Reporting quality of randomized controlled trial abstracts published in leading laser medicine journals: an assessment using the CONSORT for abstracts guidelines.

The objectives of this study were to assess the reporting quality of randomized controlled trial (RCT) abstracts published in leading laser medicine journals and investigate the association between potential predictors and reporting quality. The official online archives of four leading laser medicine journals were hand-searched to identify RCTs published in 2014 and 2015. A reporting quality assessment was carried out using the original 16-item CONsolidated Standards Of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) for Abstracts checklist. For each abstract, an overall CONSORT score (OCS) was calculated (score r

[Present state and future direction of topical antifungals].

Topical agents are generally better than oral medicine with respect to systemic side effects. Even if an antifungal drug causes severe systemic side effects, the drug, if it has excellent antifungal activity, can be used for topical treatment. In addition, because most causative fungi in dermatomycosis are usually located in the horny cell layers of the epidermis (superficial layers of the skin), topical antifungals are the first choice of treatment for most dermatomycoses. Many topical antifungals with excellent antifungal activity have recently been developed and once a day topical applicati

In vivo effects of monoclonal antibody against ICAM-1 and LFA-1 on antigen-induced nasal symptoms and eosinophilia in sensitized rats.

We applied anti-ICAM-1 and anti-LFA-1 monoclonal antibody (mAb) to ovalbumin-sensitized rats and examined the effects on nasal eosinophilia and nasal symptoms following topical antigen challenge. In a general and local immunization (GLI) group of rats, the mAbs were applied during the booster topical immunization period. In a general immunization group and a local immunization (LI) group of rats, the mAbs were applied during the immunization period. The number of sneezes and nasal scratching movements occurring soon after topical antigen (Ag) challenge was significantly suppressed in the GLI a

Use of Latency Models to Assess the Association between Use of Topical Corticosteroids (CS) and Incident Cataract among Eyes of Patients with Uveitis.

PURPOSE: Cataract is a leading cause of visual impairment related to uveitis. Time-to-development of cataract following topical corticosteroid use (CS) is not well characterized. We hypothesized that the time of greatest cataract risk following the use of topical CS could be identified using latency modelling. METHODS: Eyes with anterior uveitis were followed over time for cataract in a large retrospective cohort study. In addition to uveitis activity (AC) and topical CS use at each visit, other covariates predictive of cataract incidence were available. Cox regression analyses with time-depe

Overt diabetes mellitus caused by the topical administration of dexamethasone ointment on the oral mucosa.

We herein describe the case of a 68-year-old man who developed overt diabetes mellitus following the topical administration of dexamethasone 0.1%-containing ointment over a five-month period to treat oral lichen planus. The topical dexamethasone therapy was discontinued gradually, and the patient was subsequently treated with insulin for one month without clinical signs of overt adrenal insufficiency. An oral glucose tolerance test revealed impaired glucose tolerance after the treatment. The potential for the deterioration of glucose metabolism must be considered when patients with impaired gl

The Evolution of Aging Policy Scholarship in the Journal of Aging & Social Policy (1989-2025).

Since its launch in 1989, the Journal of Aging & Social Policy has served as a major outlet for applied research on policies affecting older adults. Yet the thematic trajectory of its archive over nearly four decades has not been mapped systematically. We apply structural topic modeling to 1,023 research articles published from 1989 through October 2025 and assess changes in topic prevalence across five analytic periods. The 31-topic solution was grouped into seven meta-categories, and regression tests were used to evaluate period differences. Politics, Governance & Law declined by 11.9% point

Examining the impact of design-comparable effect size on the analysis of single-case design in special education.

Initially excluded from many evaluations of education research, single-case designs have recently received wider acceptance within and beyond special education. The growing approval of single-case design has coincided with an increasing departure from convention, such as the visual analysis of results, and the emphasis on effect sizes comparable with those associated with group designs. The use of design-comparable effect sizes by the What Works Clearinghouse has potential implications for the experimental literature in special education, which is largely composed of single-case designs that m

Stress testing journals: a quasi-experimental study of rejection rates of a previously published paper.

BACKGROUND: When a journal receives a duplicate publication, the ability to identify the submitted work as previously published, and reject it, is an assay to publication ethics best practices. The aim of this study was to evaluate how three different types of journals, namely open access (OA) journals, subscription-based journals, and presumed predatory journals, responded to receiving a previously published manuscript for review. METHODS: We performed a quasi-experimental study in which we submitted a previously published article to a random sample of 602 biomedical journals, roughly 200 jo
