While pleural effusion and ascites secondary to acute pancreatitis are common, clinically relevant pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade are observed rarely. In a study by Pezzilli et al., pleural effusion was noted in 7 of the 21 patients with acute pancreatitis whereas the authors detected pericardial effusion development in only three. The authors asserted that pleural effusion was associated with severe acute pancreatitis, while pericardial effusion and the severity of acute pancreatitis were not significantly related.

Pericardial effusion in patients with giant cell arteritis has been described in case reports. The exact prevalence of this manifestation is unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and characteristics of pericardial effusion in patients with giant cell arteritis. Retrospective data were collected from 114 patients at a single hospital with giant cell arteritis diagnosed between October 1999 and July 2013. Pericardial effusion was found in four patients (3.5 %, 95 % confidence intervals 1-8.7). In three cases, pericardial effusion was present at initial presentation

Abstract Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a serious condition that can lead to right heart failure and death. Pericardial effusion in PAH is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, and its pathogenesis is complex and poorly understood. There are few data on the prevalence of pericardial effusion in PAH, and more importantly, the management of pericardial effusion is controversial. Current literature abounds with case reports, case series, and retrospective studies that have limited value for assessing this association. Hence, we summarize the available evidence on this omi

A 53-year-old male admitted with increased shortness of breath. In the physical examination, he had dyspnea, tachycardia and tachypnea. An echocardiogram showed large pericardial effusion (PE) as well as significant pulmonary hypertension. He had been started recently on minoxidil for blood pressure control. PE was reported to occur with minoxidil treatment both in patients undergoing dialysis and those with normal renal function. Pulmonary hypertension has been reported to affect the cardiac tamponade physiology. Because of significant pulmonary hypertension in our patient, a right heart cath

Cardiac tamponade due to malignant effusion, though rarely the initial manifestation of malignancy, is usually secondary to adenocarcinoma of the lung. Two cases are reported. One patient presented with cardiac tamponade; the other had diffuse cutaneous involvement of the left neck and shoulder two months before he presented with cardiac tamponade. Cytologic examination of both fluids revealed adenocarcinoma. Ultrastructural examination showed poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma in the first patient and bronchioloalveolar carcinoma in the second; carcinoembryonic antigen levels in the fluids

Report of one case of chronic pericardial effusion combined with pulmonary valve stenosis and atrial septal defect in a man aged 31, hospitalized for congestive heart failure. The relationship between these two diseases were studied, and the diagnostic and therapeutic problems posed were studied.

BACKGROUND: Pericardial decompression syndrome is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication of pericardiocentesis. It is characterized by myocardial dysfunction that leads to hemodynamic instability and acute heart failure.
CASE SUMMARY: A 24-year-old woman was admitted for a large malignant pericardial effusion. After drainage of this effusion, she had hemodynamic instability, with severe right ventricular dysfunction and impaired left ventricular filling. Spontaneous improvement was seen after 10 days of supportive care.
DISCUSSION: The exact pathophysiology behind this conditio

Nowadays, the early diagnosis of tumoral diseases is more possible and accurate with multiple diagnostic imaging modalities such as chest X-ray, echocardiography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging, especially for cardiac tumors which are usually asymptomatic, even in large sizes. In cardiac masses, the patients' presentations are non- specific and dependent on the tumor size and site as well as its compressive effect on the adjacent structures. On the other hand, the first and last signs could be sudden cardiac death. However, cardiac masses are either benign or malignant and

BACKGROUND: Antemortem discovery of a malignant pericardial effusion secondary to cervical cancer is uncommon and management should focus on symptom control.
CASE: A patient was diagnosed with widely metastatic cervical cancer following a simple hysterectomy for presumed benign etiology. Sixteen months later, she was diagnosed with pericardial tumor involvement and a malignant pericardial effusion resulting in severe dyspnea. The patient underwent a pericardial window procedure that temporarily alleviated her symptoms. She again developed symptoms 2 weeks following the procedure and ultimatel

A 7-week-old infant with a 1-week history of a SARS-CoV2 respiratory infection presented with tachypnea. Cardiomegaly was noted on chest roentgenogram. Echocardiogram showed a large pericardial effusion, with tamponade physiology and a large pericardial mass. Serosanguinous fluid was noted on pericardiocentesis. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well-circumscribed vascular mass suggestive of a pericardial hemangioma. Serial echocardiograms showed reaccumulation of the pericardial effusion. The mass was surgically removed. A feeding vessel from the right coronary artery was ligated.

Pericardial decompression syndrome (PDS) is a potentially fatal disorder of left ventricular function that sometimes occurs after drainage of a pericardial effusion for cardiac tamponade. Patients at risk for PDS are difficult to identify. Here, we report 2 cases where PDS developed after drainage of effusions that had been present for years, suggesting that patients with chronic effusions are at higher risk for PDS. (Level of Difficulty: Advanced.).

Purulent pericarditis is rarely encountered in the antibiotherapy era, mainly in immunosupressed patients, after cardiac operations, in septicemia. Diagnosis of purulent pericarditis is based upon the analysis of pericardial drainage, obtained through pericardiocentesis or preferably, through a surgical approach. The reported case has following peculiarities: clinical signs of false acute surgical abdomen; altered clinical and biological response to infection; Optimal treatment is early, efficient pericardial drainage, with low risk of tissue contamination and of pericardial constriction; Surg

OBJECTIVE: Malignant pericardial effusion may affect almost 15 of the patients with underlying malignancies which deteriorates the prognosis. The prognostic significance of pericardial fluid cytology is under-represented in previous studies.
METHODS: A total of 73 patients with symptomatic pericardial effusion treated with pericardiocentesis were included in this retrospective analysis. Macroscopic appearance, biochemical features, and cytological findings were obtained. Patients were divided into 3 groups: (i) without malignancy, (ii) with malignancy and negative cytology, and (iii) with mal

OBJECTIVES: To report short-term complications and long-term outcomes of thoracoscopic pericardial window for management of pericardial effusion in dogs.
METHODS: Retrospective study of dogs in which thoracoscopic pericardial window was performed using a three-cannula technique. Surgery time, complications, postoperative management, area of resected pericardium, histopathology results and outcome were evaluated.
RESULTS: Diagnoses included dogs with idiopathic pericardial effusion (n = 10), cardiac mass (n = 4) and mesothelioma (n = 1). One case required conversion to sternotomy. Median thor

Serial echocardiographic examinations of the heart were obtained for 13 patients undergoing irradiation for malignant lymphoma. Eleven of these had been shown to have mediastinal adenopathy; none had clinically detectable pericardial disease. The pericardial effusion which had been echocardiographically evident in 6 patients prior to treatment disappeared during or subsequent to the course of radiotherapy. Small asymptomatic effusions appeared in 5 patients during the follow-up period. Pericardial effusions, detected easily by echocardiography, occur more commonly than hed been previously thou
