Much more than just shyness: the impact of social anxiety disorder on educational performance across the lifespan.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) has been linked to academic underachievement, but previous studies had methodological limitations. We investigated the association between SAD and objective indicators of educational performance, controlling for a number of covariates and unmeasured confounders shared between siblings. METHODS: This population-based birth cohort study included 2 238 837 individuals born in Sweden between 1973 and 1997, followed-up until 2013. Within the cohort, 15 755 individuals had a recorded ICD-10 diagnosis of SAD in the Swedish National Patient Register. Logistic

Electrophysiological correlates of performance monitoring under social observation in patients with social anxiety disorder and healthy controls.

Previous research suggests that electrophysiological correlates of performance monitoring, in particular the error-related negativity (ERN), vary according to psychopathology and context factors. The present study examined the effect of social context on behavioral and electrophysiological correlates of performance monitoring in healthy adult subjects and in patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD). Participants performed two runs of a Go/NoGo flanker task in different social conditions: in the observation condition, they were observed by a confederate while performing the task, whereas the

The Role of Performance Quality in Adolescents' Self-Evaluation and Rumination after a Speech: Is it Contingent on Social Anxiety Level?

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) has relatively poor outcomes for youth with social anxiety, possibly because broad-based CBT is not tailored to their specific needs. Treatment of social anxiety in youth may need to pay more attention to negative social cognitions that are considered a key factor in social anxiety development and maintenance. AIMS: The aim of the present study was to learn more about the role of performance quality in adolescents' cognitions about their social performance and, in particular, the moderating role social anxiety plays in the relationship between p

Anxiety and salivary cortisol in symptomatic and nonsymptomatic panic patients and healthy volunteers performing simulated public speaking.

Anxiety and salivary cortisol were measured in subjects performing simulated public speaking (SPS), a procedure that has been neurobiologically related to panic disorder. The subjects were divided into three groups: 18 symptomatic panic patients, 16 nonsymptomatic, drug-treated panic patients, and 17 healthy controls. In the experimental session, subjective anxiety (Visual Analogue Mood Scale) and the total score of the Bodily Symptom Scale (BSS) were higher in symptomatic patients than in controls, with nonsymptomatic patients in between. Measures of cortisol taken at home showed that the lev

Performance of the SF-36 health survey in screening for depressive and anxiety disorders in an elderly female Swedish population.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the sensitivity, specificity and predictive validity of suggested cut-off scores in the SF-36 mental health (MH) and mental component summary (MCS) in screening for depressive and anxiety disorders in a population sample of older Swedish women. METHOD: The sample comprised 586 randomly selected females aged 70-84 years who took part in an in-depth psychiatric examination. This provided the 'gold standard' against which the usefulness of SF-36 recommended thresholds for screening for depressive and anxiety disorders in older Swedish women was examined. RESULTS: Based on D

Transforming uncertainty into exploration: effects of text-to-image AI on EFL learners' writing anxiety, motivation, and performance.

INTRODUCTION: English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writing is inherently fraught with linguistic uncertainty, which frequently triggers anxiety and stifles learner motivation. While generative AI (GenAI) is increasingly adopted, current research predominantly treats these tools as text-generation shortcuts for final writing products, leaving the cognitive and affective mechanisms of multimodal GenAI as a process-oriented scaffold largely underexplored. METHOD: To bridge this gap, this study investigated the effects of a text-to-image (T2I) AI-supported visual narrative intervention on 78 EFL u

Influence of Virtual Reality Devices on Pain and Anxiety in Patients Undergoing Cystoscopy Performed under Local Anaesthesia.

Bladder cancer is one of the most common malignancies. Its diagnosis is based on transurethral cystoscopy. Virtual reality (VR) is a three-dimensional world generated through the projection of images, the emission of sounds and other stimuli. VR has been proven to be a very effective "distractor" and, thus, a useful tool in managing pain. The aim of this study was to determine whether the use of VR sets is technically feasible during the cystoscopy and whether the use of VR devices would reduce the degree of ailments associated with the procedure; Methods: The study prospectively included both

The role of borderline personality disorder symptoms on absenteeism & work performance in the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA).

BACKGROUND: Symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD) were previously found to be associated with decreased work performance, even after controlling for depressive and anxiety disorders. Furthermore, co-occurrence of BPD and affective disorders is common. Therefore, we examined the effect of BPD symptoms on occupational functioning in workers with affective disorders. METHODS: Healthy workers (n = 287), workers with current depression/anxiety only (n = 195), workers with BPD symptoms only (n = 54), and workers with both depression/anxiety and BPD symptoms (n = 103) were selected from

Associations Between Cognitive Performance, Depression, Anxiety, and Stress in Patients With Chronic Vestibular Dysfunction: A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The vestibular system is critical for sensorimotor function, balance control, and gaze stability. Recent research highlights its role in cognitive functions, including attention, memory, and visuospatial skills. The integration of this system is lateralized in the brain. These disorders represent a substantial burden on healthcare systems, and a negative impact on quality of life. OBJECTIVES: Previous research has shown that increased cognitive load can alter vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs), suggesting that vestibular function is influenced by cognitive demands. Does mindfulness mediate the relationship between anxiety and second language performance? A meta-analytic structural equation modeling study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Anxiety is a well-established affective factor that impairs second language (L2) learning, whereas mindfulness may alleviate anxiety and enhance cognitive processing. However, whether mindfulness serves as a mechanism linking anxiety to L2 performance remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of mindfulness in the relationship between anxiety and L2 performance. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted for studies published up to April 2026. Data were extracted from observational studies (Pearson's correlations) and from baseline scores of inte

Epidemiology, genetics, neuroimaging, clinical features, and treatment between overall and performance-only social anxiety disorder: a narrative review.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common psychiatric condition marked by a significant fear of social evaluation. To better identify a meaningful subgroup, the DSM-5 introduced a "performance-only" specifier, replacing the generalised specifier in the DSM-IV. We conducted a narrative review comparing overall SAD (including generalised and performance-only forms) and performance-only SAD across epidemiology, genetics, neuroimaging, clinical characteristics, and treatment. Overall SAD affects 5-13% of the population, whereas performance-only SAD has been reported in about 0.3-0.7%. Overall SAD
