior end, a pharynx at the posterior end and a largely undeveloped reproductive system. They were identified as Piscinquilinus sp. (= Ichthyophaga sp.), a genostomatid turbellarian. The disease spread within 2 wk f

In 2015 and 2016, two Barramundi (Lates calcarifer) farms in Singapore reported a disease outbreak characterized by lethargic behavior, pronounced inappetence, generalized skin lesions, erosions of the fins and tail, and ultimately high mortality in their fish. Next-generation sequencing and PCR confirmed presence of a novel virus belonging to the Alloherpesviridae family, Lates calcarifer herpesvirus (LCHV), which was subsequently isolated and cultured. We characterize, for the first time, the complete genome of two cultured LCHV isolates. The genome contains a long unique region of approxima

The innate immune response is a critical defense mechanism by which vertebrates recognize and eliminate invading pathogens. Pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) detect pathogen-associated molecular patterns and activate downstream signaling pathways. NOD1, a classic PRR of the NLR family, recruits the adaptor protein RIPK2 to initiate antibacterial signaling. In this study, we cloned and characterized the NOD1 gene from snakehead (Channa argus). Briefly, the full-length NOD1 cDNA is 2829 bp encoding 943 amino acids, showing high homology with Perciformes. The qPCR analysis revealed widespread

The parrotfish, Scarus rivulatus, is a widely distributed herbivorous species, that helps maintain reef resilience by controlling algal growth. However, overfishing and reef degradation threaten its populations, and the lack of genomic resources limits studies on its adaptive potential and conservation strategies. In this study, we successfully assembled a high-quality chromosome-level genome for S. rivulatus using a combination of Illumina, Nanopore, and Hi-C technologies. The assembled genome is 1.58 Gb in size, with scaffold N50 lengths reaching 67.2 Mb. Hi-C contact maps anchored approxima

The Indo-Pacific king mackerel, scientifically known as Scomberomorus guttatus, is a valued marine species that holds significant commercial importance in the Indo-Pacific region. However, the lack of genomic resources has hindered a comprehensive understanding of this species. In this study, we constructed a genome of Indo-Pacific king mackerel at the chromosome level using a combination of PacBio HiFi reads and a chromosome contact map (Hi-C). The resulting genome had high contig and scaffold N50 values of 8.84 Mb and 32.9 Mb, respectively. In the genome assembly, which is 797.66 Mb in size

Infections with monogeneans of the Diplectanidae can limit productivity of and cause considerable health issues for fish in aquaculture. To date, 9 species of diplectanids have been reported from the Asian sea bass or barramundi Lates calcarifer (Perciformes: Latidae) in the Asia-Pacific region. This study characterised the diplectanid parasite fauna found infecting wild and farmed barramundi from 5 localities in tropical Australia, including north Queensland and Western Australia. A combination of morphometric and comparative genetic analyses of partial 28S ribosomal RNA (28S rRNA) from speci

The polarisation of ciliary bundles on the macula of the saccule in the European bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L) has been studied using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). These data show that D. labrax possesses ciliary bundles arranged in four dichotomous quadrants with a standard orientation, comparable to hearing generalists from the order Perciformes. The spacing between ciliary bundles was investigated in three size classes of fish, with the results indicating that the addition of receptor cells in the ear of D. labrax continues for at least the first 2 years of development. The lengths

When terrestrial organisms locomote in natural settings, they must navigate complex surfaces that vary in incline angles and substrate roughness. Variable surface structures are common in arboreal environments and can be challenging to traverse. This study examines the walking gait of katydids (Tettigoniidae) as they traverse a custom-built platform with varying incline angles ($30^\circ$, $45^\circ$, $60^\circ$, $75^\circ$, $90^\circ$) and substrate roughness (40, 120, and 320 grit sandpaper). Our results show that katydids walk more slowly as the incline angle increases and as katydid mass i
